powking 0
I recently bought my first snowboard for the upcoming snow season but im unsure of myself when it comes to tuning it. Can anybody give me some tips on what i should do first? I havent done anything to the edges or base yet. I am really wondering what degree i should tune my edges too and how to detune my nose and tail. Thanks, PK
Kumapix 0
don't bother detuning your nose & tail. I've never done it. your edges are fine as is. It's a new snowboard right? all you need to do is a double wax (ie wax it 2x)....if you feel like it. if you take it out as is the board won't fall apart on you. if you do wax it let it sit overnight before you scrape the first time so that the base absorbs the wax. but try googling it, I know I've seen a million how-to wax etc guides. also do a search on this forum, i'm pretty sure it's been covered before
powking 0
alright thanks man. I guess ill leave the edges and just double wax before my first trip out.
Kumapix 0
detuning your nose and tail is for people who want to get all tech on their boards. it doesn't do anything that you'll notice. if you do lots of rails you can detune (ie make dull) your edges so that they don't catch. but then good luck carving on hardpack! AK 77 0
noooooooo! detuning your edges means blunting the transition zones where the side edge changes into the nose and tail - about 2 or 3 cm in either direction from the 2 points that touch the floor if you stand your board on its edge. This has nothing to do with rails - its to avoid twitchy edge catches when carving on hardpack - "good luck carving on hardpack" if you don't do it! Detuning ALL of your edge like this is only for hardcore rail riders, but the contact points need to be detuned or you will catch your edge and wonder why. Depending on the brand this may have been done already, but probably not.
snosurf 0
If it's a new board I wouldn't bother waxing it... It will have already been factory waxed....re-waxing it won't really make any noticeable difference, in fact it my make it slower if you don't have the right equipment (ie an electric drill with buffer) to immaculately scrape off all traces of wax. Kumapix 0
i meant the edges AK not the nose or tail when i said detune your edges for rails and good luck carving on hardpack
powking 0
maybe its a good idea to take my board into a shop and have them totally tune and wax it at least once before the season then i can try it on my own later on. Ive never done it before and i realyl dont want to screw a up my new board haha
snosurf 0
Nah that's a waste of money...take it for a ride, if you notice a problem then take it into the shop... Unless you're loaded - in that case, take it into the shop then send me some money
quattro 1
Why it should come from the factory tuned. Extra hot waxing will help just remember to scrape it after it cools. using a brush will also help remove wax the scraper wont get.
Kumapix 0
what maker is your board? They normally come with a factory wax but that is so so. look up how to wax on this forum and on the net and give it a go yourself - you can't really screw it up. don't bother with a shop - you'll be spending money and you still won't know how to do it yourself. All you need is: 1)wax (obviously go to a shop for this and ask) 2)old iron (or new one - I got one for 1000 yen at kojima. try to get one with no holes on the bottom) PS. don't use this on clothes afterwards! 3) brillo pad that u can get at a home center for 200 yen 4) a scraper
powking 0
my board is a forum. its a forum team 151 http://www.the-house.com/9851fotzzforum.html
Kumapix 0
nice board. ok, so it will have a factory wax. but still, if you have the time give it 2 waxes before you go riding.
powking 0
maybe ill buy one of those kits with an iron , scraper, wax , and edge tuning things all in one. seems pretty handy .. sorda expensive haha but probably worth it
Kumapix 0
well, you'll be paying close to a man for that. you can get outfitted for 4200 yen if you go ghetto. The manager at my local shop told me not to bother buying one since u can get all the stuff cheap anyways. but if you do get it you'll have all the tools and won't have to worry about if you're getting the right stuff
Kumapix 0
hey they had a forum devun walsh board on steepandcheap 10 mins ago for 120$. what a steal!

Kumapix 0
no base cleaner. only use it when your board gets dirty (prob in the spring). just wax, leave it overnight. scrape. wax then scrape it the night before you go riding or the morning of
