telechick 0
so, here`s a question... I have many days off coming up but not much cash... what`s the cheapest way to stay around the mountains? Or in the mountains... is there a hut guide to Japan? how are the huts here organized? M
kintaro 0
try checking youth hostels . I have tried a couple of times and they were nice and clean. Most recently I stayed in one at Hachimantai ski resort.
miteyak 0
Cheapest places can be found at some resorts (not many) bunk style accomodation, upwards of 1000 yen. I think there are more places springing up for around 3,000 for a bed. Worth checking out pensions, in some areas, 5-6,000 yen will get you a bed and two square meals. Bargain hard if you want to stay for a while, business is very slow midweek. 'Personed' mountain huts are not cheap, around 6,000 yen for the luxury of a cold hard floor. most are closed in winter but, if you get an area map, the ones marked in black are open all year. The maps that cover the mountain areas in Japan can be found in most book stores, along with full hut info in an included booklet. Un-personed huts do exist occasionally, pretty basic though (will you be requiring a door?) Better off w/ a snowhole.
