No wind, either - just a really good day to get out and enjoy the feeling of powder under the skis (and not a ton of people competing with you for it!). And we might continue to keep on getting snow for the next few days. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Man, can things change right after you file a report (in other words, "Mountain weather is very changeable"). It looked like things were quieting down yesterday, but then the wind, fog and snow all came back. I know some people hiking up the mountains had a quick (and wise) change of plans mid-afternoon, as visibility went down and things got pretty blustery. Today, however, spring has returned, with blue skies and a warm sun, although the actual air temperatures are still fairly cold. That will change over the coming days as the freezing line heads back up to and higher than Mt. Myoko. Maybe a little rain on Sunday, the various forecasts are saying, although down't look too heavy at this time. Lifts are starting to close, beginning with Suginohara's No. 3, the very top lift (yesterday I thought it was the wind, but today....), as well as the bottom Romance Lit No. 1—which means, don't ski all the way down the hill or you're in trouble. And they closed the lift ticket station next to the gondola, so you have to buy tickets up in the parking lot (so don't get let off at the bus stop at the bottom, or again trouble will reign). If I were a grumpy person I'd say something about customer service.... And there's still so much snow! More info below. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The SnowJapan forecast had it exactly right; the warm weather and sun (and sunburn for me) over the weekend has given way to winds, colder temperatures and snow! We could see it coming from about 5pm yesterday, as some big clouds started to form over Mt. Myoko. The winds have now moved to the west on the coast (mostly northerly around here, due to the mountains) and we probably have 5-10 cm of fresh and it's falling pretty well at the moment. You kind of feel like you don't really want any more snow at some point, but it almost felt like the first snowfall again this morning. Nice to have things white again, too... We're also entering the last week of scheduled lift operations at some of the resorts. Suginohara will open just the gondola next Monday and Tuesday, and then close. Most of the rest are open at least until early April—more to follow as they post these dates. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow let up by this morning, with the sun now shining on Myoko. We saw a few lightning flashes last night—something that can mean pretty heavy snowfall—and Akakan is reporting an additional 50cm, more than we got at base level (let's add on 20cm today, just to be conservative). Very strong winds earlier in the day; snow was really flying off the high ridges around 8 am. A little more settled now, although the wind is now coming from the east down in town, while the Coast Guard tells me it's form the northwest on the coast—signs the high pressure is moving in. Looks to be warm again in the coming days. A bit blustery yesterday, with the lifts at Akakan stopped for a while due to wind (and it was pretty rainy and nasty, but that didn't stop a lot of people from getting out there!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow kept on falling overnight here, although the total from yesterday is only about 15cm (so 10 on top of yesterday's 5 or so). Snow showers continue to fall, although we're getting occasional moments of sun as well. Nice now, but not enough to fire up the mighty snowthrower (as much repair as those things require—good to use sparingly. And it will be time to dig out the north side of the house soon enough). The mailman can deal with 15cm of snow.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not a great day before we enter the weekend; a low-pressure center moving to the north brought some strong winds earlier, and rain and gloom at the moment. But it looks like a nice weekend ahead, with high pressure moving in, bringing sun and warmer weather for Saturday and Sunday. Perhaps we'll have a repeat of last weekend, which saw a really full parking lot at Akakura Kanko and a lot of happy-looking skiers out there. Also nice to see many international families out there as well - the powder season is great, but it's nice in spring, too, as the trees start to turn green, and the first cherry blossoms are now just starting to come out at base level (you really have to look for them, but they're there, and there will be a lot more soon!). Hard to tell from their website, but it appears that Seki is closed today, but will open for the weekend. It doesn't say "closed" for the current condition, but does say "reopen" in Japanese. Ah, the November gloom and cold rain is here, reminding us that the preparations for the snowy season—like tying up the trees, slapping on the snow tires and getting the monster snowthrower ready - better get done soon! There's always the chance for a sudden heavy November snow that breaks down trees before melting (don't get too excited; it doesn't stay long). Things are pretty much the same in our fair town: we are certainly on the world map now (take a look at the cover of the September issue of Powder magazine, shot up above the Akakura Kanko Resort). Hard to believe it, as sleepy as the town is right now. Things change, of course, but this is a pretty tight little town so the good things pretty much stay the same. OK, a little old and a bit tatty in the summer, but that's better than glass and steel planned resort style, right? And the main news of the day: the official word on the likewise official openings just came out today, so we can start looking toward the season of snow and fun with some knowledge in hand. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just a quick note here as November is coming to a close, and the weather is definitely looking more wintery this morning. It's been fairly mild and sunny the past few days; this morning the flags on top of my new bamboo wands (four-meter-long wands, set out so I don't crash into stuff once the heavy snow falls) all began to swing around from the south to the north. Now the wind is really whipping them around, with generous lashings of rain and fog. Glad the preparations are ready, apart from those snow tires (missed the reservation at the local service station...). It's one of those typically nasty November days before things get nice and white and clean (if not much more sunny—if you want bluebird skies, mid-winter Myoko might not be your place). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is falling—just not enough of it quite yet. Not a lot of accumulation following the 10cm or so that we had at the end of the day yesterday; this morning it's falling very lightly, but things are also turning a bit bright out there. Myoko-san (the mountain) has just peeked out as the sky clears. The peak is beautifully white, but unfortunately there just hasn't been enough to even think about opening the ski areas (see the original plans below; now all areas are saying, "when the snow falls..."). If you're here in town early, and I know people have been coming earlier and earlier from overseas, despite warnings from locals, there's always some fishing over on Lake Nojiri, strolls around town—it does look great here in the snow, so head out to Naena Waterfall or something! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a beautiful day in Myoko today (although, of course, we'd rather see more pounding snow!). Looks like more snow after this bluebird morning. I waited a bit today so we could get a real, official report up, as the lifts just keep on opening and the news doesn't get out very early. Looking good, though, with more and more choices of where to go. Still way too low for offpiste explorations, though; streams aren't filled in, and there's a lot of vines and small trees out there to tie up your skis or boards. Be patient; it will get better (and safer). The good news came later when we started to hear thunder—always a good sign up here that things may head to snow. And, sure enough, we start the morning with perhaps 20cm of fresh. And it continues to snow. Pretty strong wind right now, but it's actually come down a lot from the shaking the house had during the night. Apparently there were really big winds all day off the coast here; the Coast Guard website currently shows 18 meter/second NNW winds all across this part of the Japan Sea. Which is also good news for us on the other side of the front range mountains. The only bad thing this morning is the incomplete news that I have for you. I complain a lot about this, I know, and I'll stop (once things are in full operation, it's pretty easy to keep up on things). The town report didn't come out until 11am yesterday (which is not the decision time for most skiers) and the areas were pretty bad about sending out stuff to the town, or posting on their own sites.
