  • Nozawa Now: Saturday 16th March 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 803cm Weather overview Clear, some cloud Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted on Saturday 16th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's a mostly fine morning here in Nozawa Onsen today. We have some high altitude cirrus clouds passing overhead that tend to preceded frontal systems. This correlates with the forecast; we expect snow showers to move through later this afternoon and tonight. Riding this morning will be on classic spring snow; firm in the morning and softening by midday. South facing slopes may become sticky as the sun intensifies. Like yesterday the best riding will be had in the Yamabiko area. It's a good day to practice in the park and pipe with the soft forgiving conditions. Likewise mogul runs are as good as they can get in these kinds of conditions. Selected off piste gullies may still hold the occasional powder field, although will be heavy going. Light winds, few people, sunshine, perfect views yesterday. Looking at the extended forecast we should see another clear day tomorrow before a warming trend takes hold. Unfortunately very warm temperatures and possibly heavy rain are predicted at the same time on Monday, not a good combination - we can just hope that the forecast backs off. The warmth is set to remain until Wednesday night when there's a chance of light snow showers and colder temperatures - not expecting anything major though. --- Lifts operating: All lifts operating Courses open: All courses open except Grand Prix Kandahar East Kandahar West Challenge 39 Official snow depths: Yamabiko 320cm Uenotaira 280cm Hikage 155cm Nagasaka 150cm Karasawa 100cm Nozawa Now 2012-2013 season Data as of Saturday 16th March 2013 Total snowfall at base so far 803cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 54 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 60cm (on 4th January) November 2012 snowfall 3cm reported on 1 day December 2012 snowfall 213cm reported on 15 days January 2013 snowfall 311cm reported on 18 days February 2013 snowfall 253cm reported on 16 days March 2013 snowfall 23cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 803cm Weather overview Overcast Wind Strong Temperature - Visibility Good Posted on Monday 18th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's a very windy one in Nozawa this morning. The strong winds mean that we have limited operations on the mountain this morning with mainly lower lifts and runs only open. Temperatures are extremely warm, up to around +14 today as predicted, but crowds are very light. Today's snow will be slushy from the outset, slow in places. The pick today will be the groomers and park which will be fun and forgiving considering the snow conditions. Off piste runs will be best avoided today unless you are up for a real challenge turning. Likewise yesterday was also extremely warm but the sunny conditions made for some very nice spring skiing. Up top in the Yamabiko area offered the best turns as did the terrain park and various mogul runs. Yesterday was pretty uncrowded considering it was a Sunday. Looking at the forecast ahead we should see some improved snow conditions by Thursday when a cold front and light snow looks possible. Until then though it's mostly very warm conditions with rain or overcast skies is likely. --- Lifts operating: Only lower lifts operating due to wind Courses open: Limited, subject to change depending on conditions Official snow depths: Yamabiko 310cm Uenotaira 270cm Hikage 145cm Nagasaka 140cm Karasawa 85cm Nozawa Now 2012-2013 season Data as of Monday 18th March 2013 Total snowfall at base so far 803cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 54 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 60cm (on 4th January) November 2012 snowfall 3cm reported on 1 day December 2012 snowfall 213cm reported on 15 days January 2013 snowfall 311cm reported on 18 days February 2013 snowfall 253cm reported on 16 days March 2013 snowfall 23cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. It started as rain yesterday but was snowing later on and this morning the resort is reporting up to 10cm of snowfall on the upper slopes with just a few cm down on lower slopes and village areas. • Nozawa Now: Monday 1st April 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 809cm Weather overview Blue skies Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Great Posted on Monday 1st April 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Here we are in April already. Where did the season go?! As mentioned previously from today we're into the final stretch with just upper areas of Nozawa Onsen open and reduced lift ticket prices. Details posted below. After getting rather wet yesterday with rain starting around lunchtime down in the village (boo), it's lovely and sunny this morning in Nozawa (hurray). Let me just temper that by saying that apparently there was snow falling higher up - but I wasn't there to witness it, unfortunately. The resort is reporting 2cm since yesterday up there. Lots of blue sky and the sun shining down on us. It's a fairly chilly start with a high of around 7 degrees forecast for later on in the day today. It should be a nice day to be out. The rain didn't do the remaining snow any favours of course, and I would imagine some rather crusty conditions out there this morning. We will probably see the snow dry up from lower slopes rather quickly now. So fine weather today and then tomorrow it looks like the rain will be back. ----- Official snow depths: Yamabiko 260cm Uenotaira 210cm Hikage 80cm Lower slopes now closed ----- Nozawa Onsen opening dates from 1st April to the end of season: From 1st April until 6th May: Nagasaka Gondola Yamabiko Number 2 Four lift Yamabiko Four lift From 1st April until 7th April 12th April until 14th April 20th-21st April 27th April until 6th May Uenotaira Four lift Snow Park 6th-7th April 13th-14th April 20th-21st April 27th April until 6th May Paradise Four lift ----- Courses open at Nozawa Onsen: Yamabiko A Yamabiko B Yamabiko C Yamabiko D Yamabiko E Uenotaira Bunabayashi (to the Nagasaka Gondola mid station) Paradise Utopia A Utopia B Rinkan (until the Hikage area) From tomorrow the resort will be 'working with snow' between the Nagasaka area and Hikage areas. