Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 732cm Posted on Friday 26th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow is forecast for later in the day, but right now it's sunny and nice out there. We got an extra 10cm or so through the day yesterday, so white cars and blue skies to start Friday. Some really nice conditions reported yesterday, especially in the side/backcountry. Nice to see people enjoying some genuine powder. It's also a cold cold morning, following that clear sky overnight. I have to run early this morning, so all old reports are marked with an *. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 793cm Posted on Tuesday 1st March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A great start to March, with 60cm of snow on the ground (hard to tell, really, as there was a lot of wind involved through the night). Sorry not to post earlier, but the snow also meant I got called out to play with the heavy metal (I love little bulldozers), especially since I still need to change a fan belt on the snow thrower - which is really more convenient, but it's nice to sit and work in a warm cab). The snow continues to fall, and it's nice and cold. Really feels like winter in Myoko. Late though it may be, it's still welcome. Time to enjoy it, because once again we'll see the freezing line rise up on the weekend to 2000 meters or more. We keep seeing this in the 2016 season, and I hope we won't in 2017. The word from the mountain is good, light snow up high. With all that wind - we had cornices and windloading around the house - be careful on lee slopes up there. If you don't know what I mean, time to do a little study before you go out! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 805cm Posted on Thursday 10th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not much snow overnight - I'll be generous and say we had 2cm - but it has started up again in the last few minutes. I notice that some of the ski areas are showing +10cm or so, so perhaps there was more snow higher up during the day. It was coming down pretty hard during the Yama no Kami (mountain god) ceremony yesterday mid-slope at Akakura Kanko. Maybe a good sign for the rest of the season... at least, as all the local dignitaries there said, it wasn't raining. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 872cm Posted on Friday 25th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nature has a way of surprising us, doesn't it? I had to leave early yesterday, didn't think much would happen (so neglecting the report for one day is OK, right?) and then it decides to snow. And snow. And it's still snowing! I got a report from a friend high up on the mountain: 60 to 70cm of light powder up there. This could be the best snowfall of the year. After most people have left, and we thought it was time to get the canoe out. He did add that it's pretty sluffy, too, lower down in the backcountry, so be a little careful (don't go alone, have all your safety gear). Should be great on the groomers, too, even if it is a little bit heavy. The wind has picked up a bit as well; there's a pretty strong north wind blowing offshore and up over the mountains (and therefore snow). I guess we should enjoy this while we can; the freeze level will be heading back up to around 2,000 meters, and rain is back on the forecast around Wednesday. Happy to say it, but the snowpack reports are in the positive. Akakura Kanko: -4° / 180cm; all lifts running until the 27th, then Sky Cable, No. 2 and 3 lifts Akakura Onsen: -2° / 150cm; nighters over for the season Ikenotaira Onsen: -3° / 70cm Myoko Suginohara: -7° (top) / 95cm; Gondola and No. 2 lifts only Seki Onsen: -3° / 250cm; top lift won't be running due to heavy snow! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 814cm Posted on Monday 14th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Woke up to some fresh, if very wet, snow. It's still coming down, light but steady, although it's piling up as slush rather than snow at our location here (about 670 meters, just below Akakan). We have about 5cm on the ground, which looks about the same up on the hill (Akakan and Suginohara both added another 5cm to their snowpack figures today, too). We could be getting more light snow through the week, until that freezing line does start heading up again. At least there might be some sun before the possibility of rain on the weekend. At this point, it might as well be sunny and pleasant, since we most likely aren't going to see any major snowfall again this season. It's getting pretty foggy at the moment, too, but at least snow is involved. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Things are a bit nicer today than yesterday; there is still some fog (which looks to be clearing), and a light dusting of new snow, instead of the rain. It's still snowing very lightly, and there's the chance that it might clear later in the day. Not such a bad way to end a three-day weekend. The reports are barely in, but I need to get out this morning! Sunny, not too hot, white trees up on the hill.... could be a lot worse! We might get some more, especially tomorrow, but that's going to be it for a while. It's still wet (this is the end of the snowfall season, of course)... but it's more snow. Always good. I have nothing more to add to that. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . An early report today, because there's a race up on the hill and I will be sitting by a gate making sure everything is OK... The snow tapered off yesterday soon after the report was up, so we only got about five more centimeters of snow. Not bad, of course, since we got some positive figures added to the snowpack reports. Today it's sunny, with some clouds out over the ocean that might bring some snow showers later. Looks like a really nice day for a ski (or for sitting on race course). There was 25cm of snow waiting outside of my door this morning, more in places. Nice and cold, currently around -3C, we are back into winter mode. Light snow is falling at the moment and snowy conditions should continue through the day and hopefully most days in the coming week. How much falls, well we'll just have to report that as it happens. Here's what the resorts are reporting this morning. Niseko Grand Hirafu - 50cm at base, 90cm up top (-6C at 9:30am) Niseko Annupuri - 40cm at base, 50cm up top (-7C as of 9:30am) Niseko Village - 20cm at base, 35cm up top I don't have the lowdown on lifts that will be open tomorrow at Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri, but will update this report later today if that information becomes available. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here So we are now into December and the second day of the season here. To recap, looking at our reports (the info can always be found on the bottom of the report pages), we observed 123cm of snowfall during the month of November. That's here in the base Hirafu area. As those who have followed our Niseko Now reports before will know, we also keep an eye on the official snowfall statistics coming from Kutchan town, and for November 2013 they had reported 99cm. It's expected that the base area will get more than the Kutchan reading, and of course that there will be more up on the slopes too. Anyway, it was great to get out there yesterday. There's still some sasa still poking through on the runs. Some of the usual characters turned up for opening and there was a bit of a party feel going on, with limited operations not dampening spirits. I'm seeing 5cm of snow since my last report this morning. Snow depth numbers at the resorts don't seem to have changed apart from 10cm being added to the upper slopes at Annupuri, and I am this morning hearing of 10cm or so fresh. It's just cloudy at the moment and no wind. All calm. From today Niseko Grand Hirafu are operating the Ace Family lift as well as the two lifts they had open yesterday. As planned the Community Chair and Banzai Chair lifts at Niseko Village are moving this morning. And Niseko Annupuri are also opening the Gondola at 10am this morning and the Jumbo Number 3 lift at 10:15am. Still very limited operations, but good to see more open up. Another look at the forecast and a few sprinklings aside it's looking quite dry up through the end of the coming week. We'll keep an eye on that.
