Went to a local festival today for the first time in a few years and decided to snap a few pictures. As far as festivals in Japan go I think this one has a couple of interesting events. Tonight was the temochi hanabi (手æŒã¡èŠ±ç«) which are hand-held fireworks and for those who haven't already seen an event like this live I would highly recommend it. Each person who participates is called a hanabishi (花ç«å¸«) and they are responsible for making their own fireworks. Basically the fireworks are made of black powder stuffed inside a length of bamboo that is reinforced with hemp rope wound around it. When lit, if the fireworks are made correctly they will shot a giant fountain of sparks into the air emitting a loud hissing nice followed by a loud explosion... It's awesome to watch! Here are some pictures of the festival.
