The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning to everyone reading and a very Happy New Year. We are starting the new year with some nice new snowfall to enjoy. Around 10-15cm in base areas, and up to 20-30cm in some higher areas, conditions should be pretty good this morning higher up. The clouds have started clearing and there's quite a bit of blue sky to be seen now. Still a lot of cloud around but we can expect increasingly clear skies as the day goes on. Hakuba 47 are declaring themselves fully open this morning but other areas aren't able to say that yet with lower areas in particular still struggling. Temperatures are going to be rising a bit over the weekend with the freezing level going up to over 1500m and highs of around 6 degrees in the village. We might get some rain but hopefully temps will dip again by the evening and if anything is falling - we hope - it will be snow. There's not a whole lot lined up on the forecast though and we might need to wait until around Tuesday for the colder conditions to return. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Snow was falling yesterday and really coming down up on the slopes in some area - at least at times. I'm not usually into white-out situations myself, but it was great to experience them up at 47 yesterday afternoon. It apparently eased off up there later in the day with not much more overnight. So what was the haul? Let's see what the resorts are officially reporting, this is the information as available (which is unfortunately sometimes reported in a 'less than clear' and consistent fashion): Hakuba 47 - 15cm on upper slopes during the day, an additional 10-15cm overnight and 1cm at base overnight. Hakuba Goryu - 10cm on upper slopes and 5cm on lower slopes Happo-one - 20cm yesterday, reporting 5cm more this morning Hakuba Cortina - 20-30cm of fresh snowfall So generally it looks like there'll be a decent fresh layer up there this morning from yesterday. No doubt if you are actually in Hakuba at the moment you'll already be up there by the time this gets posted. (Hope you have a good morning). It is fantastic to see fresh snow of course and be able to play in some fresh. And something of a relief as well, though of course we really need much more as it is not enough to transform the (mostly) limited opening status of resorts. The main change I can notice this morning is that Hakuba Cortina have their Number 1, 5 and 6 lifts moving once again along with a few more courses opening. What we need is that regular, consistent, prolonged, full-on snowstorm feel - something that has been lacking this season so far. (And I don't just mean in Hakuba but in many regions of Honshu). So with that in mind let's have a look at how the forecast is shaping up. Looking good for more snow later on today, on and off tomorrow with perhaps some sunshine mixed in there and then more snow is due on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures don't look likely to be getting too low which is perhaps a point of concern, but let's ignore that and remain cautiously very optimistic about the upcoming snowfall. :) Monday is a holiday in Japan so we are about to enter a three-day weekend. Traditionally this coming weekend is one of the most popular (read: rather busy!) weekends of the season, so do expect lots of people to be around especially with fresh snow on the menu. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I bring good news this morning - up to 30cm of fresh being reported on upper slopes. Now that's more like it! :) Just a modest 5cm or so here in the village but higher up on the mountain more snow is being reported by the resorts: Hakuba 47: 15-20cm at base, 30cm up top Hakuba Goryu: 10cm at base, 30cm up top Happo-one: 20cm Hakuba Cortina: 15cm Hakuba Iwatake: 5-10cm Now those numbers are something more like, and sure to have put smiles on faces. We want and need more of course and we should be getting more during the day today and then tomorrow and Monday as well. Head high folks! We had light snow but no real accumulation during the day yesterday - even higher up - but if obviously upped a gear overnight with the decent haul reported. Conditions should be refreshingly fresh up there this morning and just in time for the long weekend as well. As I reported yesterday evening, Happo-one have got their top Grat quad and course open from this morning and there's more of Goryu, Cortina and Tsugaike Kogen open as well. As always, I have added details below. Right now we have a mix of weather conditions going on. Low visibility higher up and somewhat clearer lower down. It even looks quite bright down here in places. Might we get to see some sunshine later on this afternoon? Even if we do, it should be snowing again by the end of the day. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a fine day weather wise. Some nice blue skies and clouds, with more of the clouds gathering later in the day. I'm happy to report some more fresh snow this morning after snowfall overnight. Resorts around the valley are reporting between a few cm at base areas and up to 13cm higher up this morning after snowfall overnight. Modest numbers for sure and we were actually hoping for more (aren't we always!), but they all count. As has been the theme for the season so far, go high for the best conditions. Sometimes recently I have been almost wary of looking at the forecast, but today I look and it shows some real promise. We are expecting snow to continue falling today and tomorrow but take a look at Monday and Tuesday on the forecast (below). 