Snow in Japan
eskimobasecamp replied to jeanniel's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
sounds sick dizzzy cant wait to see your pics --- heli-skiing in alaska is definitely on the list of MUST do adventures for me, but $$$$$$! ps everyone - big snowflakes have been chomping down in hakuba all morning, a few inches of wet powder accumulating in the valley. probably back to the spring heatwave again 2moro though... sigh. -
next time, i'll drop the same chute area, cross the flats and drop the longer chute at the same aspect on the lowest ridge, when the conditions are right the exit out of there is shorter in terms of being in danger, but still pretty gnarly, in fact the exits all over happo have terrain traps etc. i guess the south faces are an early morning thing.... but yeh the gullies down there are gnar.

>Not to keep beating the dog but... Why exactly did you guys want to ski this line? ...well AK heard there was this sick waterfall gap jump down there, so we went to jump the gap we skied the chute off the middle ridge, then down the middle gully where the shadow and sun meet. i'll get photoshop going and draw some lines and show you where the waterfall is etc.

Nozawa-Hakuba by car?
eskimobasecamp replied to Mudguts's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I once drove along that 406 road in autumn at night, and i know i have a tendency to exaggerate stuff, but i thought i was gonna die or something ---- holy moly it was scary! The drive in from nagano is epic, over massive ravines into tunnels in rockfaces, then the houses and cars disappear, signs are all in kanji, there are wild animals lurking, it's narrow and winding with huge drops off the side, then about 5 hours later you see the lights of hakuba and wonder where the landing strip is because it looks like the view from a fecking aeroplane!!! Saying that i drove up this road a -

Nozawa-Hakuba by car?
eskimobasecamp replied to Mudguts's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Quote: Originally posted by yamayamayama: Sorry I don't know many names but it is easy. There is no expressway needed. Take Route 117 from Nozawa to Nagano. Easy road. http://www.snowjapan.com/e/maps/snow-jap...nozawa-map.html The road then goes through Nagano and once you pass the main city area you will turn right onto a road that takes you to Hakuba (it is signposted). You'll end up approaching Hakuba on 406 as below http://www.snowjapan.com/e/maps/snow-jap...hakuba-map.html NO NO NO do not take that 406 road, it's a nightmare, well sketchy, narrow with big drop -

Seems it's a game of luck at airport sometimes...... i've never had to pay excess, but i've taken so much shit on planes before - i remember once i got on a Ryanair flight to Stockholm with 7 bags. I bought so much stuff in Sydney on the way back from NZ last summer, I had to put my ski boots in my hand luggage. I often check in for flights with a couple of really heavy pieces of hand luggage and get someone else (someone i know!) to hold them while i check in for the flight. After you pass that desk the X-ray people can't do anything, though I once got shouted at in Heathrow by an X-ray pe
