When my parents got divorced they sat down together and decided who was getting what and then went to their respective lawyers with what they had decided. Both parties have to have a separate lawyer to get divorced in the UK. Both the lawyers wanted more for the parent they were representing and convinced them that they were getting a bad deal. It seemed to me that the lawyers caused arguments between my parents. In my familiy's case it would have been simpler if they could have just gone to the registry office or whoever hands out divorces, showed them what they had decided and got a stamp on a bit of paper.

Then again, the hanko at the city hall system in Japan has its problems too.

I think those sports lawyers get a great deal. At least 10% of their clients's signons.

Don't know if family law works that way, comission basis. But that can be the only incentive to haveing fights with each other. That as well as the protracted consultations.
