- Shiga Kogen Now: Thursday 21st January 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this season 267cm Posted on Thursday 21st January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Yesterday saw the heaviest snow storm of the season so far, it was really coming down and blowing around lunchtime. Definitely better to be inside than out just then if you ask me! Since my report yesterday, there has been another 32cm of snowfall round my place and no doubt more in places higher up. Light snow was falling still earlier on but there's actually a few breaks in the clouds now and the feeling is it might even clear up somewhat though forecasts do say that the snow clouds should not be too far away over the coming days. In fact, we have more heavy snow due at the weekend. Stormy conditions aside, the last few days has been excellent in terms of the snow we have seen fall. Conditions should be fantastic out there this morning, can't wait to get out myself. No doubt that almost everywhere should now be open though some resorts are taking their time in updating their information. A personal check seems to be required! Hope you can get to enjoy it. Of course remember to take good care out there and don't get carried away. Keep your head on, as they say. (Higashidateyama still have their official snow depth at 20cm! Believe me, more than that fell just during the day yesterday!) Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 215cm Posted on Tuesday 19th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . There's some sunshine this morning but it should only be a temporary break from the snow as we have heavy snowfall forecast and expected tonight and through tomorrow. Looks like it could be lots. Kind of wet snow yesterday even though we got quite a lot of it of course - not top season Shiga Kogen quality - but we'll take it. Tonight should see the lighter kind falling (though falling 'heavier' of course). We all expect! We should be finding most lifts and courses now open and with the snow due by tomorrow as well I would have thought that by the coming weekend we can finally call it as 'all open', or certainly close to. Some of the official snow depth numbers are a bit ridiculous considering the snowfall over the last day or so. But anyway, it's the fresh layer that really matters. Very fine morning and maybe afternoon on the cards before the snow clouds move back in. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 235cm Posted on Wednesday 20th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's stormy again here in Shiga Kogen with more snow once again. Strong winds have blown it all around but on average I would say about 20cm of fresh.... and it is really coming down now as I sit here writing this. Great stuff. Not the kind of weather where I want to venture out on the slopes as it's heavy snow and gusty winds. It does look like some lifts are open with others on hold due to the conditions. The last three days though has seen lots of snow fall and was just what we all needed. More numbers expected to add up before tomorrow and then regular snow through until Sunday when heavy snow is again on the forecast. This is more like it! Once the storm clears conditions should be really great. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Heavy snow! Not much earlier on as it has only really taken hold this morning, but it's really falling quite heavily now and there's a wind as well so it feels very cold outside. Storm like conditions just at the moment. Snow should ease off tomorrow and then we are due a few days of potentially clearer skies - a great time to be here if you can! In the meantime, lots of snowfall today please let's get as much in as possible... Take care if you are out on the slopes though, visibility is generally limited and in some places very poor - be sure you know where you are going. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 295cm Posted on Monday 25th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Lots more fresh snowfall this morning to report to you... good quality stuff too. It is still falling now this morning so continues to pile up. The official snow depths as often is the case seem very... not enough! Let's look at the forecast: Clearer skies expected tomorrow and perhaps Wednesday and into Thursday too. It will not be quite as cold as it has been but fingers crossed still remain very cold. We should be back to snow into Thursday and heavy snow is currently on the forecast for Friday night and Saturday. The last week or so with the regular and often decent snowfall has really changed things. All good. :) Shiga Kogen Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Monday 25th January 2016 Total snowfall at base 295cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 35 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 28cm (18th January) November 2015 snowfall 7cm reported on 3 days December 2015 snowfall 105cm reported on 17 days January 2016 snowfall 183cm reported on 15 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Shiga Kogen. - Shiga Kogen Now: Friday 29th January 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 299cm Posted on Friday 29th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a very fine day with blue skies to enjoy and nice cold conditions. It's warmer this morning with some resorts even reporting temperatures in low positive numbers. Snow is falling this morning, but it's coming from the south and with the milder temperature is on the heavier and wet side, so not top grade Shiga Kogen quality really. Still, I'll take 4cm of this kind of snow than none (or rain, heaven forbid!). The forecast still tells us to expect heavy snow tonight with it easing off tomorrow morning... There's a generally foggy kind of feel to things here in Maruike just at the moment and visibility is poor. This season really is proving to be an odd one by all accounts - in most regions of Japan too, not just this part of northern Nagano. Generally difficult to read and know what's going to happen next. