- Naeba Now: Wednesday 25th January 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 65cm Snowfall at base this season 686cm Posted on Wednesday 25th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Well hello! There is nothing much to say other than SNOW! The white stuff just keeps on falling here in Naeba! The constant precipitation over the last 24 hours has put 65cm of fresh powder on the ground. Due to the wind and hard work of the piste maintainers you wont find such deep powder on the runs. There will be plenty of places though that are much deeper where the snow has drifted. It looks set to continue snowing all day, potentially clearing for a short period tomorrow and into Friday. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . I don't have much to report to you this morning really. It's mainly cloudy at the moment and no new snowfall being reported though just a bit since my morning report yesterday. Might the skies clear today? Or tomorrow... forecasts seem to disagree on that so we'll just have to see what nature brings us. There's not a whole lot of fresh snow on the weekly forecast at the moment, we just hope it remains cold to keep the snow conditions. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 484cm Posted on Wednesday 25th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It has been really cold yesterday and this morning too.. I was up there yesterday wishing I had an extra layer on. Won't make that mistake today! But I'm definitely heading out there to enjoy another fine delivery of fresh snow. I'm measuring 30cm. 25-40cm is being reported by the resort since yesterday morning (with 15-25cm of that being reported during the day yesterday), so there should be lots of untouched to be found. The clouds should be dispersing by late tonight and we are expecting some lovely clear weather from the start of tomorrow which is going to be just excellent. Today will be too, just remember that extra layer and goggles. Remember, be excited but take care out there and stay safe. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 49cm Snowfall at base this season 930cm Posted on Wednesday 25th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . When you're wrong, you're wrong: there was powder out there... but there was a LOT of powder out there. Probably great out on the slopes, but those who headed into the untracked back were, ah, slow.... Like no movement unless the slope was really steep. And it kept on snowing throughout the day. And the wind blew, but not as much as near the ocean, where I was yesterday afternoon. It's still snowing now, but it's bright enough to make me think the sun is trying to come out. We could use a little settling of the snowpack, to be honest. But people should be careful heading off away from the resorts; the possibility of sluffing is really high, which, combined with all our little valleys and ridges here, could be a bad combination. - Niseko Now: Tuesday 24th January 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 398cm Posted on Tuesday 24th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Ah, the calm after the storm. Here at my Hirafu base I have another 12cm of fresh snowfall to report to you and I would imagine there is a fair bit more higher up - I see the Avalanche Report this morning is reporting 20cm. So there should be a nice new layer to play with this morning. And the other good news is that after the windy conditions yesterday (especially in the morning), it is much calmer this morning. So all the lifts should be opening as normal. In fact, it's a beautiful morning with bright blue skies all around and sunshine. Lovely. And the webcam shows a lot of people lined up for the first lift of the day too. Come on, give us a wave! It's still looking like potentially heavy* snowfall is due on Friday and snowfall continuing into the weekend, so we can look forward to that too. * Heavy, but light... of course. :) --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -12℃, 20cm snowfall and snowdrifts development. Moiwa 800m: -117℃, N5m/s (15m/s@9pm, 17m/s@11pm, 10m/s@3am) snowdrifts development. Annupuri 1150m: -17℃, E15m/s, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -18℃, 20cm snowfall, snowdrifts developing in the west sides. Kamui cape lighthouse: E5m/s, 1041hPa, 2.0m waves. The storm has temporarily calmed down, but will pick up again as the isobars tightens. The snowdrifts that developed yesterday are uniform and stable at 600m elevation, however stabilization is delayed above 800m and 60cm thick surface slab avalanches from Jan 22nd layer are to be expected in high elevation leeward slopes. Stay away form large valley’s bottom. Avalanches are natural occurrences that won’t become an accident if nobody is there. Gates 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 will be closed in the morning. The easterly storm have generated large development of snowdrifts and cornices and the mountain looks different than usual. The snow in the forests is moderately dense, bouncy and fun to ride. Plan your day according to the given conditions. A strong cold air-mass flowed in and temperature is low, beware of frostbites. --- Official resort snow depths as of Tuesday 24th January 2017: Niseko Grand Hirafu & Hanazono Top - 265cm Base - 105cm Niseko Village Top - 220cm Base - 130cm Niseko Annupuri Top - 230cm Base - 135cm --- Night skiing is planned until Monday 20th March 2017 at the Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village resort areas. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 327cm Posted on Tuesday 24th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao and there's more snow on the ground this morning. The very cold conditions remain (-14C at top) and snow continues to fall. Poor visibility again on mountain. So it's not the kind of conditions that everyone enjoys but some lovely snow. For people who like a bit of sunshine and fine views, we're probably going to need to wait until perhaps Thursday for some of that and it looks like around Friday it will be milder - perhaps even temperatures going into low positive numbers. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 454cm Posted on Tuesday 24th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from another snowing morning here in Nozawa. It's cold too. Some interesting numbers being reported by the resort this morning ranging from 45cm at Yamabiko to 10cm at Karasawa - and 38cm at Nagasaka. These are the numbers from yesterday afternoon and overnight added up. Perhaps wind can account for this and at my measuring point I have measured 24cm. Bottom line though is another nice new layer of fresh snow out there. At the time of writing it seems the Uenotaira quad lift is on hold due to (presumably) wind. There's more to come as well during the day today and into tomorrow. If you're looking for clearer weather, Thursday is probably the day. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 386cm Posted on Monday 23rd January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Snow started falling yesterday and this morning there's a layer of fresh snow on the ground here at base. Hurray! I have 9cm of it to report to you at the time of writing and it is continuing to snow - and should continue today, so we should be adding to that during the day. Today wind is a big issue from the start of the day with the resort specific status as it is at 8:30am added below. Basically top lifts not opening. It should be very cold tonight and more cloud/snow conditions tomorrow. Just doesn't look like a major dump should be expected though; according to forecasts. Friday seems a better bet for that... Until tomorrow! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -6℃, 15cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -6℃, ESE7.2m/s, 152cm snowpack. Anupuri 1150m: -11℃, NW16m/s, snowdrift developing. Hirafu1250m: -10℃, 12m/s, large development of snowdrifts. Kamui cape lighthouse: ENE4m/s, 1003hPa, 3.2m waves. Snowfall picked up as the low-pressure passed and made snowdrifts develop in areas above 800m. A 25cm blanket of wind-affected snow is evenly covering the west facing slopes. Looking at the snowfall transition, a good amount of little dense snow is present in slopes below 1000m, and the avalanche risk is moderately high. If the storm picks up, the hazard level will rise accordingly. Stay away from cornices and knolls, do not traverse across steep slopes. All gates are scheduled to open. Seek advice at the gates, before stepping out of bounds. Hazard levels are objectively evaluated and gates will close when the level are high. Niseko community respects the freedom and cares for the safety of the guests. Anyone is allowed to step out of bounds if they will, but only when the gates are open. Beware of sudden weather changes. The snow in the treeruns is splendid today. --- Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day): Niseko Grand Hirafu Just the lower lifts are opening at the moment (Ace Family, Ace Number 1, King Number 1 and Holiday Number 1).
