Like you know where it comes from, you live on Shikoku :p

    It's Tohoku, good 'nuff wink
  2. Id love to try all of those pie eater...look delish!

Drank Kirin's 秋味 last night for the first time this year - quite pleased. Very nice flavor with a little kick to it at 6%. Of all Japan's mass produced, non micro variety, I think its my favorite. I wonder if Ginga Kogen (from Yamagata??) would be considered a mass produced? Quite enjoy their white smile

How close to Niseko would that get?

It depends from where in Tohoku...do they mean Aomori? If there, then prolly pretty quickly. I could see it being less than 2 hours from there with the main stops prolly being Hakodate, Kutchan, then Sapporo. There isnt much around the way between Hakodate and Sapporo - quite beautiful Inaka.

In the long scheme of things, especially when people are coming from 12 hour flights from overseas, it's not like 20 mins saves THAT much time. But, on some occasions, that could help you get the last connection to whatever destination you are going, so in that situation thats pretty useful.

Itd be nicer if the buses from Shin Chitose to Niseko werent 2.5 plus hours. Quite a long smoke break at that automatic piano million dollar bathroom too. Think they couldnt put in a bullet train and make it, say, 45 mins? wink

just uploaded some new shots from the togean islands in central sulawesi. we spent two weeks lounging around on a couple of islands.

the first place we stayed was a nice low-key beach resort place. super comfy ,great vibe, but not the nicest beach. good snorkelling nearby, and we could paddle outrigger canoes to the other islands. pretty fun.

then we went and stayed somewhere a bit more basic for the second week - just a hut on a beach and grandma grilling fish for us twice a day. no power, not even enough water to have a mandy (ladle shower). but the weather was fantastic, isolated beaches you could swim to just around each headland and mind-blowing snorkelling. the highlight for me was swimming with a school of 25 huge napolean fish.

The entire notion of somebody having to learn their native language first is so off the mark its not even funny. Our brains are naturally wired to learn languages. There are tons of examples out there to support it: twins being separated at birth and in different countries/environments, bilingual school education, returnee students, etc. If somebody actively tries, and as a young person its not like they "have to try" then they can acquire more than 1 language and master it.

You will often here people either here (or in the States for me) say that they must learn their native language first then move on, but it just shows their ignorance in that matter.

Naw. Xenophobia is a lot worse than stereotyping.

CB, you OK? Maybe you need to get out of the city. Time for a trip down to Shikoku or up to Hak?

A mate of mine were actually thinking of doing the Yoshino river again mate...but seems he may not have the time. Bummah! Fine thanks smile Been a great summer! Too bad its winding down, but thats always a great thing as Ill be skiing in less than 4 months!! WOOOOT! clap

Another fantastic example. WTF? Is it really that hard to understand 24 clocks? Can Japanese seriously be that dumb? Please god I hope not. Surely they arent. Well, maybe they are...

Its now am 8:54. Why do they insist on using English words but in Japanese usage? If you cant use it right in the first place, then dont bother using it at all. I mean, its not like we are talking difficult grammar here, but Japanese and English are often hopeless.

Tex, you ever seen a deer staring at your high beams at night and they dont move? Thats how many Japanese are. They're muppets. They cant think for themselves and have this preconceived notion that Japanese is so difficult for gaijin to learn that its impossible for anybody else to learn it. Part of their "Nihonjinron" rolleyes rolleyes Hence when they see a foreigner, and its not everybody but its enough, then panic mode sets in and they dont know how to react, and everything coming outta our mouths obviously has to be unintelligible rubbish. So, they just freeze up.

Oh, another thing. The whole - "Gaijin da, gaijin da...kowai" thing. Ya know, I get it if its a little kid. Not that happy about it, but yeah, theyre kids, its understandable to some extent. But, when facking adults do it it gives me the shits. I refuse to believe this country cant be called international when adults walk around saying things like that. Xenophobia might be strong, but ignorance and understanding of anything "international" are out the door. I just dont get it. How can adults be that facking stupid?
  9. Ive noticed that Japanese really do avoid sitting next to gaijin on trains. People will squeeze in somewhere else, or walk to the far end of the car, but not next to me or others.

Japanese dont watch where they go - I was out with a friend and had 6 different people walk right into me because they werent looking where they were going. My friend kept laughing but I just find it irritating doh

Noise pollution in this country has been getting to me this summer. You have to head out into the inaka to actually get some peace and quiet. Megaphones, loudspeakers, music being blasted out from every shop on the street, people yelling...its hard to enjoy walking around cities with all that noise. Noise canceling headphones dont always work either. Japanese sure love noise dont they?

I havent had this one for a while, but went into a restaurant and the waitress who was going to sit us looked at me in bewilderment as I spoke to her. She kept looking at my lady friend for help because obviously I cant speak the language rolleyes

  10. Id get something between 90-100. Those arent that fat and I can carve on skis that are 105 and shred on them all over the mountain. At first it will feel different because you have to get that much more over on the ski edge, but its nothing that a few runs wont take care of. A 95ish waist like the Mantra (96), Chronic (92), if you want something thinner Prophet (90), would all be really nice.

Any other suggestions for good local hills? Also any tips on buying season passes, or the most economical way of seeing a number of different resorts over the winter?

I had my best powder day up at Kamui last winter. The snow is so dry its not even funny. It actually makes most other mountains feel heavy (in comparison), but the mountain is small, the vert is lacking, so I dont know about going there all the time. I would definitely have a look at Furano if you are looking at something bigger and more vert, or Asahidake and Tokachidake for some BC.

Still Id imagine the season pass at Kamui is cheap, because the day passes were about 3000? I believe so not bad for a local haunt for sure!
  12. I would love to see off sides abolished in soccer. I think it needs to be a higher scoring game and it would have more action/suspense, too. Agreed with Nagoids comment about anybody faking an injury trying to get a call should get a (yellow/red) card for sure.

    baseball:

It should be abolished 100% as well. Its as interesting as getting a root canal.

    American Football:

First off it needs a name change. To what, who cares, but football just doesnt suit it.

Next, in between plays the time should be decreased. I hate waiting for the next play, and that is one aspect that makes football, rugby, aussie rules 100% more interesting - the flow of the game doesnt stop as much.

    **For any and all sports**

Fighting should be allowed. If players fight there should only be a 2 minute penalty where evicted player is out. Gotta love ice hockey for that.

Golf should be more like football, and Robin Williams said it best," HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE!!"

All women's sports should be played nude - just think, then people might actually watch them play wink