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season goes. Obviously we still have less snow than usual so unless that builds up significantly in February, resorts are going to be struggling to remain open as long as they want to this year. Let's hope that February comes out and brings us the goods. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 315cm Posted on Saturday 30th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Just to keep the 'odd season' theme going, yesterday we got some... rain/sleet... falling here in Shiga Kogen. Oh dear. Luckily by evening it was snow once again and this morning there's a nice new layer of it to help us quickly forget and be happy. It's on the heavier side once again but a decent new layer is a decent new layer and adds to that base - all important stuff. It's colder this morning I'm happy to report too and temperatures should be continuing to drop back to where they should be over the next few days. Good. Next snow? Perhaps tomorrow night into Monday. Should be colder too, so perhaps the snow will be of the lighter and fluffier variety. Anyway, I'm off out to enjoy myself. Hope you can too. Until tomorrow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a relatively 'warm' one (for Shiga Kogen) with lots of fog around at times. By evening time it was colder and clearer but... it just... doesn't feel like late January weather. Hard to believe that come tomorrow we are already into February. Earlier on this morning snow was falling and there's a cm or two around base areas and it is colder. It has gradually been clearing but having said that, light snow is still falling right now here in Maruike area.... but the sun is shining down as well! It looks and feels like it might clear up, but who knows. The forecast says that snow clouds might be with us today and tomorrow to be followed by clearer weather around Tuesday and Wednesday. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Light snow falling this morning here in Shiga Kogen. Again, it's wetter snow than we might hope for at the beginning of February, but we'll take it. I love the phrase that Kumanoyu are using for their 5cm of fresh this morning 'puchi-powder'. Puchi usually translates as small/petite, or in this case I suppose 'a bit'. Kawaii! Anyway, yes a bit of new snowfall on the slopes this morning. Light snow was falling here in the Maruike area just before, but has eased off now though I imagine that snow is still falling in parts of the region now. It's not expected to last though or not beyond this afternoon anyway. Lots of cloud and 'gas' around so making visibility limited in some places. It looks like there's a fair chance of some sunshine tomorrow and Wednesday and the next snowfall after today due sometime around Thursday/Friday. Come on February - deliver the goods please! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Very early this morning it was clearer skies but right now snow is falling and there's just about 1cm on the ground so far. It's actually coming down quite heavily just right now but that is not expected to last with clearer weather on the forecast. It is keeping very cold though which is of course what we want. The forecasts have been wrong a fair bit this season though, so you never know what will happen these days - or so it seems. Talking of which they tell us to look forward to some heavy snow later in the day on Friday and into Saturday. Perfect for the weekend, so lets just hope that is happens. Snow is forecast for today of course and tonight too - possibly getting heavier later in the day - though it probably won't last long into tomorrow. After some clearer skies, more snow is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. Not much else to report really this morning - it's looking quite busy out there this morning. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's the calm after the storm this morning here in Shiga Kogen. With another 25+cm of snow to report since yesterday, it's a close to perfect morning to be strapping on the board(s). What more can I say? (Other than once again the snow depths at the resorts aren't budging much. Just ignore that!) Oh yes the other thing is about the forecast which I mentioned yesterday. It's still looking like we might get some rain up here even on Saturday but hopefully it will be turning into snow on Sunday. One of those times when we just want the forecast to be wrong. I'll let you know. In the meantime, a fine day to be here today - and lots of people coming up to enjoy the holiday (it's a national holiday).