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 809cm Weather overview Cloud, fog Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted on Sunday 31st March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's a bit warmer this morning in Nozawa and another cloudy morning but somewhat brighter than yesterday was. There's morning foggy conditions up at Yamabiko as well again this morning - less than yesterday and it looks like visibility has been improving in the last hour or so up there. Warmer I said but still keeping fairly chilly and certainly not warming up like it was the other week. Not for the moment anyway. We will probably see warmer conditions once again from Tuesday. Rain is probably this afternoon, perhaps borderline snow on the top slopes? Would be nice. As mentioned before today is the last day of the season for the lower parts of the mountain. From tomorrow you can get the Nagasaka Gondola up to the snow. Courses open will be as follows: Yamabiko A Yamabiko B Yamabiko C Yamabiko D Yamabiko E Uenotaira Bunabayashi (to the Nagasaka Gondola mid station) Paradise Utopia A Utopia B Rinkan (until the Hikage area) From tomorrow the resort will be 'working with snow' between the Nagasaka area and Hikage areas. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Lunchtime report on this rather warm day in Nozawa. So warm in fact that the resort has reporting a temperature of +17 degrees at the Hikage area, 12 degrees at Uenotaira and 10 degrees at Yamabiko. (As you might expect... no new snow!!) But it has been a fine morning here with blue skies all around and not much of a wind. Tomorrow will very probably be similar up until later on in the afternoon when rain is due and that will probably continue into Sunday as well. Freezing level is zooming right up well above 3000m and so we can't expect anything but rain up top either. Hopefully it will hold out until late tomorrow so Saturday visitors can avoid the rain, though Sunday is looking a much riskier choice according the forecasts. ----- Official snow depths: Yamabiko 255cm Uenotaira 195cm Hikage 45cm Lower slopes of the resort are now closed for the season. ----- Nozawa Onsen opening dates from 1st April to the end of season: From 1st April until 6th May: Nagasaka Gondola Yamabiko Number 2 Four lift Yamabiko Four lift From 1st April until 7th April 12th April until 14th April 20th-21st April 27th April until 6th May Uenotaira Four lift Snow Park 6th-7th April 13th-14th April 20th-21st April 27th April until 6th May Paradise Four lift ----- Courses open at Nozawa Onsen: Yamabiko A Yamabiko B Yamabiko C Yamabiko D Yamabiko E Uenotaira Bunabayashi (to the Nagasaka Gondola mid station) Paradise Utopia A Utopia B Rinkan (until the Hikage area) To get back to the Nagasaka Gondola from Rinkan use the shuttle bus from Isemiya course. A cloudy start to the day in Nozawa and it looks like poor visibility up on those top runs that are open - fog? • Nozawa Now: Tuesday 5th February 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 531cm Weather overview Cloud, light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Poor but improving Posted on Tuesday 5th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Today in Nozawa Onsen we have overcast conditions and passing light snow showers. It will be fast and icy until we receive a more significant dump of snow, as we only had a dusting overnight. You know you are a good skier or boarder if you can hold a carve on days like today as yesterdays rain combined with an overnight snap freeze will result in sheet ice conditions. The resort is reporting just 1-3cm of snowfall since 3pm yesterday. Yesterday was good in the morning. The top lifts and gondola were on wind hold to 11am, but when they opened riders were greeted with a decent depth of fresh snow and partly cloudy conditions up top. A surprisingly fun morning to be had for those who were patient. Following that rain moved in during the afternoon spoiling the nice conditions and turning the snow to glue in most areas. However the mountain quickly emptied as people escaped indoors, which resulted in some of the most un-crowded slopes seen so far this season. There should be no significant snow falls today, however from tomorrow we expect persistent snow showers for most of the week, with a clear day in between on Thursday. A significant dump looks possible around Sunday. Still a long way off, so likely to chop and change. • Nozawa Now: Monday 4th February 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 530cm Weather overview Light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Variable Posted on Monday 4th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It looks like we have occasional snow flurries and mist about Nozawa Onsen this morning. The weekend crowds have moved on and there is sure to be a few fresh tracks around. There should be a warming trend today with the freezing level spiking around 1700 meters later today. Some light rain is also possible today. Yesterday was an ice rink on the mountain. Groomed runs were manageable with good edge control and a head for busy conditions. Patches of discontinuous fresh powder were available through the trees, but in between those was sheet ice and fields of death cookies. Challenging conditions too say the least. The resort is reporting between 2-4cm of new snowfall on the mountain. Following today's potential rain we should expect persistent snow showers with sunny breaks in between. Fingers crossed for some powder! Stronger winds higher on the mountain later might affect lift operations this morning. • Nozawa Now: Sunday 10th February 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 573cm Weather overview Partly cloudy Wind Light wind Temperature - Visibility Very good Posted on Sunday 10th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Snow from the dump over the last few days is still in excellent quality thanks to persisting cold temperatures, and if you know where to look there are fresh tracks on offer. It should be another good days riding... if you can avoid the crowds. High crowd levels this long weekend are causing some long lift lines... plan good to avoid. It's certainly busy out there and a testament to the popularity of Nozawa. It’s partly cloudy at the moment but generally nice blue skies and we expect clouds and snow showers to return by later in the afternoon. No new snow to report. Yesterday was a great day on the mountain, hardly a frown on the hill. Waiting for lifts aside! Deep fresh powder was on offer through the trees. The snow was so deep that some of the classic tree runs around Yamabiko were not steep enough to maintain forward momentum. Oh the problems we face! That icy base layer which has been hanging around is now less of a concern, gradually getting buried. As so often happens the snow that was expected tonight seems to have been pushed back a little. We now expect the heaviest period of snowfalls to occur on Monday morning and to last all day. Should be a cold day too. Following that light snow showers should continue till Wednesday when we expect clear skies to return. All in all a decent week for snowfall looks likely. Tomorrow is a holiday and so it will still be busy. Probably less than today but still a lot of people probably taking advantage of the long weekend. As we get into the afternoon people will start making their way back home and so it should get quieter.
