I understand that i should try heaps on and determine the best fit (as best I can with my poor Japanese). I have been given advice to wear the ones I like the best around the shop for quite a while. I imagine that all this should take a few hours (it certainly did the last time I bought ski boots). Now here is my problem... It is sensible to shop around for the best price and/or to try even more brands, so after a few hours of struggle I really dont want to walk out and repeat the whole procedure again in another shop.

Should I just choose a shop that specialises in boots and stocks alot of brands and be happy that the price isnt going to be that different from other shops around the corner.

This boot buying thing is REALLY daunting me.

I spent a total of 7 hours in 3 different trips over 3 weekends just trying to get good value and quality jacket and pants! Boots are vastly more important than clothes. How much would it cost to have a private fitter bring a whole truck load to my house and in the serentity of my own surrounds I can make wise choice (not a serious question).

i reckon with boots you need to worry most bout being comfortable dont worry about the price you need to be comfortable its sooo important...!

maybe go to a shop try a few on rite down the style make and size that you want... then go home surf the net or get the phone book out and see where has the cheapest pair?

That way you dont have to go to the shops you know what you would like and your going to get the best price you can get on them by calling or surfing... it might end up being cheaper to import them or somthing?

just a thought but remember you cant pay enough for comfort!

Thanks SF-girl. There are some limitations as teh the value and type of product that you can order off teh i-net and have delivered to Japan (computer s/w for one). I may investigate.

Any brands of boots that are renowned for being pretty average in terms of quality? In short, are there any that I should just steer well clear of?

i have only ever worn flow boots....

are you buying them just to wear in da snow or is it for boarding too?

flow boots are really good i havent had any troubles but i have nothing to compare to. my friend bought "vans" boots and had trouble they had funny stitching which rubbed and werent very well made so best not vans!...

i'd advise you'd want some with inners cause they tend to be a bit warmer and your foot can mold to them very easily by just taking the inner out an walking around in them... or holding a hair dyer at them and then wearing them...

i will be buying boots in the coming weeks my selection is limited to flow and flux because thats what my brothers store stocks.... flow boots are good with flow bindings...

i hear you can only wear burton boots with burton bindings and then the burton bindings dont fit other boards besides the burton ones... so if it were to be a long term boot/board investment i'd be stearing clear or "linked" brands (ie. ones that can only go with their own brand)

Flow bindings fit any boards so thats a bonus...

maybe have a look at the websites adn see waht you like them call the local stores and see if tehy have them instock save you from getting P I S S E D O F F at the shops like i would! heahheae

What jacket and pants you get deebee?

As for the boots, when I wnet ski boot shopping I knew the brand I wanted then it was just a case of finding a shop with my size(29!). Spend the time with a good fitter is my advice if you have the advantage of having NORMAL feet size.

snowboard freaks girl started it. Sh*'s a b*d girl, yo* can te*l.

I wouldn't bother looking around too much if you've found something that doesn't hurt your feet and your budget. I agree with miteyak on that - there's more profitable ways of spending time.

some thirty-two boots come with a inner lining that they put in a convection oven, and then u put your foot in it and it molds to your foot. ive heard great things about the level of comfort.

i bought these boots but they didnt have the oven where i went, but they are still damn comfortable. the inner lining is pretty comfortable to start with. plus they are anti-bacteria so wont smell. i was lucky. i got the boots in a size 28 for 12900 yen.

Quite a few makers have boots with that type of lining. Vans certainly do.

While cooking the thing in the oven is recommended for moulding the liner to your foot permanently, the warmth of your feet apparently does a similar job.

What d'you mean by 'thirty-two'? Is that a brand or a size? I could prolly do with some of them!

Again, this is all very good info, thankyou.

Could anyone advise whether boarding boots are victims of gimmick marketing? ie heaps of not very needed features that help to confuse the buyer into buying a more expensive boot than they needed.

Also, can anyone expand on SBF-girls claim that some boots only work with same company bindings?

(BTW - I am looking to buy strap ins).

I really appreciate the answers so far, cheers!

thirty-two is strictly a snowboarding boot brand. www.thirtytwo.com
they make some of the lightest boots on the market. i think they are a canadian company if i am correct.

thanks for the link amanda... but I have to say that is the worst web site i have ever seen.

what is it with snow boarding ? so many sites seem to be all grooved up at the expense of easy to access info.

deeb's..... burton is all a scam to make you buy just their product....

you have heard of K2 Clickers? they are boots that dont have bindings they are solid boots with a metal bar on each side of the boot in and out.... they can only be used with K2 clicker "bindings" they are like step ins... they are not very good cayse ya get snow and ice stuck in the clicker....

but burtons bindings and boards have a different sc re w set up to other boards so the standard 8 holes are positioned differently adn they only fit burton bings....

flux and flow bindings fit normal standard boards they fit rad airs they fit palmers heaps of other brands...

its best not to get locked into one brand cause it limits you sooo much....

my mate has rad air board flow bindings and some other strange brand boots....

mix and match...!!

im not sure what other brands are like that but i know Burton and K2 Clickers are money mongers!
