By train and public transport

Akakura Onsen is less than 5km from Myoko Kogen Station which is on the Kita Shinano Line and Myoko Haneuma Line local train lines. Both of these train lines begin/end at Myoko Kogen Station.


A free shuttle bus service is available from Myoko Kogen Station to Kumado. The journey takes about 20 minutes.


The bus leaves the station at 9:10am and 10:45am and advanced reservations are required.

By road

  • 5km from the Myoko Kogen IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway

  • 11.4km from the Shinano-machi IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway

The most convenient exits of the Joshinetsu Expressway for getting to Akakura Onsen are Myoko Kogen IC when approaching from the south and Nakago IC exit when approaching from the north.


From the Myoko Kogen IC exit, turn left at the traffic lights onto Route 18 and head north for about 1.3km. Turn left onto Prefecture Road 39 which is signposted as Akakura Spa and follow the signs past Akakura Kanko Resort into Akakura Onsen. The first ski lifts of Akakura Onsen are on the left side of this road before you enter the main village area.


From the Nakago IC exit, turn right onto Route 18 and head south for just over 9km until reaching the Tagiri traffic lights with a turn off to the right signposted as Akakura and Shin Akakura. At these traffic lights turn right and follow the road up to another junction. Turn right to head into Akakura Onsen.


There are a number of car parking areas around the base areas of Akakura Onsen with free parking for 1,300 cars. There are also 300 spaces on car park P2 which is charged for people not staying overnight.


A free shuttle bus connects the Akakura parking areas with the parking at the Kumado area of the ski area.
