And there's never enough is there, especially in this tense early-season period as we all eagerly await enough for the lifts to start moving... And this morning there's snow on the ground here. Not as much as we would like (see above!), but good to see things looking whiter once again. Looking around for information from the resorts and I notice that Hakuba 47 were reporting 10cm of base up at the top gondola station during the day yesterday. There is a lot of cloud around this morning but it is not snowing and we might see clearer skies as the day progresses. There is a chance of more snowfall tonight and then from Friday into the weekend. Take a deep breath, and let's take it day by day together! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa and this is looking a bit more like it! Snow has arrived again and the resort yesterday afternoon was reporting 25cm of it up top. Yey! Just a few cm around base areas but things are looking much whiter once again. It's not snowing right now and some forecasts even tell us that we can expect a bit of sun during the day, but a bit more snow is likely overnight tonight and the forecast for over the weekend is looking promising. All fingers crossed. Nozawa Onsen will open as soon as there is enough snow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It is a cold morning in Shiga Kogen and I am happy to be able to report 9cm of fresh snowfall on the ground outside my place this morning (since my report yesterday). Things are calmer today and there was a lot of cloud around early on but it has been clearing over the last hour or so and it's actually quite bright at the moment. Perhaps we'll get the sun as well later. Snow is forecast again for tonight though and there's snow forecast over the weekend as well. It all counts now and a few decent snowfalls will really let more lifts and courses start opening up more. This morning it looks like the Number 3 pair lift at Takamagahara Mammoth and the Number 4 pair lift at Kumanoyu have also started their long season! Until tomorrow... We knew something was ahead yesterday when the day started with the rumbling of thunder high above the mountains, one of the signs of snow ahead (actually, I hear it's from graupel—soft hail—high up in the clouds bouncing around and generating static electricity). We got about 25 centimeters, my snow ruler tells me. It's wet, it's sticky, but everything's white and that is good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 1pm update: Since I posted my report it seems that the Jumbo Number 1 lift and a few more courses are opening at Annupuri - I have adjusted the operation details below. Please note that all other report information remains unchanged from my original report. --- Original morning report: A good morning to you from here in Hirafu. Yesterday the winds were affecting the lifts at Niseko Annupuri from the start of the day of course, and by noon the top lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu and Hanazono were also having to stop due to the windy conditions up there. Happily this morning it is less windy and so all of the lifts that are planned to be operating today should get off to a smooth start. I was thinking I might be able to report more snow than we actually have this morning - it was coming down hard at times, but it was also being blown about by strong winds - and in the end it's just 4cm of fresh here at base. 20cm has been added to the official snow depth for upper areas of Niseko Grand Hirafu though, so it sounds like a trip up there is definitely required for a first-hand check! As for current weather conditions, it's just mostly cloudy skies as I write my report but the forecast still has snow clouds never far away over the coming days and we can probably expect more snow by tonight. There's a few small breaks in the clouds and a bit of blue sky on show in places as well. It's nice and cold this morning and probably won't get much 'warmer' than -5C here at base, so wrap up well if you are heading out. Resort operations appear to be generally unchanged for the moment as we wait for more snow to allow them to open more of the mountain up. --- Resort specific lift opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day): All four resort areas appear to be able to open as planned at the start of the day, though it looks like the Ace Number 2 Center Four lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu is going to have a delayed opening - currently unclear how long that delay will be. The mild temperatures and rain stuck with us all through yesterday but the forecast was bang on for today with a return to negative temperatures and snow. The snow has come down quickly this morning, and at 8am there was already an impressive 13cm in the village. The snow is quite heavy which will be ideal for covering up the bare patches and building up the base on the lower slopes. Snow and cold temperatures will stay with us for the rest of the week. