Fairly short but interesting article about ski resorts having to go further up the hill but having a serious impact on the number and diversity of Alpine bird species on bbc

As winter snowfall at lower levels becomes less reliable, ecologists fear the demand for higher ski slopes will put pressure on the birds' habitat.

That's really scary. I hope that the poor season last year in Australia isn't a sign of things to come, our mountain resorts are built at the summits already, there's nowhere for them to go!

the Japanese will figure out some way to jack up the mountain a few hundred meters...if they can build an airport in the ocean - they can engineer anything!
They've got a long way to go before they hit the summits in Japan though!

Just read that Australian snow records from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology reveal that the Snowy Mountains spring snow depth has declined by 40% over the last 40 years. A CSIRO report in 2003 found that ski resorts could lose a quarter of their snow in 15 years, and half by 2050. But that was 4 years ago. It seems that snow cover in some areas in 2006 reached the lower end levels that the CSIRO report estimated as likely for 2020.
