Here in Hawaii Maui onions are quite good but I don't really know of other islands' "famous local products." I've heard Kaua'i has their manju.
Shaved ice brah!! -

Interesting what happens when better management comes in and takes over. Back in the day there was no difference. -

Osaka - Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki are two that come to mind, but Kansai fu Okonomiyaki is rubbish compared to Hiroshima. Mino beer is pretty good too. -

Three resorts MP, and back when I spent a season there it was almost that much for Hirafu alone. At that time they were doing the three different parts of Hirafu individually too.

I think rather than just big mountains, they are talking about steep, hairy, dangerous lines, of which there are many in Japan. Lines around Honshu are as steep and crazy as lines in AK, minus the heli, making them that much tougher IMHO. -

Yes, some of us have another white powder addiction -
Nice. That photo is perfect

Out of interest, GN, ..... are they?
Or, are there some who are?
It's not been unknown for numerous places to hire people who don't have working visas. 1st season I worked here I didn't have a working visa!! Best leave it at that I think...
I have known many people who havent had visas in both Hakuba and Niseko. It seems pretty easy to get in the country on a 3 month tourist visa and score a job, then bugger off at the end, or make a visa run to Korea and come back. I wonder how those companies pull that off? Wouldnt the ward offices find out?!?! -
G.N., there is tons of great terrain in Hokkers as I said myself. The best area for sure (at least that Ive been to) would be the Asahikawa area - insane.
>Using an inbound area of the resort like Strawberrys as an example of what Hokkaido has to offer in terms of extreme terrain is more than a little misleading.
I should have said Niseko, not Hokkers. The fact is that Niseko doesnt really have the terrain. (broken record here? ) Off the peak to Goshiki and Mizuno are among the better runs you can get there. Haru is pretty steep but its short. Super short. My only complaint about Niseko is the lack of terrain and long runs, as well as the flat traverse sections.
My point to Mitch was that if he wants terrain then I wouldnt go to Niseko in Hokkaido.

Hope that clarifies what I am saying...sorry for being a bit confusing.
If you're looking for cliffs and good terrain, then Niseko isnt really what you are after. There is a much better cliff band at Rusutsu from about 3-5 meters but that isnt that big really. I know M.P. mentioned Kurodake, some stuff over at Asahidake and Furano, too. But some of the biggest terrain I saw in Hokkaido was Tokachidake. It was siiiiiiiiiick. I think at peak season most of it is closed out so later in the season (I would think) would be a better bet as a lot of it was just closed out to us forcing us to spend more time over at Furano rather than touring.
As Ger said, Hakuba is a much better bet for what you are after.
This pic is sustained 40+ at 1000+ meters of vert. Straight top to bottom.

In Hokkaido some of the really famous runs like "strawberries" at Niseko is 25-30 for what... 400 meters max? If that? I think 300 or so is prolly more realistic. Drop off the back of the peak and you will have some fun.
I have spent the last 2 winters up North but will be around Nagano/Niigata this winter for sure. Both are amazing and have so much to offer both on the slopes and off. TGR offers lots of info on terrain too. -
Not bad for a new ski in Japan for sure. Pray for powder in Hokkaido? Not that necessary!!
-
Old school I was at goes to Yokoteyama and it was primarily students when we were there which was nice cuz 2 of those runs gave me some of the most amazing powder runs of my life, and nobody was riding em with me. My new school goes to Noz

nice Sand, I saw em on sale for about $350 USD. How much were they?

props to you all for sharing knowledge and stories!
Can anyone recommend a good text book about snow pack and the mechanics of avalanches? (I like to get nerdy)
Cheers
Id start with The Avalanche Handbook and Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain for starters - doing a class is essential, and practice what you learn. It means nothing if you dont know your beacon and dont practice with it. -

I guess for people outside of Japan, but this debate Ive been having since Ive been living here and learned about it. No biggie, the media makes spectacles outta things it wants to or is able to, and doesnt when it can avoid it or is paid to shut up. -
It has been known long before that...

Im still waiting for everybody here to admit that Sumo is fixed...thatll be the day.

Itd be interesting to see what & based on age dont have passports around the world. I think some areas almost force people to have them like Europe. If you got on a train you could travel through 4-5 countries in just an hour or two. Necessity is different. I never had one till I was 22ish.

Also looking forward to seeing some skiing/snowboarding pics!! Maybe you will turn this place around like back when SJ-Andrew ran it...ahhh the old days

Alpha Blondy, Aswad, Third World, Peter Tosh, Lucky Dube, Black Uhuru...I know its not Reggae per say, but Iz, damn I like Iz! They all bring back so many memories. For Bob Marley I really like Exodus, Them Belly Full, Trenchtown Rock, and Satisfy my Soul.

9 weeks is sweet though! I remember when I used to get 3 months...those were the days!!
Wii vs PS3 vs Xbox360

So I picked up a new tv and thought that a new game system, since I have had my Xbox for 8 years, would be nice. Which would you recommend? I have played the big three and think theyre all pretty fun. Wii seems like good fun, but I just dont know how good the other games are comparatively since Ive done like Wii sports and Mario. I love Halo type games, sports, action, whatever. Maybe its time to hit up Yodobashi camera and play upstairs for a little while