'Heavy snow' over the period of two days. Now that sounds fantastic. A few days of heavy snowfall would really make a difference. Please happen! Are we about to see the winter switch be turned on proper? Let's hoping, as they say. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After a cloudy day yesterday, it is snowing this morning folks. Don't sound surprised! Resorts are reporting up to 10-15cm on upper areas so far and it is coming down right now too - and due to continue. Could this be the start of something really good? I feel a song coming on... I'm trying to contain the excitement after some disappointments, but it is all looking like things could be improving quickly now with regular snow due today, tomorrow and also into early next week. It may not be back to what we expect early January temperature-wise, yet but it's fairly cold and going to continue that way hopefully getting back down into negative numbers. It should be good to get out and ride on some fresh snow this morning. From the webcam images just now it looks like it's snowing pretty good up there as well. :) Here's to lots of snow and what I will be able to report over the next run of days. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A few cm or so of fresh snow perhaps on the mountain during the day yesterday and there were some good conditions to be enjoyed up there. It felt something like a mid-winter day, which is what most days should feel like right now of course. A good thing! Slopes and lifts were less busy as well, certainly over at 47 where I was in the afternoon, as lots of people started making their way back home after the long weekend. It should be much quieter from today. This morning it is pretty cold here in the village with a dusting of new snow around base areas and light snow falling early. It's mostly cloudy right now with some blue sky to be seen in places and even the sun trying to break through as well. Snow remains on the forecast over the coming week - hopefully decent amounts and regular as well, obviously. The colder conditions are should stay with us as well. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After the gusty early conditions yesterday, Happo-one managed to get open from around noon which was good to hear. Clouds moved in around the mountains and it started snowing up there. And this morning there is some fresh snow on the ground. Just a bit here at village/base (2cm) but resorts are reporting 10-20cm of fresh - check the individual resort details below for news from each of the ski-jo. Let's take a look at the forecasts. Still looking promising with a bit more snow today into early tomorrow and then around Thursday and Friday. It should be keeping fairly cold as well which is good; if it keeps cold conditions should keep well. And it should be pretty decent up there this morning. I'm going to go and check! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba and again this morning resorts reporting 1-5cm of snow on their slopes. Over the last week or so we have seen a bit of snow on most days, even though the numbers have been fairly low. It felt cold up there on the slopes yesterday with a bit of a strong wind at times. Light snow was falling when I was up at Hakuba 47 and it was pretty decent. This morning there's lots of cloud around and while it was snowing earlier on, it has eased now and the sun is shining down through my window as I type this. Feels like it is going to clear up. Everyone remains very excited and expectant about the heavy snow that lies ahead according to the forecasts. It's still looking good to happen - heavy snow is due Monday through Wednesday along with some very cold temperatures. Proper mid-winter conditions. Please! A few more courses have been opening up at Hakuba Iwatake resort - at last they have part of the Village Side open, though it is still very limited. If the forecasts are right though, things will have changed considerably by the middle of the coming week. Let's just hope we don't get disappointed! Can you guess just how much I want to wipe off all of the lift operation details from this report and be able to tell you that 'everywhere is open as normal'. A lot! Snow was falling for much of the day yesterday on mountain and this morning resorts are again reporting some new cm of fresh - mostly quite similar amounts to what they were yesterday. Here in the village base areas just a few cm. With this gradual arrival of fresh snow at higher elevations in particular, resorts are gradually being able to open up a bit more as well. This morning I can see that Route 7 at Hakuba 47 is now open as well as (part of) the Merry Land course at Hakuba Goryu. A few more courses have also opened up at the Hakuba Iwatake resort. Of course we are still in need of (a lot) more snow. Could it be on the way soon? That forecast I was mentioning yesterday - it's still looking very good indeed for the first part of next week. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Resorts reporting 20-30cm on the mountain and a good layer down in the village as well. Also, strong winds are affecting Happo-one, Tsugaike and Cortina resorts this morning. It looks like Hakuba 47 and Goryu are open at the time of writing but it's best to keep an eye on that. Or perhaps have a day in the onsen and watch the snow fall while hatching cunning plans on how to enjoy it... It's great news about the snow, not so about the wind, but this is probably just what we need... hopefully the snowfall will continue falling like the forecast says it will do for the coming week. