Ah, the November gloom and cold rain is here, reminding us that the preparations for the snowy season—like tying up the trees, slapping on the snow tires and getting the monster snowthrower ready - better get done soon! There's always the chance for a sudden heavy November snow that breaks down trees before melting (don't get too excited; it doesn't stay long). Things are pretty much the same in our fair town: we are certainly on the world map now (take a look at the cover of the September issue of Powder magazine, shot up above the Akakura Kanko Resort). Hard to believe it, as sleepy as the town is right now. Things change, of course, but this is a pretty tight little town so the good things pretty much stay the same. OK, a little old and a bit tatty in the summer, but that's better than glass and steel planned resort style, right? And the main news of the day: the official word on the likewise official openings just came out today, so we can start looking toward the season of snow and fun with some knowledge in hand. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just a quick note here as November is coming to a close, and the weather is definitely looking more wintery this morning. It's been fairly mild and sunny the past few days; this morning the flags on top of my new bamboo wands (four-meter-long wands, set out so I don't crash into stuff once the heavy snow falls) all began to swing around from the south to the north. Now the wind is really whipping them around, with generous lashings of rain and fog. Glad the preparations are ready, apart from those snow tires (missed the reservation at the local service station...). It's one of those typically nasty November days before things get nice and white and clean (if not much more sunny—if you want bluebird skies, mid-winter Myoko might not be your place). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I was kind of bummed last night when we were getting precipitation, but not of the white kind. The good news came later when we started to hear thunder—always a good sign up here that things may head to snow. And, sure enough, we start the morning with perhaps 20cm of fresh. And it continues to snow. Pretty strong wind right now, but it's actually come down a lot from the shaking the house had during the night. Apparently there were really big winds all day off the coast here; the Coast Guard website currently shows 18 meter/second NNW winds all across this part of the Japan Sea. Which is also good news for us on the other side of the front range mountains. The only bad thing this morning is the incomplete news that I have for you. I complain a lot about this, I know, and I'll stop (once things are in full operation, it's pretty easy to keep up on things). The town report didn't come out until 11am yesterday (which is not the decision time for most skiers) and the areas were pretty bad about sending out stuff to the town, or posting on their own sites. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a beautiful day in Myoko today (although, of course, we'd rather see more pounding snow!). Looks like more snow after this bluebird morning. I waited a bit today so we could get a real, official report up, as the lifts just keep on opening and the news doesn't get out very early. Looking good, though, with more and more choices of where to go. Still way too low for offpiste explorations, though; streams aren't filled in, and there's a lot of vines and small trees out there to tie up your skis or boards. Be patient; it will get better (and safer). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happy New Year! And happy new snow (sounds like a Japanese ad campaign: "Oh fresh my new snow!" Written with love....) About 30cm new at the base of Akakan today. It's dark over Mt. Myoko still today, but sunny to the south and east - and, as I'm going snowshoeing for a first visit to the shrine at Togakushi, perfect weather. Still looks like snow in the Mt, Myoko area and to the north, which would be welcome. It's looking more like normal, but we can still use more snow. Not all resorts have reported in yet, but we can't wait! Gotta get out there! (And sorry - I see that Akakan accidently wrote 190cm yesterday, which did seem odd. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nice snowfall through the day yesterday, all the way down to the ocean. We probably got 30cm or so at the base of Akakan, and it really looks nice to see things in white again. This also gives the ski areas a little breathing room, as things were getting pretty thin on the hills. More snow is forecast for the rest of the day and on in through the weekend. Sorry to see the heavy snow previously forecast for the weekend being revised to moderate snow or snow showers, but let's just wait and see. These things do change a lot up in the mountains, right? And we're a lot more optimistic after this last snow. It's an early morning today, so the report goes out with only two resorts having submitted their info for the day (thank you, Ikenotaira and Akakura Onsen!). A little bit of good news: maybe three cm of fresh snow this morning (the less good is that things seem pretty bright out there, with sun likely). But things are looking a little better over the coming days and into the weekend, with snow on the forecast pretty much every day, even if not all heavy. And it's a bit colder, too. We're not going to dwell on it, but look ahead! It can only get better at this point. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Finally: a Myoko-style snowfall, with reduced visibility, and covered-up car windows. It's not much yet, really, by local standards, but man it looks good. I'm not even going to write that much; I wanted to get the report out, so you (and maybe me) can get out into that good soft snow! More snow is forecast for the coming days, even perhaps some heavy stuff over the weekend, so things are looking better. Doesn't have to be a record snow year to have some good skiing (just nice to not be bouncing off grass and rocks). Probably 15cm now, and counting. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun is gone, the clouds are back, and so is more of the very pretty, but very light, snow. The good news is that snow is forecast almost continuously for the next week, with the possibility of heavier fall around Monday (although I also see possible rain just before that). Offshore the wind has shifted to come in from the north; that's usually good news on the snow front as well. It's pretty strong out there on the water, but really quiet here at the base of the mountain. Really happy to see all the resorts have fresh news in today; maybe not having a lot of good news has held them back from reporting (and, to be honest, only the temperatures are changing - let's call the snow depths a "general advisory"). And one more good thing; in the few minutes I've been writing the snowfall has picked up a lot. Still not the level we could normally expect, but still snow, still falling, and looks like we could get some new accumulation. We may not have typical, massive snow in Myoko this year, but I think we're ahead of the pack: the parking lot at Akakura Kanko Ski Area was completely full by 9:30 yesterday, with lots of out-of-town license plates on the cars. Today though I doubt it will be that crowded, as we're socked out in a heavy fog with a pretty heavy north wind. Too bad, really, as there is some new snow out there to make things a little more soft and enjoyable. I will end on that positive note, because I know a lot of people are going to look out and see the gray and be less enthusiastic (but, remember, you can't ski on blue skies!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . That most welcome, wonderful, beautiful snow tapered off yesterday, but then started up again during the night. The result was another 10-20 cm on the ground this morning. Yeah! It's looking more and more like the Myoko we know and love - although do note that it is still really low out in the backcountry! Watch for them bushes and grape vines, OK? Still snowing, albeit lightly, and it looks likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Didn't think I'd be able to write that this year.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some nice light snow overnight. Once again, not a huge, Myoko-typical dump, but still a welcome addition to a slowly but steadily increasing snowpack. It's still a little light for getting out into the backcountry, but the bush is slowly disappearing. Just remember that you probably won't be doing massive powder turns anytime soon, but it is nice out there.
