Fattwins 0
This weekend I have been haunted a bit, here is why. While my co-guides and I were packing for a waterfall climbing tour, we had a bit of a shoe problem. So I went up into the guide gear room and pulled extra shoes. After I brought them down, another guide said that they were “iizumi kuns”. We put them to the side and waited for iizumi kun to comeback. When iizumi kun came back we asked him about the shoes and he said…. “Those are ……sans shoes, he died in the big avalanche at hakuba this year”. It just sort of hit home. I knew that some of my co-guides were friends with him but I didn’t realize that they were that close. I know the guys that got caught in the avalanche thus made a mistake. While other friends at my company turned back, they continued on. A friend at the company will always be haunted by the fact that he turned back and they didn’t. We/I left those shoes behind for what reason I don’t know. Maybe we did it out of respect or maybe out of fear whichever, It made think more about decision making in the mountains
mattlucas 0
It should also make you think about decision making in pretty much everything When you get that gut instinct maybe you should follow it. Interesting story
soubriquet 0
I don't know about this avalanche. What were the circumstances that led some of the party to turn back?
