I watched a program yesterday about an egyptian baby girl who when in the womb had partially split as an embryo which would normally result in twins. In her case the split had happend late and her twin had grown attached to her head, as is the case in conjoined twins. Unusually in this case their was not enough blood for the second baby to develop beyond a head and part of the throat. What was really crazy was that the head was concious, or at least it was mentally independant of the twin which it was essentially a parasite of. It would appear to cry, and was often awake when the fully developed twin was asleep. Eventually after about 14 months, they removed the parasitic twin and the developed one survived, despite them sharing a blood supply ect.. Unfortunately it looks like the little girl is brain damaged but it was still a pretty amazing case. It kinda raises a few moral questions as well, and debate over exactly how concious the 'head' was actually able to be. Reproduction throws up all kinds of possibilities for odd things, fascinating if your able to get past the initial squeamish response. Link to post Share on other sites
