  1. Only just noticed this. Which data are you referring to?

If you are referring to resort snow depth data on our resort pages, it is not written by tour companies. It is provided by resorts and is entered into our system.

     Quote:
heck even i know that people with vested interested write them
We are very strict with our Now reports and put a lot of effort into making sure that they are not biased. The snow depth on those reports is the snow depth as reported by resorts. If they themselves bend a truth, there's unfortunately nothing we can do about that - apart from comment about it in our commentaries. The reports are NOT "written by tour companies", each one is written by different people who are based in the area. Whatever those people do in their lives other than our reports however, we require them to be totally unbiased and to report exactly what is happening. If it is raining or the conditions are crap, that's what is written. No form of bending the truth or business promotion is allowed in those reports and we keep a very close eye on the reports to make sure that stays the case. If we feel that a line has been crossed, we will contact the reporter and change the report.

It is very important to us that our Now reports tell our readers what it is like out there. Thats the whole concept of the pages. We are NOT doing them to advertise the area (although of course that is a result of the pages existing).

And on that note, if you ever feel that any of our reports are not keeping to that fundamental concept, we totally encourage you to let us know and we will take action.

"Jigokudani Yaenkoen. You might not have heard that name but you have probably heard about a place in Nagano where you can see "snow monkeys" (Japanese Macaque) taking an onsen. I had often heard about Jidokudani and even driven past the entrance on the way up to Shiga Kogen more than a few times, but until recently I had never actually stopped to check it out. (I suppose I was always in too much of a rush to get to the snow at Shiga Kogen). I now wish I had found out about it earlier...."

  3. I've just been asked to post a message on here to let you know that it is going to be next week when we are able post these results and stuff. My colleague - the one who has been putting this all together - has not been very well at all today and he won't be able to finish things up and get things online tomorrow. \:\(

Very sorry about this, please accept our apologies....... early next week, promise!

  4. A new feature has been put online. This time we had a talk with popular Forum member Toque about his experiences on the snow and more...

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/features/interviews-toque.html

"I was born July 1979 in the beautiful town of Chilliwack, British Columbia. That’s in Canada if you didn’t know. My father introduced me to the mountains at an early age with backpacking and ski trips a regular occurrence. I skied and hiked fairly often right from the age of six. Chilliwack is about 100km east of Vancouver right up against some big mountains - to the south, Chilliwack has the North Cascades and to the north, the Coast Mountains. It’s a great location for somebody that enjoys outdoor life. After high school it was off to University where I studied Geography at a small local school. They only offered an arts degree in my discipline but I was able to study the physical aspects which keep me entertained. I often spent my time in the Geography lab looking over the topographic maps planning trips for the future.... I love topo maps...

"Ever wanted to come to Japan and get some of the powder you have been hearing so much about? Done a great deal of skiing/boarding overseas and perhaps met some Japanese folk doing the same? Have a significant other that also wants to come to Japan but worried you may not be able to find work/accommodation together? If you answered yes to any of the above, you are not alone...

  6. We're happy to be able to introduce a new section to Snow Japan today called "Jobs Available".

In this new section companies and organizations that are offering employment opportunities in winter resort regions are introduced, and to start off we introduce four companies. We hope to be adding to this, so keep an eye on this new section.

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/resorts/jobs-available/index.html

Please note that this is an introductory service provided by Snow Japan that enables employers and potential employees to find each other. Snow Japan is not involved in any communications between readers and employers and is in no way responsible for, or involved in, any eventual employment that occurs due to any of the listings on this page. Please direct any questions that you may have to the companies listed in the section.

We hope that some of our readers looking for work will be able to find what they are looking for with this new service.

We also invite any companies or organisations that have any relevant positions available and are interested in letting Snow Japan readers know about those opportunities to contact us at editor@snowjapan.com.

  7. A new feature - "Boarding Fuji" by Glen Falting - has been put online.

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/features/features-boarding-fuji.html

"It's 4:30 a.m. and none of the staff are awake when we unlock the front door of the hotel and load our gear into the rental van. I’m a bit worried that if someone wakes, they’ll think we’re skipping out without paying. But no one stirs, which is just as well. It would be difficult for us to explain in our broken Japanese that we're just on our way to climb and then snowboard down Mount Fuji and that we'll return later.

My friend Oli (a fellow rider who also moonlights as a lawyer) and I comprise the summit team, while our wives hold down base camp in a local town's cafe. Oli and I do a lot of snowboarding together. We work for the same law firm in Tokyo, and together we've explored many of the ski resorts around Japan. This past season, equipped with snowshoes and avalanche gear, we started to explore the hills and backcountry readily accessible from the local resorts. As they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and after a few days' worth of backcountry experience, Oli and I are both confident that we can take on Ol' Man Fuji."

  8. A new feature - "The Fukui Fellowship" by Sam Baldwin - has been put online.

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/features/features-90.html

"I grab four bottles of Yebisu beer from the fridge and give the landlord a customary nod. I’m at Bar Yumeya in Ono, Fukui, a cosy hangout for local lovers of snow. Yasu, the owner, is somewhat of a legend in these parts, having conquered several Himalayan summits in India, Pakistan, China and Nepal. An ice pick, snowshoes, and many pictures of sabre-toothed peaks decorate the walls; souvenirs from past expeditions.

Like many foreigners in Japan, I came here to teach English, an easy option to pay the way, having heard intriguing tales of deep powder and amazing tree skiing in an exotic land. Though snow was not the only reason for my desire to visit Japan, it certainly played a key role in my decision to leave gloomy Britain and explore more of the world."

  9. A new Setting Journals feature - "White Season 2005-2006 Report" - has been put online.

    http://www.snowjapan.com/e/features/setting-journals-28.html

"Summer 2005 in Japan was the kind where tarmacs at airports soften to the point that loaded down planes sometimes get stuck & need to be pulled free. There was little respite from the heat during daytime, but nights began to cool significantly. Occasionally a typhoon would blow over the Japanese archipelago, cooling things down at the upper elevations.

A few years back in September the resort hosted a country music festival (featuring Roseanne Cash, The Charlie Daniels Band & others) on a neighboring plateau about 1,000 meters above sea level. The bands that day (who had been expecting to play at the resort) froze in the typhoon at that elevation. Upon return to the resort, a shivering band member came off the bus and immediately asked for directions to the nearest bar (whiskey was required to warm her up). The Plateau concerned actually closes each winter due to the amount of snow there, & is only accessible via Pisten Bully..."
