Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 619cm Posted on Sunday 10th May 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and to the last Hakuba Now report of 14/15 on this last day of the season for Hakuba Happo-one and Hakuba Goryu. There's a lot of cloud around the mountains this morning, though a step back and we can see some blue sky from the village and fine weather is forecast so maybe the cloud will clear up. It's been considerably cooler yesterday and overnight - has been a quite chilly start to the day today - and a real contrast to that hot run of weather we had just a short while back. No doubt temperatures will be rising again in the coming weeks. Strong winds higher up look like they might well stopp the lifts - at least at Goryu - at the start of the day, so please contact the resorts for the latest updates if you plan to get out today. Would be a shame if the weather spoilt the last day. Whatever happens weather-wise, at the end of today the last lifts at the ski resorts in the area will stop moving for the season. There's still snow up there on the mountains of course and no doubt some will be hiking up there - hopefully all with experienced friends, preparation and care. So here we are at the end of a long season. I remember before the ski lifts opened that rather strong earthquake that shook our area on 22nd November. It was not the start that everyone wanted of course. While it certainly caused serious problems for a group of people, luckily for Hakuba generally the damage was not widespread and aftershocks soon eased off. It was really great to see how the community pulled together. The season got going and December saw lots of snow falling and some really great conditions... that always asked question 'when is the best time to visit' never gets easier to answer. Lots more people visited Hakuba from all corners of the world again this last season and that trend will only continue in the coming years. And here we are now well into May. For a good look back at the season that was I recommend taking a read through the archived daily Hakuba Now reports. Remember, you can also read through archived reports from previous seasons as well. All of those are easily accessed from the links at the bottom of this page - go take a look. Once you've read through all that lot, perhaps you can try to make up your own mind on how to best answer that 'when is the best time to visit' question! If you plan on visiting Hakuba over summer - highly recommended by the way - remember that the weather forecasts that are shown on the resort pages of SnowJapan are updated throughout the year. Links to those resort pages can be found on the right side of this page. I hope that if you visited Hakuba this season you enjoyed it and if you didn't get to visit... well, I hope that you can get here next season. The Hakuba Now reports will be back updating on SnowJapan from late autumn when the 2015-2016 season is fast approaching. In the meantime, thanks for reading the reports this year, have a fine summer and I'll see you later in the year. Cheers. Cloudy skies still over Hakuba early on this morning but it is dry now and the forecast tells us that we should get to see the sun today... it just won't be quite as warm, much like yesterday. Clouds do seem to be getting less quite quickly over the last hour or so, so perhaps we can expect some good weather today fairly soon. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 10cm Posted on Saturday 28th November 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. And a very good morning it is as well, as I bring good news. As I write this report it is 9am on Saturday 28th November and it's officially going to be the first day of the season in Hakuba. Yes, thanks to that lovely snowfall of yesterday, the top course at Hakuba Goryu is opening this morning from 10am! The Alps Daira Number 1 lift is going to be moving with Hakuba 47 Line E lift joining in the fun from tomorrow. (Entry only via Hakuba Goryu). Tickets are 2500 yen. Happo-one resort is also planning to open from 12 noon with the Kokusai Number 3 lift and Panorama Pair lift due to move with the Panorama course set to open. Tickets are 2600 yen for adults and 1600 yen for children from the Gondola ticket office where the journey to the snow starts. Can't see any news from Tsugaike Kogen just yet though they did report up to 20cm of snow at their bus stop. Let's just rewind to yesterday where it was snowing down to the village from the morning, giving us generally around 10cm in many places, though it did let up by evening. It was of course great to see everything turn white and that winter feeling come flooding back. And so to today and the start of the season. It's limited of course and still want much more snowfall, but turns on natural snow are available. And there's even a bit of sunshine at the moment as well. I will do my best to keep you up-to-date each day with the latest lift movements and openings in this early season period. Things can change very quickly even within a day though at this stage of the season in particular, so if you are planning on getting out there I do highly recommend that you check the resort official websites for the latest. Just a quick look at the forecast - not a huge amount of snow over the coming week and a good chance of rain in the village, so we are going to have to keep an eye on that as well. Have fun if you are going to get out there! --- Planned resort opening dates Hakuba 47: On standby to open as soon as there is enough snow -- until 6th May Hakuba Cortina: 12th December until 3rd April Hakuba Goryu: Limited opening from 10am today -- until 8th May Hakuba Happo-one: Limited opening from noon today -- until 8th May Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field: 18th December until 27th March Hakuba Norikura Onsen: Mid December until late March Hakuba Sanosaka: Mid December until 3rd April Kashimayari: Early December until mid April Tsugaike Kogen: On standby to open as soon as there is enough snow -- until early May