thefunkydrummer 0
I've heard all manner of figures thrown around - from 500-700 ski areas in total. Anyone know what the offical count is?
muikabochi 208
No-one knows Tons of them are tiny town-owned one lift type things. There's one near my house and I wouldn't dream of spending any cash to go there. It is seriously just one lift and a gentle slope that is about 300 meters long. They call it a resort! thefunkydrummer 0
Yeah - there's a few of them around me too... but surely SJ must have a fairly good idea as it lists the vast majority?
number9 0
Don't know if "ski-jo" should be translated directly as "ski resort". What are small one (or just a few) lift operations called elsewhere in the world?
SnowJapan Moderator SnowJapan.Com#4 5 Posted January 20, 2006 SnowJapan Moderator Share Posted January 20, 2006 We are - still! been doing this for 2 months or so now - going through our database of resorts and updating it all and getting rid of things that are out of date. (We decided to do a proper job of it rather than rush and cut corners - currently about 300 of the main resorts data is totally up-to-date for this season) Anyway back to the point! We have at one time had over 600 resorts in our database, but that number is on it's way down as places close and quietly shut down (and get deleted). The number is probably between 500-600, but of course many of those being the really tiny places you are talking about above. We have asked the same question of ski associations etc here and never got a definitive answer. Hope that helps a bit. Hopefully if you ask us again in a month or so, we will have a more accurate number to tell you.
thefunkydrummer 0
Interestig stuff - thanks. I agree that many of japan's ski "jos" aren't resorts - but that's why I said Ski Areas. I think even a tiny rope tow, with a 200m slope can still be classed as a "ski area".
