  1. Hi gamera, it's not a fixed time but your name should be off the list fairly soon after you have logged off. You'll also notice sometimes that when you first login you don't instantly appear on the list - it takes a short while for you to appear up there. We have no control over the system as such and it's not 100% accurate at showing exactly who is online at any one time, there's some short delay involved - but generally it's not that far off what is happening. Hope that helps!

  2. A new Setting Journals Feature - "Two Years On", has been put online.

"Towards the end of June this year the annual rainy season finally came on, and the impact that a sudden downpour has on a parched mountain is quite dramatic. As the water moves downhill, it both gathers momentum and volume, creating streams that erode earth traveled over while picking up sand, rocks etc. in the process. All of this eventually comes crashing down on the asphalt of the fire road leading up the mountain, and the result can be seen in the images immediately below."

  3. A new feature - "Yuzawa Statistics 2004/5" Season - has been put online.

    "October 23rd, 2004.

The temperatures were dropping, resorts and hotels (and Snow Japan) were busy preparing for the first snow of the season and looking forward to a good winter season.

Then it happened... a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Chuetsu region of Niigata to the north of Yuzawa town around Ojiya and Nagaoka city. Within one hour there had been three extremely powerful earthquakes and multiple strong aftershocks. While the towns and villages around Nagaoka were by far the worst hit, Yuzawa (which is about 50km to the south of the epicenter of the quake) also got a strong shaking and hotels and buildings had to be evacuated. It turned out to be one very long night for many people - and a long month as countless aftershocks hit the region..."

  4. A new Interview - with forum member "gamera" - has been put online.

"As you may well know if you visit these Forums, "gamera" is one of the popular Japanese regular posters over there. But who is this mysterious creature?! We spoke to gamera - whose name is Mr Masaki Bono. In 1989 he decided to quit his banking job in the city and to follow his dream of opening up his own business in a snow village. Here's his story of how he started his new business in Hakuba and tried to change with the times.

    Over to you, gamera...."

  5. A new Setting Journals Feature - "A Day in the Life - Epilogue", has been put online.

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/features/setting-journals-26.html

"Have you ever started a project with little idea of either how to do it or how it will pan out? Like life, I found this “A Day in The Life” mini-series to be something that had to be put together over time in ever-changing conditions. A year has passed from the start of this project, and almost 18 months from the day that is the subject of this mini-series. Also like life, although the experience raised more questions than it answered, it provided just a touch more perspective. Thus, a further ray of light was shed on resort life at Arai Mountain & Spa."

  6. A new Feature - "Working at Japanese Snow Resorts", has been put online.

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/features/working-at-japanese-ski-resorts.html

"Over the years we have had many people write in to us at Snow Japan asking about working at Japanese resorts - what is available and how to go about finding work. Often we are unable to help out as there really is no one way to get into working at resorts in Japan, and it is often a case of knowing people or being lucky more than anything else.

We wanted to get some feedback from some operators in popular snow resort regions that employ non-Japanese and so we recently asked them about their thoughts on the subject. On this page you'll find their responses."

  8. A new Setting Journals Feature - "A Day in The Life - 9PM-12 Midnight", has been put online.

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/features/setting-journals-25.html

"It never used to be this way when I was growing up as a skier. My family would drive several hours to the town below the slopes, stay in a cheap hotel, and then the next morning venture up a long and rough unpaved road to the slopes. The process would then be reversed at the end of the day, leaving us all exhausted & cranky. Today the concept of enjoying oneself “on snow” is both more widely accepted and in fact demanded. Guests stay in luxurious accommodations at the foot of the slopes, bathe in splendor, & enjoy resort dining & Spa services well into the evening. Welcome to the part where one sees, in my case anyways, how the other half has been living!"
