actually the best place is not one of the big ones. You need a car (or a train), but theres a sweet little spot called yanaba. Its a couple of stops before kamishiro (if youre coming from matsumoto).

ETA: just saw the snowjapan page list it as having no nighta any more. Thats a shame because it seemed like a great little place to ride.

If you still have some energy left, or took a day off and are now itching to get on the mountain, we highly recommend you check out Yanaba Snow Resort for a Nighter (Japanese for night skiing). As you can see on the course map above, half the park is lit up as well as the "cross course line" off on the skiers left. A "nighter" is only ¥1500 and includes a drink. Good fun when you go with a bunch of friends, you are either shredding or watching your friends have a go while riding the lift.

To get to Yanaba from Goryu, walk to Kamishiro station (10 minutes) and take the 9 minute, 200 yen ride to Yanaba Ski Jo Mae Station (the resort has it's own train station!).

Yanaba is quite the trip on the train though, You realistically need a car to make it worth your while.

If you miss the last train a Yanaba you are taking a 100 dollar taxi home or hitch hiking.

Yanaba has made a kids slope indoors for parents and really youngling lessons. About 5 meters in

length but its warm and the kids wont get bored in the lodge.
