The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. Another modest amount of fresh snow to report this morning after that lovely day yesterday and this morning there is much more cloud around and as I write this very light snow falling. Was a bit worried that things might warm up a bit too much yesterday but it remained fairly cold and conditions were good. I was skiing over at Okushiga Kogen and they were very nice there anyway. The Kumanoyu resort area is reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow on the slopes. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A fine day yesterday with sun and blue skies in the morning and cloud gather as the afternoon went on. Temperatures rose to around +4 degrees C. Was that rain I heard in the middle of the night along with some noisy wind? Not sure. But this morning it is snowing lightly. The resort is reporting up to 5cm of fresh snow up top and 1-3cm on lower base areas so a bit of a dusting. It should be colder than it was yesterday with the forecasts telling us to expect temperatures around zero in the day. Forecast = sunshine tomorrow + snow over the weekend. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 484cm Posted on Thursday 15th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was a beautiful day yesterday with cloud coming over to join the fun mid to late afternoon. I was there until the end of the day at 47 yesterday and my friends and I all noticed how the 'days are getting longer'. And also how we are now right in the middle of the season, if the big resorts can open until early May. That's a lot more reports for me to write! I hope many of them are snowy. Talking about snow, here's the headlines from the resorts this morning: Hakuba Happo-one: 11cm (top Gondola station) Hakuba Goryu: up to 10cm Hakuba 47: 5-10cm Hakuba Cortina: 5+cm It's cloud cover this morning and light snow has started falling; visibility is looking generally limited on the webcams. It's not particular cold and the snow isn't the fluffiest but hopefully more so up top. The forecast over the coming few days is sunshine tomorrow and then back to snow falling over the weekend. Temperatures look set to take a drop around Saturday too so fingers crossed for a quality delivery. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 15th February 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 739cm Posted on Thursday 15th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . What a beautiful morning yesterday! Clear blue skies and sunshine. It was fairly mild, rising to around 6C and softening up the snow, and gradually getting cloudy later in the day. I was woken up just before 2am this morning by some very strong winds - and also unfortunately the sound of rain. Thankfully, it is snowing now as of 7:30am. If I had slept through I may not have known about the rain, though now that I know I can notice that there's less snow on top of my shed this morning. Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 'a bit' (without a number). Just a think layer around town. Anyway though it wasn't particularly cold overnight, without the sunshine it should be generally be colder than yesterday during the day today and not rising too much above zero. The roads are generally looking wet and the snow looks more wet than light, dry and fluffy; but it's certainly better than rain and hopefully we might get some more during the day. We can probably expect some sunshine during the day tomorrow; forecasts say in particular later on in the day. And then back to snow over the weekend and colder conditions too so hopefully we can get some nice quality snowfall. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning. - Niseko Now: Thursday 15th February 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 26cm Snowfall at base this season 1038cm Posted on Thursday 15th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I bring further good news, oh yes I do. We got a lot of snow during the day yesterday and some more overnight. Just a short while ago I measured 26cm of fresh snowfall to add to the reports from down here at base. It's actually quite bright as I type this - is that a bit of sun peeking through the clouds? ...probably temporary - though it is still snowing lightly and continued snow is there on the forecast through into next week. So things are looking good and there doesn't seem to be much wind about today either. All lifts look set to be operating as normal but we can expect gates to be closed this morning. There's plenty of fresh fun to be had within the resort so there is no need to be tempted to do anything silly or naughty. Take care and have fun! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -9℃, 15cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -12℃, NW20m/s wind from early morning, 10m/s average overnight, 30cm snowfall with large snowdrifts development. Annupuri 1150m: -13℃, W15m/s, 30cm snowfall, large snowdrifts. Hirafu 1250m: -12℃, strong NW wind, large snowdrifts. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW15m/s, Kamui cape NNW10m/s, 1007hPa, 1.8m waves. Intermittent snow & wind made snowdrifts develop unevenly. The newly formed snowdrifts from late night to early morning is very large (up to 100cm) and the knolls around 800m easily collapses due to weak bonding within the slabs. Avalanche risk remains high in the steep slopes of Mikaeri bowl, 1000m Osawa (Annupuri bowl) cornice slopes, Kozan no sawa (Back bowl) all area and Higashi-One cornice slopes. All gates are expected to close. Do not step out of bounds when the gates are closed. Avoid stimulating knolls and cornices anywhere today. Better not ride down to the bottom of valleys/gullies with cornices above it. Heavy deposit of wind-affected dense & grippy snow in the trees. Snowboarders are recommended to carry snowshoes & poles in case stuck at the bottom. The light is weak and the bumps are hard to see. Beware of hitting trees or falling into cracks. The conditions will get better soon. Be flexible & make conservative decisions according to the weather. We strongly hope the day will end safely. - Naeba Now: Wednesday 14th February 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 791cm Posted on Wednesday 14th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba! After a mixed day of weather yesterday, the accumulation at the base was limited to just 1cm. This doesn't seem to do justice to the condition of the pistes today, where small powder stashes are dotted about the mountain, on the lee-side of