Not a party town but lots of good cafes and onsen - I guess it's an age thing I will, of course, be taking some cheesy photos at Hakkoda et al!
  2. I been here 5 weeks so far, with about another 4 to go before I head back to Kanto via Niseko, Rusutsu, Hakkoda, and as many resorts as I can get to in Niigata-ken and Nagano-ken before I reach my credit card limit!!
  3. Some good points there GN! Obviously Furano (where I'm based) is some way behind Niseko in terms of development and attitudes but then it is more famous for lavender than snow!

  6. Ok, it's time for a rant! I'm guessing that one of the main reasons that foreigners ski or ride in Japan is the quality of the deep, fluffy powder. That's certainly one of the reasons I chose to live and work here. & by the same token, if that powder happens to be out-of-bounds or at least the other side of the ropes, then I'm also guessing that many of us will want to lay down those first tracks. We're all adults (I think) and know the risks of going off-piste, whether it be injury or loss of your pass. So what's the point of this post? Well it never ceases to amaze me how many
  7. I'll be interested to see how this unfolds as I'm planning something remarkably similar in mid-March, on my way back from Furano!!
  8. Yeah plus they're affected by different weather systems, etc, etc
  9. That's a good (and spot on) review Ippy! Had a very similar experience there the Sunday before last, though without the blue skies! Shame you didn't get to enjoy Furano more though.
  10. Yes, yes and yes! The back 2 are part of the Galleria Tower Suite Hotel which is the luxury option. The lego ones are part of The Tower Hotel which I guess is for the masses. Here's another photo from Sunday with the Galleria towers in the foreground and the lego towers behind and to the right.
  11. I've just had a look through the photos I took when I went there a week ago but they are mostly of my camembert for Cheeseman's post

Back to Furano, it should be good up there tomorrow if the wind dies down

  14. 5,800Y includes the lift ticket! It's a different place on a powder day but then isn't everywhere
  15. 7am in Furano and its snowing. Looks a bit windy though so may have to layer up.

  17. Hey Ippy, how's the melon? Couldn't wait for you to go to Tomamu so went there myself today - review and piccies on separate post.
  18. Ok, I've just been to Tomamu for the day so here are my thoughts and a few piccies. I should say that the only other Hokkaido resorts I've been to and can therefore compare it against are Furano (currently on my 2nd season) and Kamui (went there for the 2nd time a week ago). & apologies for the poor quality of my camera phone photos! So, in a nutshell, I like it!! Even though there was no fresh snow and it was crusty off-piste and between the trees, it's a good resort and you can see it would be brilliant on a powder day. The trees are much better spaced than Furano (not difficu

  20. Nice-looking fondue, though those fried rings (onions or squid?) look good too! Took my Camembert to Tomamu today......... Looking down on Tomamu Tree run in the so-called "Powder Heaven" though it was a bit crusty today Chasing shadows! The Twin Towers from the car park