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello from a mild and foggy Niseko. Poor visibility here this morning, down to village level. There is no new snowfall to report. It is an obvious thing to say of course, but we are very much in need of fresh snowfall. The courses that are open really need it with the mild weather over the last few days (and of course the courses not yet open also really need it!) It seems that lower courses that had been open on the Niseko Grand Hirafu & Hanazono side of the mountain are now having to close due to the snow conditions (Setsuzoku, Stairway to Heaven, Crystal Garden, Renraku). The exciting news is that the forecast is looking very good starting from tonight and then basically through into at least next weekend. Lots of snowfall lined up in the coming week, so we all just hope that it happens like that. Might get stormy at times. I look forward to bringing you heroic stories of required snow shovelling (something those of us who live here need to do before we can strap the skis or boards on!) --- It is very early season yet but I have already received a 'complaint' from someone new to my reports, apparently over my 'lack of excitement'. Well, I'm really not here to hype up my reports and give you some kind of distorted dream-like account of what is happening here. I'm here to provide reports on what the weather is doing, how much snow is falling and generally any related news I can. And I do get very excited - when things call for genuine excitement. I may also have a little light-hearted moan or two if that's what conditions call for. Bottom line, I love Niseko (and Japan in general) and I just want to share what is happening here with people visiting in an honest way. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The snow kept coming yesterday and today's measurement is another 16cm. Substantially more than 16cm has fallen on the mountain which has meant the base has increased from 90cm to 120cm on the upper mountain! All this snow has allowed another lift to open, Furano Downhill Romance #3 chairlift, allowing access to the Panorama Course. The lower mountain now has enough coverage and Sailer Course is skiable all the way down to the Ropeway Base Station. To cap this all off we have clear blue skies with calm conditions except for a light breeze. It will be an absolutely fantastic day. Furano Ropeway 8:30am-15:00pm for uploading/downloading only. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A very good morning to you from here in sunny Hirafu. Yesterday was something of a ride with the weather. It was calming down by the end of the day and making way for what is a beautiful morning here in Niseko. Apart from a few small clouds hanging around here and there, it's lovely blue skies all around and the sun is out. Very nice. Winds were blowing the snow around yesterday, but I am going with 3cm as the snowfall since my last report and surely quite a bit more on places on the mountain. While it may be far from peak season conditions yet, of course, it should be fun out there this morning. As we approach 8:30am it looks like there are a fair few people lining up for the first lift at Grand Hirafu. It is a fairly mild morning here and currently about 0C here at base and it should be a generally calm weekend. Once we get into next week though things are looking quite exciting from late Monday with some decent snowfall lined up. That's what we like. Today is of course the first Saturday of December and more lifts and courses are scheduled to open from this morning - especially in the Hirafu area. This is where things start to get somewhat complicated regarding 'what's open', but I have tried my best to get the latest information pre-opening this morning from official sources and added it below. Remember, things can change and may well do so - and also that the snow is not particularly deep yet (surely no-one told you that?!), and so there are bushes and rocks and the like still showing through in places. I'll try to keep a track on it all each morning in the hope that sooner than later everywhere will be able to open! Today marks the first day of operation for the new King Number 3 triple lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu and there will be a small ceremony there before it starts its never-ending journey. The new lift is mentioned in the resort introduction here, but basically the original triple lift has been changed into a new hooded quad and is a bit longer. Let's hope it is a worthy improvement. --- What is planned to be open today? This morning I have (just about) 1cm of snow to report, though I may be being slightly generous there. A thin layer of snow once again as we wait for some decent snow to fall in the region. When will that be? It's still looking like Monday into Tuesday is when to expect some potentially decent snow. Zao Onsen will open as soon as there is enough snow. The town went through a significant rain event yesterday with rain falling for most of the day on the lower slopes but thankfully temperatures higher up were cold enough to ensure that the rain was snow. We are certainly getting some varied weather at the moment and today we have woken up to find 13cm of fresh snow in the village. With warmer temperatures this is not the usual light dry Furano powder but instead reasonable heavy snow which is ideal for building up the base. The forecast is for continuing snow today. Winds are moderate at base level and strong at the top of the resort. Furano Zone is partially open with Furano Ropeway operating to upload and download skiers to and from the upper mountain. It is not possible to ski from the top to bottom of the mountain yet. The skiable lift is Downhill Romance no.2 chair and the skiable courses are the upper part of Sailer and Spies Course, and Shirakaba Course. Restaurant Downhill is open. Kitanomine Zone is closed.
