  1. Kintaro, Are you going to be hands on? Or set it up and get someone to run it for you?

    Finding good staff is a prick of a job. Making the leap from employee to employer is huge. Made me see my old bosses in a new light.

    Don't make my biggest mistake, neeeeeeeeeeever hire someone you know. Hire someone you are able to fire if they don't work out.

  2. Biggest thing I think is to do something you're interested in personally. If it's not something you enjoy then you'll get bored quickly.

    We never had a business plan as such, but then again it was never a huge risk or required a large outlay.(Internet businesses are great like that)

    Also you need to be flexible as things crop up that you wouldn't have dreamed of. OUr business is running very smoothly now, but at the beginning it took a while to get everyone on the same wavelength.

    One final thing, never treat your business as a finished product, there are always ways to improve it, or develop it further.

    Good Luck

  3. Back to the list though:

    Books--> 2nd hand bokos are great

    DVDs CDs --> Download off the internet

    Toys --> 50/50

    Jewellry --> Don't own any, wife does what she wants

    Sports equipment --> Only buy new

    Timeshares --> New or old Never in a million years

    Cars --> nuff said

    Software/console games --> 50/50

    Office furniture -->50/50

    Hand tools --> Don't know how to use them in most cases.

  4. Kintaro; I wouldn't worry about the moron comment as it probably applies to me anyway. I know a little about a few things but f_all about most.

    First car we bought was a SUV. Bought it for 2.5mill (wife got him down from 3.2mill).

    Drove it for 5 years. Shipped it back to NZ and got about 1.5mill for it (as opposed to 600,000yen offered in Japan).

  5. Probably seem like a prat here, but since I've been in Japan, we have only bought new cars.

    Reasons why:

    1. I know nothing about cars and wouldn't know a good deal from a bad one

    2. Generally about 2% financing.

    3. After service. We would get a call from the salesman about once a month asking how the car was doing. If we had a problem, he'd be right around to pick it up and fix it. We never paid for anything (apart from oil changes) even if the car was 5-6 years old. Since moving to Hakuba he has still been in constant touch and has the closest Nissan dealer make sure everything is taken care of.

    4. You get exactly the extras you want

    Value is not just what it's worth on the market, but also what it's worth to you.

  6. We're thinking of buying a dog. We know nothing about it but being doing a little research.

    What we are after is a medium-large size dog, good with kids, and can survive in the cold.

    Has anyone ever bought a dog in Japan?

    I don't want to pay the prices for the pure breeds they seem to sell at the home centers.

  7. spud

    couple more war stories for ya.

    One night after a few too many tequlias for some reason we had to get up on the roof. It had 2 seams on it and looked like an upside down W. There were 2 chimneys in the middle V. Going over the top of the first seam I lost my balance and took out the guy wires supporting one of the chimneys, which came down on my mate who was climbing up behind me knocking him clean off the roof.

    For a few secs I though I'd killed him, but I heard him laughing as he straddles the chimney.

    Next morning we had no idea what drove us to get up on the roof anyway.

    Landlord didn't notice that there was one less chimney when we moved out at the end of the year.

  8. According to one source, Royal bonking is controlled mainly by the imperial household agency, who are present throughout foreplay and leave after instructing the Prince to "insert here".

    It is well planned in advance and only happens once in a ao-tsuki (青月)period.

    There is no truth however to the rumor that the princesses must squeeze the prince's left nut if she wants a boy, or his right nut if she wants a girl.
