What are you going to do?). Time for a climb, I think; there's probably some good snow on north faces. And with possible heavy rain on the schedule for tomorrow, too, it's time to act today. OK, with only two of the resorts having submitted reports, here's the word: current temperature is about -1°C at the base of Akakan; no fresh snow, the wind is light from the west. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The wind is way up, the rain is occasionally sprinkling down, but no heavy rains just yet on a Monday in Myoko. You can almost see the snowpack decreasing in the breeze, though; there's still a good amount of snow up on the hill, but the roadside walls are just falling away rapidly. It is WARM, too - all the morning reports are in the just-under-plus-ten degrees area (except Akakura Onsen, which didn't file today, and Seki, which has listed a cryptic "00" for the temperature....) Looks like rain will continue through tomorrow, when one again the freezing line will be coming way don the mountain, bringing some snow with it. It's definitely been a blustery March this year (unfortunately without the powder we've seen over the last few seasons). The high wind makes lift closures possible, so check before you go, especially the gondolas at Suginohara and Akakan. Sunday is starting out better than we originally expected; after two warm, sunny days, it suddenly got cold late yesterday afternoon, with a bit of light snow in the early evening. It's back to the sun again today, and looks like it will be warm again (the early reports are all over on temperatures; the positive numbers are probably the later reports). A good day to get out; the next few days are likely to be rainy. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The weather report predicted rain, but luckily that seems to have stayed in the northern part of Niigata Prefecture. We here in this little triangle tucked into Nagano (and a lot of people do think that Myoko is in Nagano) are enjoying a sunny, very spring day. VERY spring--out for a light ski hike this morning with the dog, and the conditions are like what we'd normally find in April. Looks like a really short hiking season; too bad, because it's a gret way to keep in shape (for both dog and man) between the end of daily skiing and summer activities. We should have a couple more waves of cold and warm weather in the coming days, including the possibility of some snow. Not widely optimistic about one last big dump of powder, though--it does happen, but this might not be the year for it. But there's still snow out there, so enjoy the sun and skiing! 2:40pm update: Just a quick update: it's gotten colder, and turned to soup outside. Heavy fog. Can't see a thing. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The next weather cycle has in fact arrived, with blowing snow and temperatures back in the minus again. It's not as blustery as earlier this morning (although we do have new cornices on the snowpack outside the house, and drifts alongside the car). Lifts are running fine now (checked on the Akakan gondola; no warnings from Suginohara this morning). It's nice to have things a little cleaner and whiter - it would be great to get 30+cm and really enjoy some light snow, but I doubt that much will fall. The local forecast is for the snow to taper off later in the day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sorry to be late on this last regular day of the season - but there's nothing much to write about. It's rainy and gray, matching the mood at the end of the season (OK, there still is more skiing to do, but I thought that was appropriately poetic). It's been an interesting season. Some really good snow in January and early February, but an early-arriving spring in March without any last big powder fall (as we have had for many years). Well, it sometimes happens in April, so I shouldn't close the door on that just yet. The ski areas report at least steady business, if no major growth, but we did see a lot more international visitors in Myoko. I'm happy to say that a lot of them reported that they're here not just for the snow, but for the unique Myoko-ness of the place. That's something I hope we can always keep, even as things change. Not my last report, though; I'll keep things updated for the areas that are still open. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I may have spoken too soon on the "it's OK but gray" comments of yesterday. A few hours after I posted, it got pretty nasty up here, with some pretty thick fog and limited visibility. But then we saw a little sun before the wind picked up, and it started to snow. A nice little fall in the end, too - probably 10cm or so on the slopes, a little less here at the base. Nice to see - it may make for some sticky skiing today, but that's OK. Even the trees are white once more, with a nice blue sky above it all. I'm going skiing! More high clouds than foggy gloom, although the peaks are starting to become obscured by the mists. Pretty sticky snow on the groomed yesterday; perhaps a little cloudiness wouldn't hurt (it was nice out in the woods, though, yesterday, with even a few pockets of powder left on north-facing slopes).
