Yes, we are very particular about that point.... it's another of those 'what we are' things that we are very keen to keep to.

Each has it's own character/style and they generally do a great job and we hope that we don't get on their nerves too much with our requests and comments!

 

You know, from time to time we have actually had ski resorts/companies complain to us directly for things like saying it's raining when it is raining. Or saying that snow conditions are bad when snow conditions are bad. They actually asked us to lie or omit posting unfavourable info like that, 'for the sake of the industry'. Sorry, but lying to your customers doesn't seem the best way to move forward and we won't, even if it costs us an advertiser or two (as it apparently has done).

Maybe for some of those people, but in reality that group of people only makes up a small percentage of the people using the Forums (and an even smaller of the site as a whole).

Many people likely do not realise that. I am quite sure that many people would enjoy reading about your experiences and it would help lots of other people thinking about visiting Japan, just like you were.

You are right. That is one reason why SJ#1 has the last couple of years been out and about talking with and advising more perhaps less well known resorts regarding getting their information out (not only on SJ but doing it themselves). You might have noticed more places popping up as Spotlights and Accommodation within this site (for example in Tohoku and recently Madarao). It is a slow process and co-operation is needed from resorts etc - and some are simply not interested - but I think you will see this opening up continuing and it can only be a good thing. We dont' set out to (and don't want to) be a place introducing just a couple of popula places - the idea is everything.

It is always very good to hear positive things like this and makes a change from (and almost makes it worth putting up with!) some of the nasty comments, sniping, feigned outrage and politics that sadly sometimes goes on in the background with a small number of particularly vociferous people. That's why this site was made in the first place all those years back by SJ#1 and it is still the underlying hope that we have for it and we do what we can to protect that. If you looked at the 6 day forecast on SJG then I suspect that there is a software bug somewhere. The last day on a couple of the forecasts I have looked yesterday and today look v. low and are significantly different from the Japan Meterological Office forecasts.

Maybe a mod could look into it.

We do not have direct control over the data that is displayed and there does not seem to be any programming 'bug' there.

I don't know all the ins and outs of this, but personally I would say just use that information to give you a general idea that it is going to be extremely cold.
And if you 'hate it' then just ignore it.

panhead pete - if some of the listings on our site don't get back to you, we'd actually like to know about it so that we can ask them why. You would think they would reply! If there are any that don't reply after a number of days, please do let us know if you can.

 

Some of the listings on there are done via travel agents (usually because they find it difficult to deal directly in English) if you look at the contact information.

 

Of course, using our site to contact places goes some way to helping support us, so thank you for people doing it that way rather than going elsewhere.

[Maiko - first day out... at last!]

Yes Rob. It is probably about the same distance from Yuzawa station as Mitsumata is (if not nearer) but in the other direction.

 

Maiko is a 10 minute (in ideal conditions) bus/taxi trip from the main Echigo Yuzawa Station. There are shuttle buses going there from the station.

 

If you are driving, it is really easy. Get off the Kanetsu Expressway at the Shiozawa Ishiuchi IC (which is 5 minutes further on than the Yuzawa IC) and the resort car parks are literally 2 minutes from there.
