The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We're back to sunny weather this morning in Nozawa. Looks like there's some fantastic views from the top of the mountain, some low lying cloud remaining in the valley. But generally nice clear blue skies. We will get more rain before snow, but from Tuesday/Wednesday it's looking like there's a good chance snow will be falling in the region with a sudden drop in temperatures. Something to look forward to next week and I will update you on that on Monday. Nozawa Onsen now hopes to open on Saturday 6th December. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow just keeps on falling here. The forecast was for some sun, at least from midday, but apart from a brief moment where it got a little brighter there's no sign of things stopping at the moment. Not a lot of fresh snow since last night, but it's coming down pretty well now. Should be nice and soft on the slopes (I would be out there, except the mighty snowthrower has decided not to turn over this morning.... the old Myoko story of waiting for the repair guys). Cold today, too; the car tells me -4°, while some of the ski areas are showing even colder. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 476cm Posted on Thursday 25th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some really nice snow overnight and continuing to fall in Myoko. Big, crystally flakes; can we say it's perfectly Christmassy? (Merry Christmas, readers!) Nice stuff that's easy to shovel—and, of course, to ski on/in. Hopefully it will keep going through the day, as we can still use a bit more base, particularly for those who want to head into the backcountry. It's still pretty bushy out there, and valleys are not completely filled in yet—be careful with this light snow on a firm base. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 18th November 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Tuesday 18th November 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is slowly creeping down the hill; the fall blooms (yellow bulldozers and red snowthrowers) are now in full glory around the homes; the invitations for the endless (and ski performance dampening) year-end parties are coming in. That special time of the year is just about upon us. We’ve had a rainy summer in Myoko this year. Not as much trekking up in the hills, and so much moisture that we worried if there’d be enough water left for snowfall. Not really worried about it, to be honest; there never seems to be much correlation between summer rain and winter snow. More that the Japan Sea is staying pretty warm, which gets that moisture up in the air. Come on, Siberian winds! A lot more international travelers coming this year; a lot of hotels are pretty well booked for January. No real changes on the hill, but then why mess around with a good thing. So now it’s just time for that first big snowfall that we usually get this time of year, wet and concrete-like and tough on the trees. Then it melts and makes us wait until too often right around Christmas. And then it really starts coming down. So I’ll be back from time to time, just to keep you wishing it really was January and there is a meter of new snow on the ground. Which will happen (we hope). PS Sorry, the clouds just parted as I when to take a look at visibility. Snow down to maybe 900 meters. But I'm not going to record this yet as actual snowfall.... Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1113cm Posted on Sunday 6th April 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Your reporter is out of town on this, the last day for all the resorts except Akakan and Seki Onsen, but we've got the official word: 10cm of fresh snow. What a year... I have to say, too, it rained Friday but the snow was really fun. Not too sherbet-y, and plenty glide-y. Fun is what you make it, right, and dressed unfashionably but appropriately, it's all good. The town is no longer giving snow reports - unfortunately the webcams don't seem to be updating now either. From now until the last lifts run, we'll update this Myoko Now page from time to time with any news. Resorts remaining open from Monday 7th April Akakura Kanko: Myoko Kogen Sky Cable gondola and hotel No. 3 lift will stay open until May 6, or whenever the snow runs out. Seki Onsen: Planning to stay open until May 6th. All other resorts closed from Monday 7th April. • Myoko Now: Saturday 6th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 61cm Posted on Saturday 6th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Yesterday's forecast came true: we work up to about 60cm of fairly nice fresh snow - not as wet and heavy as is often the case early in the season. It's beautiful! It's very much welcome! So why didn't I make this report the first thing of the day? There’s this thing called a battery that goes into the mighty snowthrower (which is often a part of, and occasionally defines) these reports. Mine was getting low, but at worst a quick jump and it was OK—until the first time I really needed the machine. All I can say is, I went to the local home center, found the right serial number of the battery (just one left), and in the five minutes I was there, at least three other men picked up batteries. And a huge line at checkout with a forest of shovels and scrapers heading out. It always catches us to some degree. Still snowing, with occasional sunny patches. Hope it keeps building up, so the planned openings around the 20th will go off on schedule! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A post-earthquake note (nothing snow-related to report just yet, unfortunately). We were really close to the epicenter, it seems. Felt that way. It was a big one! As big as any I've been in here in nearly 20 years. The windows started to rattle, then things moved, and then everything seemed to go liquid—lamps were swinging, everything was banging and shaking and jumping. Not fun. We've had aftershocks throughout the day, but luckily there has been no report of any major damage in the area. I did hear that avalanches were set off in Tateyama, to the west of us and Hakuba, by the earthquake, but fortunately we don't have much snow up on the hill yet. Still not sure if there were any landslides, though. Always a concern in the tight valleys around here. Well, back to waiting! Nothing on the coming forecast, but not to worry. Yet. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 106cm Posted on Friday 12th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I have been hesitant to report since yesterday, for the rain yesterday, because were looking for a big snowfall that hasn't happened yet today. One interesting development yesterday; the town announced that in fact Myoko Suginohara Ski Area will open partially tomorrow! Just the gondola, just the weekend, 8:30 am to 3:30. Pre-season price of ¥2,500. And, Akakura Onsen Ski Area is also opening some runs for ¥2,500: Kumado No. 1, No. 4, No 5 lifts, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. They'll be open to the 19th on that schedule, and we'll see what happens after that. Kind of surprised by both, partly because Suginohara is not the quickest to open (and tends to close early), Akakura Onsen hasn't had any additional snow really since the big fall earlier this week. But, hey, the season is here! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 101cm Posted on Sunday 7th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow might have tapered off during the day yesterday, but it started up again sometime during the night. The boot test shows about 35-40cm this morning, and it's falling at a rate of 1-2 cm/hour. Which means, real snow. And it is real snow, too, nit the heavy glop that usually falls early season. The shoveling isn't a pain, it's hard to make a great snowball. The kids may not be happy about that, but for snow control and skiing, that sounds a lot better! I doubt that the ski areas would open early unless there is a lot more snow, but if there are any changes we'll let you know! Still some grass poking through around the house, but the weather report is for possible heavy snow along the Japan Sea coast in the Hokuriku area. Meaning us. National broadcaster NHK just said there might be 60cm in some mountain areas. That would start getting us set up! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . This would have been a nice, early report if it weren't for the (dramatic pause, please) nearly one meter of snow that fell overnight. Thanks to my highly sensitive testing methods - ruler on the leg up to the snow level point, discovered as the snowthrower cut through the drifts - I found 95cm of snow on the driveway. Some from yesterday was there; let's say 90cm of fresh. And it's still snowing. Looks like we're getting 2cm or more every hour. Traffic will be terrible, especially along the coast with the north wind picking up right now. But that's nothing, when it looks so great (and with skiing to do soon....)
