It's not so much too much snow as too cold and no one wants to be up there in the middle of winter. Kurodake is not really a ski resort, it's just a place where skiing is possible when there's snow. There's a ropeway which is most popular in the summer and autumn which has no easy, or cleared route back to the base and if you don't know your way down can be downright dangerous because of all the cliff lines. Above that is one small lift with little vertical which does little more than save you 20 mins or so of walking to get a bit further up the mountain. The skiing off this lift is not great and for me only worth it very early season for the novelty factor. The best slopes are above this lift up to the peak and this area in Jan is generally extremely cold and bleak. Later in Feb into the spring months the area becomes much more hospitable.
