- Naeba Now: Sunday 28th January 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 728cm Posted on Sunday 28th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning! It's a very different morning in Naeba today than it has been for the past few days. There are significant patches of blue sky, with some low, fluffy clouds clinging to the valley sides and peaks. The air temperature is still chilly, reading -7°C but without much wind it will feel pleasant compared to the last couple of days. Another 10cm of new snow in the past 24 hours will keep the pistes fresh as well. The sun will likely win out as the morning pushes on, so it will likely be a fantastic day to explore everything that Mt Naeba has to offer after the prolonged "Storm Finn". With the Dragondola open for the first time in a number of days. Looking forwards, we should expect clearer conditions for the remainder of today, with another squall of snow and cloud blowing in early tomorrow morning. This should stick around and gift us a little new snow through until Wednesday, when we should expect another break in the cloud for a day. Temperatures are expected to remain just below 0°C during daylight hours until at least Wednesday, meaning the snow should stay fresh on the pistes. Later in the week, it appears that our next significant storm system may blow into Mikuni valley on Friday, but we will need to wait and see what materialises over the next couple of days. Akarui! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The report is late today so I guess it is more of a wrap up of the day. There was moderate snowfall overnight and then quite a bit accumulated mid morning as well, bringing the total since the last report to 20cm. On the resort it was fantastic this morning with large areas left ungroomed and plenty of trackless powder for everyone. The day started of with low cloud on the resort, which limited visibility on the upper half of the mountain and then later the cloud lifted, although light was still flat at times. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 718cm Posted on Saturday 27th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba! It's a snowy, blustery morning up in Mikuni valley today. The air temperature is a cool -7°C, but the moderate wind is making it feel a little cooler than this. We should expect the snow to continue throughout the day, but accumulations will likely be modest. With the addition 13cm of fresh snow in the past 24 hours, we have had 92cm at the base so far during "Storm Finn". The pistes will be fresh today, likely with some powder stashes hidden where the wind can't get! The stronger winds overnight will have stripped some aspects and deposited on others, so seeking out the right aspect will get you the good snow today. Looking forwards, we should expect a dramatic change in the weather tomorrow, with calm winds and clearer skies. Air temperatures are expected to increase significantly, to around -1°C at the base. Into Monday, we can expect some more unsettled weather to blow through the valley, bringing a little snow and cooler temperatures again. The wind will remain less blustery than it has been over the past few days. Shinsen'na! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 799cm Posted on Saturday 27th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Things seems rather calm this morning. Oh, and yes, I have another 16cm of snowfall on ground at base to report to you. Excellent conditions yesterday and things should be similar today too. Without wind messing with plans, all resorts and gates should be open. Light snow falling at a fair pace currently and visibility looks fairly limited out on the mountain. Have fun! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 5am: -8℃, 15cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -8.8℃, W4.6m/s, 30cm snowfall, 100cm snowdrift development overnight. Annupuri1150m: -12℃, 40cm snowfall with snowdrifts. Hirafu1250m: -14℃, 30cm snowfall with development of soft slabs due to westerly winds. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW12m/s, Kamui cape N11m/s, 1006hPa, 2.2m waves. The wind has started to calm down, however snowdrifts are still slowly growing above 800m. No notable weakness has been observed during pressure test this morning. The avalanche risk is relatively low below 800m elevation. Avalanche hazard is still considerable in higher elevation as the Jan 25th low-pressure snowfall layer in the snowpack could trigger a 60cm thick surface slab avalanche in wind-loaded slopes above 1100m. Better not stimulate slopes around cornices and steep unobstructed slopes above treeline. Do not traverse under cornices. Ski one by one. Stay away from valley bottoms. These are all common sense for out of bounds riding. There are deep cracks lurking under new snow, be careful not to fall in. All gates are expected to open from the morning. Listen to the patrol’s advice, be prepared for the backcountry and always use gates. One track under the rope will lead others to follow and increase the chances of accidents. The snow is excellent this morning. Enjoy your day safely. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 574cm Weather overview Cloud, light snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Limited to poor Posted on Friday 26th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . The snow storm continues. Resort reporting 20cm of snowfall; I am measuring 24cm. Really great quality snow too. Temperatures are keeping very low - it is very cold out there. It looks like the 3A lift is struggling with the conditions and not opening this morning. Other lifts may well be delayed. I would check directly with the resort if you are one of the brave ones. So the conditions out there are still not very friendly and quite a few people will probably decided to sit it out. But the refresh we are in the process of receiving will most definitely be worth it. Sunday might be when things calm down. It should be an excellent weekend - but be prepared if you are coming.
