  1. one of my favourites is

"So is New Zealand really the capitol of Australia?"

another great one im sure youve all heard...

"do u laiku dogsu?" (i always reply that yes, they are very tasty).

of course, u can probably blame me for some of their dumb questions......

Its amazing how many believe me when I tell em I work as a 'shooer' in Australia. You know, I stand near the road near the harbour bridge, and shoo the kangaroos away!

ahh yes, but your forgetting that conditions are great, with an excellent 2cm top-up of man-made snow in some areas..... lol.gif

actually, heres an excerpt from my favourite resort, Mt Selwyn (my brother was actually the poster boy for them a few years back)
    ------------------------
    24hr Snowfall
    0 cm

    Snowdepth - Average
    15 cm

The cover is in great shape following cold overnight temperatures, and looks set to stay that way throughout the day.

    oh, and thats not all!!
"Township is open to the very top, and New Chum Bowl is 60% full of man made snow. The Ski School rope tow is in great shape for first timers, and the Toboggan Park is open. "

    awesome!!!! confused.gif

Have fun in Japan anyway, and forget the park. You don't buy a seasons pass to powder mecca to ride a half pipe ;\)
So you dont count Australian resorts as resorts? No doubt u wouldnt be saying that if youve ever been to Mt Selwyn!!

And i disagree with the half-pipe comment.
EVERY resort has a start and an end to the season (+ the odd dry spells), i dont think theres a single resort in the world (outdoors anyway!) that always has fresh snow.
  4. hmmm, from memory arent they the same mountain?

I did the one with the (brand new) big ropeway during goldenweek a few years back, when all the other resorts were shut due to lack of snow. It was quite surreal, as it felt like summer, and all the koosa (yellow sand) made the snow look like sanddunes (which they practically were!).

A mate went once though during winter and almost died in an avalanche, so be very careful as fattwins said.

  5. dude, i did exactly what ur talkin about a few years back.

Sapporo is a great city to live, all the nightlife is close together, and the mountains not far off either.

There r plenty of nearbe crappy resorts, eg Moiwa is the closest (but no boarders). Makomanai is absolutely shithouse, but has a great halfpipe.

The only 2 good resorts are Kokusai and Teine - both r very small however, and Teine doesnt get the same snow as other places (and kokusai is flatter than Niseko!)

To get to Niseko, u gotta spend 2 1/2 to 3 hours in the bus, or a pesky train ride can also be done. Costs about $25 each way from memory (dont quote me on that).

Sendai is also fairly close to Zao-san....and is regularly voted as the most livable city in Japan by the Japanese....and unlike Sapporo, isnt covered in ice for 4 months a year (more annoying than it sounds, espec if it thaws and freezes on NYE! ouch x 10).

  6. awesomness!!

Anywayz, i remember a mate of mine got a 3 yr working Visa....once he quit after his 1 yr contract(i took his job!), he moved to Niseko and started working as a freelance photographer - im fairly sure he wasnt sponsored.

As my job finishes on the 17th of December (they actually called me last night and said 'oh, ur gunna finish 1 day earlier than your contract original contract said, is that alright?'!!!) that gives me till March 17th anyway, which would probably be enough. If i cant find work, ill prolly just bite the bullet and spend savings the whole time....hopefully i can find a japanese backpackers for around 1500y a night (or someone to room share) and do the instant raamen thing like i did in Niseko.

People were saying that it's your visa. I'm not so sure about that. The company is sponsoring you. I think if you get another job then you're fine but otherwise I'd say there's the potential to get your visa cancelled. Especially in these days of 'terror'.
yeah, best bet is probably to just tell em Im leaving, that way they wont call up imigration...
westgate said i can keep my visa on the condition i find someone else to sponsor me - perhaps its much easier to get sponsorship once i have a visa? coz there is no way in hell im gunna be doing a full-time job to keep my visa, i wanna do some serious boarding this northern winter!!!
  8. hmmm, ill have to wait n see what happens re the visa.

Anyway, after more hunting n digging around on the site, ive noticed Naeba/Kagura also seems like a v good resort for the 1 season ticket.

Are there any good reasons not to go here for a season?

And yes, Niseko does indeed have an incredible nighta.....although when i waz there, it lacked any sort of park riding at night (which would b the first thing i opened at night if i owned a resort)
