  1. Can't really complain Nicole. We weren't exactly the cleanest chaps ourselves.

At Uni we always had to go to the hardware store on Monday morning because we used the front fence for a BBQ on Sat night. The girls we were living with didn't appreciate it too much.

Haven't had a flatmate since being in Japan (except the wife).

  2. keisharyo means small vehicles. Keijidosha is the small cars.

I've had a few too many and riden home quite often.

Remember one night heading to a girlies place, for a little late night action, and went straight thru a T intersection and plowed into a rice paddy full of water. I was wearing my only suit. However the story ends well, as only it can in Japan.

Imagine showing up covered in crap, smelling like a brewery and still getting in the door.

Not only did she put me in the shower, but drove around to my place the next day to pick up some clean clothes while I slept it off.

  3. Curt: Most airlines have given up the reconfirmation process.

I imagine it was to do with over booking. Most airlines book about 120% and then hope for no shows. With the reconfirmation clause they were giving themselves an excuse to bump you from an overbooked flight.

Works the otherway to, as if you show up early and ask if the flight is overbooked you can get upgraded to business. Esp good if you are flying to somewhere in the USA and they want to reroute you.

  4. I've found most of the Asian airlines (developed nations) to be pretty good.

Worst has to be Northwest (known in the industry as Northworst), but it is not just the meals but service also.

When you consider it costs about US$8300 to land a Jumbo at Narita. Add in fuel, staff ,facilites costs etc, and you can still fly most places in the world for under 10man. I don't think there's a lot to complain about.

  5. What an awful list. There's much wussier songs around than those.

Off the top of my head:

Anything by the Carpenters (we need a graemlin for vomit here)

That song that goes "when I think of you I touch myself.."

How about JPop. Anything by a toyboy band.

  6. I'm not sure, but HIS is about the only one the really specializes in discount air tickets. Most travel generate income other ways. The international discount air fares are about the only product that sells where the agent is free to add whatever they like as a mark up. Almost everything else is on a commission type basis (i.e. X% of the sale price) and included in the rate on the brochure.

  7. BP:

I agree that HIS is not faultless. If HIS had thought this thing through, then they could have easily come up with a better solution (several of which have been proposed on this thread). But ANA and the ministry seem to be saying "nothing to do with us", which I think is crap.

HIS has basically come up with another version of the soapland argument mentality here ala "No Gaijin can come( ;\) )in here because all Gaijin have big Penis'"

Depending on your situation, this is either a offensive moral issue, or sound economic policy.

The only real answer is as snobee says, and do away with this type of ticket. Seems logical, but you know as well as I do, what may seem logical to many of us doesn't sit well with these 50-something mid level managers.

Everyone here pretty much agrees that the idea of getting penalized for not using a seat that you have already paid for is senseless. But it is one of the conditions on the fare. Just because it is stupid doesn't make it any less valid when it comes to the contract you enter into when you purchase the ticket. All HIS had to do was make this clear to the buyer when they purchased the ticket.

  8. If a gaijin wrestler takes Japanese citizenship, do they still get counted in the quota.

I'm not 100% sure but didn't the Hawaiians have to become Japanese Citizens to become Yokozuna?

(Same with Santos and Ramos for Soccer)

  9. Snobee:

Daver's matter of fact point is is not the black and white issue it appears to be. What legally constitutes "unfair" discrimination is a very fuzzy issue in Japan.

What people seem to be missing is that it was ANA who set the ticketing policy. It is them who charge HIS for the seat not used. For ANA to turn around and say this is not on, when it is their policy that has forced HIS into this decision is a bit rank if you ask me.

Ditto for the Ministry who must approve all airfares the airline sets. (Same section of the same law)

  10. My guess is that someone in your appartment bldg has set up a network and was unable to work out how to set up the security and left it as an open network.

Make sure you have a firewall on and make sure you have no shared folders on your laptop as it may be a way for someone to get in.

Otherwise enjoy surfing the net for free. clap.gif
