powder is that soft stuff that lies on the ground immediately after a snow fall.

 

Enough of it, and the runs are so schweeeet, provided the groomers haven't rolled it into the underlying base.

 

Best place to find powder is off-piste in wind shadows \:D

Powder is very light and dry snow, that is in the form of specks rather flakes. Until the temperature rises, or somebody goes over it on a snowboard, it can shift about in the wind. That's why it's usually found in protected areas (protected from the wind, sun, and of course, other snowboarders). It's great when you find it somewhere on a mountain, but a real nuisance when you get it on your front path, because sweeping it off is hard work.

 

Riding in powder involves more pivoting around on the back flat of your board rather than carving on your edges, and so feels more like surfing (I should think...)

 

There's also heavier kinds of snow that isn't quite powder, but is nice to ride ungroomed.
