We're avoiding rain early on but there's a chance it will be raining later and rain is forecast for tomorrow along with possibly even warmer conditions. It's unclear really what is going to happen with the rain as different forecasts are saying different things. Let's just hope there's less of it. We're back to snow this morning. Just a few cm so far, but there's a good chance of build-up during the day today, so look forward to reporting on that tomorrow morning. The snow is really coming down now as I write this actually, so looking good. Tomorrow and maybe Friday too we'll probably have fine clear and sunny skies above us once again so if we can get a decent amount of snow in today, tomorrow should be great timing to be here. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Just a bit of snowfall since my report yesterday as it eased off and no snowfall overnight. And this morning we have blue skies above Madarao with just a bit of cloud hanging on here and there. More of the mountain is open with more lifts operating (see below) both at Madarao and Tangram. Still not fully open, but on the way. That should be helped along by some more fresh snowfall due tonight and hopefully into tomorrow morning with the next snow after that on New Years Eve. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Welcome to winter. It actually feels like winter this morning. And we haven't been able to say that much so far this December. 26cm of snow to report, with the resort reporting 30cm on the slopes. Sounds good? Looks good. And I bet it feels good under skis and boards too! Madarao this morning is open with the Number 1, Number 2 quad lift and Number 5 lifts operating along with 5 courses. It looks like Tangram Ski Circus is also opening from this morning with the Number 1 pair lift planned to be operating. It may be limited still but it is a start and with snow forecast to continue for today and then pick up again later on tomorrow night (after a lull in the daytime tomorrow?), there's more to come and hopefully soon more of the resort areas opening. Visibility is also very limited out there this morning so take care. And have fun! The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . What a beautiful morning it is. I'm always in awe of the 360 degree scenery from up here when it's like this in particular so really looking forward to getting one of the first lifts up this morning. There was just a bit more snow since the report yesterday before the clouds cleared up and clear up they have. It's blue skies all around. It's also a cold morning with the resort reporting -9 degrees! Not much warmer here where I am either just a bit lower than base. Snowfall is still expected to be with us tomorrow and perhaps heavy snow as well at times especially towards tomorrow night. Later in the week and Saturday it looks like there's a worrying rise in temperatures and rain expected even on the mountain. If that's the case, the time to be here is today and tomorrow (if you like riding in the snow) and Wednesday if you like it once the snow clouds have cleared! Madarao Kogen is reporting 10-15cm of snowfall on the mountain and I can see 10+cm of snow on my car outside, waiting to be brushed off. I think I'll leave it and put my board boots on instead, the snow looks too good to spend time moving it around! Yes, it should be a good morning out there and if we get continued snowfall even better. Not actually forecast to continue until the end of today and sun is forecast for tomorrow. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao and this morning there's a mix of white/grey cloud and blue sky over the mountain. Which was is it going to go? I know which way we all want it to go (heavy snowfall) but let's take a look at the forecast, for what it is worth! We're still down for decent snowfall later on today and tonight (and then again around Tuesday), so things look quite promising. Fireworks after 'nighta' tonight at Madarao Kogen - unless it's blizzard conditions that prevent it. Let's hanabi! Should be a lot of folk around this weekend, hope you have a good one. Like I said, just how we like it - there's been too few of those this season. Let's have some more. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a cloudy morning here in Hirafu with just a sprinkling of snow since yesterday. I've put 1cm on the report, but there's a bit of 'rounding up' going on there! Hovering around 1 degrees now Niseko Grand Hirafu now has the Family Course, Center Course and Shirakaba Course officially open. Still no access down to the base of the skijo due to the lack of snow - so you come down using the Ace Center Four. It's a similarly story of limited conditions over at Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri as we wait for more snowfall. At Annupuri just the 600m Utopia course is open, coming down via the Gondola, while at Niseko Village there are 4 courses open - Final Fling, Shakey Knees, Banzai and Next Stage. I wish I could bring you news of huge dumps of snow lined up over the next few days, but unfortunately I can't. More sun than snow by the looks. Saturday is looking interesting with the potential of decent snowfall later on into Sunday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Best day of the early season so far yesterday with more terrain open and that fresh coating of snow to enjoy, with it snowing for most of the day in the end. Nice conditions to be found up top as well. And I have another 10-15cm of snowfall to report since yesterday as well as further openings including the Gondola at Niseko Village - which actually started yesterday, but I didn't have that information in time for the report. Grand Hirafu also now have a 'Mini Park' open on the lower slopes of the Shirakaba course. The mountain is still 100% fully open, but it's getting more like it now. Snow is still coming down with poor visibility on the mountain. But I'm sure most of you will agree, that's good! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's Friday morning and I have good news - snowfall to report! Yes, it's back to snow. Actually, it was back to the snow during the day yesterday... It's not knee deep alas, but 10cm or so here in the village area and as you can see below from the Avalanche Report today 20cm being reported from the mountain there. Yey, as they say. We are told not to expect much snow today - if any, the light snow seems to have eased off now and there's more and more blue sky appearing now - but snow is forecast for the over the weekend and into early next week. Some forecasts say it'll be tomorrow and some say Sunday. It is currently -6 degrees here in Hirafu and while it should get very cold overnight tonight, tomorrow is expected to be somewhat milder than today with highs closing in on freezing point. Especially if we end up with the sun that some forecasts tell us might happen. So kind of a mixed outlook really and difficult to read. I'll tell you exactly what is happening tomorrow morning... tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I must get out and enjoy that new fresh layer we have. Looks like lots of people have the same idea! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -8C, 20cm in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -12C, Wind NW12m/s, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -15C, wind NW15m/s, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: -11C, light winds, 10cm new snow. Annupuri peak 1308m: -16.2C, wind WNW7.8m/s. Cape Benkei: NW15m/s, Cape Kamui: WSW10m/s, wave 1.4m, pressure 1026hPa. A high pressure system is bringing strong westerly winds into the area, this has caused movement of snow and snowdrift development on leeward slopes . On steep slopes and knolls above 1000m the avalanche risk is higher. The snow in forest although not deep, is reset and should be good. Snow flurries and gusting winds are expected to continue today. Avoid riding steep slopes(>40deg) above 1000m as there is possibility of up to 50cm fracture and avalanche to occur. Opening of peak gates yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decision. Newly formed snowdrifts are very weak and prone to collapse easily, causing surface avalanches. In the Niseko area, once winds reach 18m/s the avalanche risk rises dramatically. Accidents can be avoided by recognising the changing conditions and taking appropriate actions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I'm pleased to be able to report 5cm of fresh snow this morning. Even with the chance of there being a bit more than that higher up (though not at 1150m according to the Avalanche Report this morning), it's not enough to refresh the mountain after the run of days we have had without any new snow - but it's definitely better than 0cm! We have clear blue skies over the Niseko region, the sun is out, it's calm and it's keeping cold. Actually I am seeing that it apparently dipped down to minus 16 degrees overnight in Kutchan. Currently it is around -11 degrees. There's not much else for me to report this morning. Weekly forecast is still not looking like there's any major snow on the into next week. We might have to make do with smaller top-ups like the overnight one we got. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -10C, 5cm new snow crystals in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -13C, 5cm new snow, light winds. Annupuri 1150m: -12C, wind W7m/s, 5cm new snow. Annupuri peak 1308m: -14.2, SW0.3m/s Cape Benkei: SW3m/s, Cape Kamui: SW9m/s, wave 1.2m, pressure 1027hPa. Isobars are spaced widely apart over Niseko and high pressure system is bringing calm weather at the sea and mountains. 5cm of light snow crystals fell overnight.