Hakuba Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Saturday 28th November 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 10cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 1 day Most snowfall observed in 1 day 10cm (28th November) November 2015 snowfall 10cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was a beautiful day in Hakuba yesterday. Almost borderline warm as well in the early afternoon. The mountains were looking spectacular with white topped background with the remaining colours of autumn at village level. Great stuff. See photo attached to this report. For the record, the first snow recorded falling up at the top of Goryu was on 2nd November. (All gone now for the moment). It has been changeable over the last few weeks with things being getting very cold at times. Stoeves are ready, gardens are being prepared for the winter and all of the locals are busy busy making their last minute preparations for the coming busy winter season. And it's not too far away now. Looks like we are heading for some colder conditions tomorrow with some cold rain forecast later in the day... and the chance of a bit of sleet or snow as well if we are lucky. Whether that will come down to near village level or not, we'll just have to see. The snow season is just around the corner now though with the first lifts hoping to be moving in just a few weeks time. Once we get to the later part of the month it's all a case of when they can start moving. Hakuba Now will be with you this season as well, and we'll do our best to provide you with fun and fact-filled reports every day. Gambarimasu. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Thursday 27th November 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It is a fine middle of the day here with the sun out and lots of blue sky, which is far preferable to all that rain of the last few days. Ski runs are all looking rather bare now with the snowline retreating back up the mountain. Today and tomorrow we expect highs of around 12-13 degrees here in the village... more sun tomorrow. Looks like we might get rained on again before the snow arrives, but things are looking encouraging for snow around Tuesday 2nd. Ski and snowboard resorts triple checking everything with Happo, 47, Goryu and Tsugaike ready to go as soon as there's enough snow. Hopefully that will be next week. I'm happy to report that the Prefectural Road 33 - the one that that connects Hakuba with Nagano city - is now re-open. It sounds like some more repairs are needed in the Horinouchi area, but the road is passable. I'm sure that any further fixes will be made quickly. That road the gateway to Hakuba from Nagano and so lots of people use it and it's an important one to be open. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 5cm Posted on Wednesday 3rd December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Not that much going on down at village level for the most part, coming down nicely at one point yesterday evening, but better news higher up on the mountains. Yesterday Happo was reporting 20+cm of nice quality dry fresh snowfall up around Kurobishi and Usagidaira. There's snow down by the side of roads in the village this morning as well, I would say around 5cm or so in places. Light snow in the village; heavy snow in the mountains is what Happo guys have been saying. Nice. But we want more! Resorts around the village are of course largely on stand-by and you can be sure that as soon as there's enough snow they'll be getting lifts moving. Who will be first?! With snow on the forecast right through from today until Sunday - and looking like it might be decent snowfall too at times - I think we might be seeing the first action pretty soon. Things might move fast over the next few days, but I will do my best and keep on top of the situation for you! Gambarimasu. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 25cm Posted on Friday 5th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . More snow to report this morning and I'm happy to report that today marks the official start of the season in Hakuba with Happo-one part opening from 9am this morning. The Adam Gondola lift at Happo will start moving at 9am this morning. That and the Kokusai Number 1 lift take you up to the ski-able area - which is the Panorama Course. The Kokusai Number 3 and Panorama lifts will be open (from 9:10am) up there. It's cold and poor visibility so if you are going to head out, be prepared! Snow clouds are expected to be with us at least until Sunday, so here's to all that snow we are waiting for. I have been trying to find out about any more possible openings early this morning with other resorts but haven't been able to confirm anything. With the snow continuing to fall I would definitely expect more to be happening tomorrow. Some bits of info just for now: 10cm or so of snow at base areas and counting. Happo-one are reporting 30cm of snowfall and a temperature of -5 degrees at the Usagidaira area of the resort, with heavy snow falling up there. RESORT INFO UPDATE AT 9:30AM Hakuba Goryu is open as well, and fittingly are also opening their Panorama Course up top - the Gondola gets you up there and the Alps Number 1 lift is servicing the run. Open until 4pm. They are reporting 80cm of snow. Cost is 2500 yen for adults and 1350 yen for children. Tsugaike Kogen are also open this morning with the Han-no-ki pair lift moving and the Gondola lift getting you there. They are reporting 100cm of snow on the upper slopes this morning. (Sadly, they don't also have a 'Panorama Course' to open. They should make one. ;)) As of 9am, Hakuba 47 were in the process of checking everything and planning to announce their plans this afternoon. They have even hinted at the chance of a 'full open' from tomorrow. Depending on snow conditions of course. RESORT INFO UPDATE AT 12:45PM The Hakuba 47 resort have made their announcement, and excite it is too. They are planning to be almost-all-open ('hobo zenmen') tomorrow and Sunday with it possible to ski or board from top to bottom. And presumably beyond Sunday as well! Yey.