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Heavy snowfall! Just how good are those words? Music to my ears. Depending on where you are in Hakuba (and of course it is a fairly large area) - and how easily the strong winds have got to the snow and blown it about - you're going to have different stories and numbers this morning. All of the numbers are nice and big, so at last it is a very good 'problem' to have! But we can only go with what we experience first hand and here they are - up to a whopping 50cm in places around Happo village area, 30+cm close to Goryu base area, just under 40cm by Hakuba 47, and 32cm from our guy over near Cortina. As I said, it's windy down to village areas today and so that is also a factor this morning... and not only with the snowfall numbers but also the lifts (more on that later). But anyway yes, the last few days we have seen decent amounts of snow fall and today is the best of the lot. It must have been dumping good and proper while we were sleeping, so much so that I wish I had stayed up to watch. It was really coming down earlier on when I first got up, less so as I write this report though snow is forecast to continue falling for the day and probably heavily at times. Here are the 'new snowfall' numbers that resorts are posting this morning: Hakuba Goryu: 15-40cm Hakuba 47: 40-50cm Hakuba Happo-one: 20cm Hakuba Cortina: 30cm An interesting array of numbers there, but again the wind has probably got hold of a few of those. Talking about the wind, unfortunately it is affecting resort operations this morning and I have added resort specific details below. The forecast remains good for regular snowfall through the week and more heavy snowfall perhaps around Sunday. Being very excited about all this fresh snow is great, but don't forget to be careful especially in these conditions. People who normally moan about shovelling snow are this morning doing their shovelling with big smiles on their faces. (Well, the ones who aren't permanently grumpy anyway). Anyway. Once the storm moves on, I would imagine that resorts around the area will at last all be able to be operating at something like 'normal' status. I'll try not to use the words 'at last' again, honest! Resort news as of 8:50am on Wednesday 20th January 2015 (where available, all subject to change due to weather conditions) Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 is reporting 40-50cm of fresh snowfall. Currently the Line C and Line E lifts are on hold with Route 2 and 3 not open yet as they deal with the heavy snowfall. Tree Riding Zone not yet open for the season. Official snow depth: Upper: 200cm Base: 70cm Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu is reporting 15-30cm of fresh snowfall on lower areas and 40cm on upper areas. All upper and Toomi areas are now normally open but strong winds this morning have the Alps Number 1 and 3 lifts currently on hold (and so the Panorama Course closed). Most courses in the Iimori area are now open. Lift info: Wind affecting the Alps Number 1 and 3 lifts at time of writing. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba where there's another 5cm on the ground and more (quite a lot more) on the mountain. Yesterday Hakuba 47 were reporting 20cm of fresh snow up by Line C in the afternoon and this morning they're reporting 10-15cm at base so that probably gives a good general picture. I think perhaps there was less snowfall overnight than we were expecting and hoping for - resorts reporting up to 5-15cm at base and up to 20cm higher up - but still, it's a decent new layer and conditions continue to improve as the base gradually gets bigger. It was really cold yesterday and it's a cold start to the day today too. Unfortunately there are fairly strong winds again which are affecting the top lifts at Goryu/47, Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen. We're expecting the snow fall to ease this morning and perhaps the skies clear up by tonight. Another cold night is set to be followed by a good chance of clear and sunny skies tomorrow. With the fresh snow and clear weather, tomorrow should be a very fine day to be out on the mountain. Things are expected to be somewhat milder mid week before more snow - heavy snow? - due around the weekend. Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall across the mountain. All courses are now open. Line E lift on hold due to wind. The R4 Snow Park is closed for today and tomorrow as they do a 'full remake'. The lower part of the Tree Riding Zone is now open. There is no 'nighta' at Hakuba 47. Official snow depth: Upper: 200cm Base: 70cm Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu is again reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall at base and 20cm up top. All courses now officially open except Snow Diving - but, early on the top Alps lifts and Panorama and Grand Prix courses are closed due to wind conditions. The Toomi area will be open until 9:30pm tonight for 'nighta'. Lift info: All lifts apart from the top Alps pair lifts are operating as planned this morning. Official snow depth Alps: 215cm Toomi: 95cm Iimori: 95cm Hakuba Happo-one: Hakuba Happo-one is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall. The top lifts are on hold again this morning due to the weather conditions - Grat quad, Alpen quad, Usagidaira pair, Kurobishi Number 3 and Skyline Number 2 pair. All lower areas of Happo-one are now open. Once the wind dies down it should be an 'all open' situation! The lower Nakiyama area plans to be open for 'nighta' every day until 9pm.
