Study has found that ten percent of the population—that is, the same number of people living in Tokyo—live alone. This is so much of a problem that a new business has sprung up. If you live alone, you can pay ¥10,000 to an unazuki-ya (“nodding shop”), who will arrange for someone to sit with you for two hours and listen to you natter away, nodding agreeably at whatever you say to keep you going. I wonder if anybody would like to try a 'hard truths' version of the service. "Oh, for Chrissakes, pull your ****ing socks up!", "Goddamn it, would you stop your miserable self-pity RIGHT NOW!", "Look, if you feel that way about it, why not just go out and get laid?
