About the updating of our ski area information [2023-2024 season]
Every year we manually check and update the information about Japanese ski areas published on SnowJapan.
The process of updating information for the upcoming 2023-2024 season has already started. It's complicated and time-consuming, and we are updating information every day.
Below, we will try to explain the process and what to expect:
- We are as careful and thorough as possible as we check and update information.
- Our intention is to bring you correct, reliable, and up-to-date information.
- It is a manual process.
- We only use original and reliable Japanese sources to check information.
- Our updates for each ski area (about 500 of them) are often done in stages as information becomes available and we become aware of it. For example, planned opening dates are often announced first, then lift ticket prices. Then other details follow at a later date.
- We go back to update each ski area multiple times as we check information.
- As such, updates may seem somewhat random, and some information from the previous season will temporarily remain on a page.
- So, to be clear, updates do not appear automatically and/or simultaneously. It is an ongoing and gradual process.
- We try to update information for larger, more well-known and popular ski areas as early as possible. However, that is not always possible since we rely on official information sources.
- In our experience over many years, the majority of Japanese ski areas do not update their websites until November. Some even wait until December. (Crazy, right?!)
- So, you can expect the most updates to appear on SnowJapan in November and early December.
As always, and as long-time followers of SnowJapan will know, we are not here to bring you marketing messaging or promotional press releases. No-one tells us what to do and we'll always do what we feel is right.
Please read this for more information on 'planned opening dates'.
Our daily weather/snow reporting will start appearing later in November.

Ski area news for 2023-2024
It's already August and very hot here in Japan, but news about the upcoming 2023-2024 winter season is starting to appear.
News usually starts coming faster once we get into September and the autumn months.
(Our annual information updates also start in earnest later this month, more news on that later).
We will be reporting on news in the following thread:

Gokase Highland closed for 2023-2024 season (due to nearby typhoon damage)
Gokase Highland(五ヶ瀬ハイランドスキー場)in Gokase (Miyazaki) will not be opening for the 2023-2024 season.
The ski area was closed last season (2022-2023) due to a powerful typhoon causing damage to the access road. Unfortunately, the road has not been fixed sufficiently, and it has been announced that the ski area will not be opening for the 2023-2024 winter season.
Gokase Highland is the most southerly ski area in Japan.
We wish them well and hope to see them back next year.

Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort is planning to open on 21st October 2023
New snow-making machines installed
Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort in Nagano Prefecture plans to make headlines this year by opening as soon as 21st October.
The early opening date comes thanks to 4 newly-installed French-made (MND SNOW) artificial snow-making machines, apparently the first of their kind in Japan.
The run that plans to open is the 450m Family Course in the central Taro area of the resort.
They plan to start 'making snow' from sometime in mid-September (next month!)
More information on the link below coming soon.