tree patches and roll overs. The skies are clear this morning, and despite the cool air temperature of -9°C, it feels pleasantly warm in the sunshine. There is little wind to concern ourselves with. Tonight, we can expect some clouds to roll in, with the potential from further small accumulations. Looking forwards, we have a mixed bag of weather coming up. The remainder of today will be warm and sunny, but by tomorrow the skies will have clouded over again. These are being brought in by a moderate wind, and cause the maximum air temperature to drop to comfortably below 0°C. On Friday, we will have another clearer block of cool air moving through, but the clouds will be back again by Saturday. Light to moderate snowfall is predicted over the weekend. - Nozawa Now: Wednesday 14th February 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 614cm Posted on Wednesday 14th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from a sunny Nozawa. Yesterday I think it's fair to say that we were hoping for more snow than we got. While Tokamachi to the north-east of us got some heavy snowfall, we only got a modest amount. By 3pm yesterday the resort was reporting 1cm on base areas and 7-10cm up top. This morning those base numbers remain unchanged with a bit more higher up - with a total of 15cm of fresh on Yamabiko since yesterday morning. This morning we are starting the day with cold conditions and beautiful blue skies. There's a bit of early morning low cloud around in places, but other than that it's clear and sunny and looks like it should be a beauty of a day. The mountain is looking very inviting. :) It might warm up a bit with the sun by this afternoon and by tomorrow hopefully we'll be back to snow falling and colder conditions. After that the next snow is due around Saturday. Fresh snowfall since yesterday (as reported by the resort): - Yamabiko (1407m): 15cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 9cm - Hikage (660m): 1cm - Nagasaka (615m): 1cm - Karasawa (563m): 1cm Official snow depth numbers: - Yamabiko (1407m): 320m - Uenotaira (1230m): 265cm - Hikage (660m): 185cm - Nagasaka (615m): 185cm - Karasawa (563m): 140cm Lifts operations: - All scheduled lifts appear to be operating as normal. - The Yunomine pair, Mizunashi triple, Challenge pair and Utopia pair lifts usually rested on weekdays. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 26cm Snowfall at base this season 1012cm Posted on Wednesday 14th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's another good morning from here in Niseko, or technically... Kutchan. I have just measured 26cm of fresh snowfall this morning and nice big flakes of goodness are falling as I write this report. Even they look happy. And I notice that todays haul takes my total observed snowfall for the season (from here at base) to over 10m. Hurray! Conditions were excellent yesterday with some lovely deep conditions easily found. Visibility could certainly have been better but... Remember, there's often (almost always?) going to be more snow on the mountain than I can report from base. And the forecast is showing continued snowfall into next week. Looks like Niseko is delivering for the busy Chinese New Year period. (Though people wanting clear blue skies might get disappointed!) I hope you can be here to enjoy this. I am going to get my gear on now and make my way to the lifts - might see some of you out there. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -11°, 15cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -12°, 40cm new snow, major cornice and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -15°, W18m/s, 40cm new snow, major snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -15°, strong wind to dawn, 40cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW14m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW14m/s, 1014hPa, wave 2.4m. A strong westerly wind with snow blew until dawn causing new cornice and snow drift growth above 800m. The wind is starting to drop but is still strong above 1100m. New cornice and snowdrift growth is unstable and easily fractures. Avalanche risk continues to be high. Gate openings still undecided. Please listen to the patrols advice. Today's avalanche risk is the same as yesterdays - High. Especially Osawa cornice face 1000m and Kozan no sawa around 1200m are dangerous. If gates do open, be wise about route choice, Do not stimulate cornices and knolls or traverse steep slopes. Most risks can be avoided be traveling on ridges and riding in forests. Be careful falling into cracks, they are everywhere and cannot be seen because they are covered in snow. The slopes have been reset and the snow has good rebound. Visibility is also better than yesterday. Do not duck ropes and for everyone's safety please respect and follow Niseko Rules. --- Wednesday 14th February 2018 Resort specific information (operations subject to change): Niseko Grand Hirafu & Niseko HANAZONO Resort Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from King Number 2) should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 470cm - Base: 240cm Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating - The top Jumbo Number 4 lift is on hold at the start of the day due to winds Official snow depth: - Top: 380cm - Base: 230cm Niseko Village Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from the Country Road Chair lift) should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 380cm - Base: 230cm Niseko Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Wednesday 14th February 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 1012cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 74 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (31st December) November 2017 snowfall 188cm reported on 11 days December 2017 snowfall 406cm reported on 27 days January 2018 snowfall 305cm reported on 26 days February 2018 snowfall 113cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. Back here in Hasuike it's fairly bright and visibility is pretty good - I can see Higashitateyama over in the distance - but some light snow is falling. There's some fresh snow on the ground. Kumanoyu are reporting about 20cm. I am measuring 12cm for the report. Will be interesting to see if we get any more snow out of today or if it clears up. Tomorrow morning might well start off sunny, if local forecasts are correct (with a return to some more snow around Thursday). Should be a good morning, and as we are back to a normal weekday it should be less busy than this past weekend.
