The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. The wind got itself under control yesterday and snow was falling on mountain by later in the afternoon. This morning the ski resorts are reporting just a thin layer of snow on the mountain (generally 1-2cm), though I suspect there was more than that up there.... but, hey, them be the numbers being reported. There's cloud around this morning, but there's some blue sky too. A different feel/look depending on which direction you look in. I'd expect sunshine today and tomorrow though. Looks like temps are going to warm up come Saturday and there's even the chance of rain but what comes after that looks pretty tasty - lots of snow. It should be a good few days; but keep your eye on the forecasts for Saturday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have 7cm of fresh snow to add to my reports and I notice 15cm being reported from Moiwa (below). So a modest refresh which should be nice to ride on. As I write the report this morning snow is falling, but it's quite bright and there is also blue sky in places so a somewhat confusing - and very pretty - mix of conditions. Perhaps some more light snow today, or perhaps clearing skies? Resorts are opening as planned this morning. Maybe no snow tomorrow and then slightly milder conditions on Saturday. Beyond that, the forecast is looking pretty good over the coming week and with the Chinese New Year holidays fast approaching, we can hopefully look forward to a fresh delivery of snow daily to fill in tracks (please). Perhaps with some sunshine during the day for the views. Onegai shimasu! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -6℃,10cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -9℃, WNW3.6m/s, 15cm snowfall, snowdrifts developed at night until dawn. Annupuri1150m: -9℃, W7m/s, 10cm snowfall, 330cm snowpack at 1000m. Hirafu1250m: -11℃, northerly wind & snow before dawn with 5cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW13m/s, Kamui cape WSW13m/s, 1011hPa, 1.2m waves. A light storm under 15m/s has persisted over the Sea of Japan, however the isobars are spreading out and the wind is starting to calm down in lower elevations. A northerly wind has picked up overnight and made cornices and snowdrifts develop. Surface slab avalanches are to be expected during the morning at knolls and around cornices above 800m elevation. Potential sliding layer is Feb 5-7th’ low pressure snowfall. The new snowdrifts are yet to form notable slabs, however are dangerous enough. All gates are expected to open. Please seek the patrol’s advice and be well prepared before stepping out of the gate. The snow in the trees is fairly good, probably a little better than yesterday’s. Avoid cornices and knolls. Cracks in the Mikaeri bowl area are growing. Glide cracks are forming due to heavy amount of snow, predominantly in south facing aspects. These cracks are forming as the slope is releasing its own tension. They most probably won’t slide right away, however chances of glide avalanches are to be expected. Stay away from slopes without wrinkles under cracks. Do not stay put at the bottom of the valleys. Avalanches strike from above. There is no 100% safety in the mountains, however most risks can be avoided by making conservative decisions. Beware of sudden weather change and falling in cracks, they are difficult to notice from above. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a beautiful morning with the sun hitting the upper part of the resort and giving the mountain an orange hue. The sky is perfectly clear and blue with no clouds around, and there is no wind present. On the snow front we haven't been quite so lucky with only a light 2cm dusting overnight, although on the mountain itself there will be a bit more. Apart from the cold it is a perfect morning. There was snow on the forecast for today, but it doesn't look like it is going to happen. Not any time soon anyway. Maybe later again. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The Avalanche report below is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall, but I can only report 1cm. (Actually I measured 8mm, but adding in that sprinkling from the other day makes me feel good about declaring 1cm). Very (very) light snow has been falling as I put this report together, but you almost have to look hard to see it. So unless it changes it isn't the kind of snowfall that results in much. I really don't have much else to say this morning. So, until tomorrow... --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -8℃, 10cm snowfall with snowdrifts. Moiwa800m: -12℃, NNE5m/s, 17m/s at night making snowdrifts grow large. Annupuri1150m: -15℃, NE15m/s, 10cm snowfall with cornice and snowdrifts developing. Hirafu1250m: light dusts, strong wind at night. Coastal data: Benkei cape ESE6m/s, Kamui cape NNE2m/s, 1008hPa, 1.6m waves. Strong NE wind overnight with scarce snowfall, however made the cornices and snowdrifts grow drastically. The wind is calming down now. Peak gates are scheduled to open, please follow the patrol’s instructions. Snowdrifts have developed in leeward slopes due to the strong NE wind. This new deposit can easily slide from Feb 6th layer and the avalanche risk is high. Hardpack wind-affected snow slabs in high elevation slopes, such as the Backbowl’s sidewalls, could easily slide with riding stimulation. A falling cornice triggered an avalanche near Annupuri Gate 2 this morning and buried a snow cat. The crown measured 60cm. Many of the past avalanche accidents in Niseko occurred just after strong winds and been caused by sliding slabs that developed under windy conditions. Leeward slopes with heavy load of dense wind-affected snow are very likely to slide. Do not stimulate cornices and snowdrifts and stay away from valley bottoms. The snow in the trees is in pretty good shape. Beware of falling into cracks and sudden weather changes. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Yesterday was a day of cloud and snow. Not a huge amount falling but some tracks being filled in and nice conditions out. This morning here's how much fresh snow the ski resorts are reporting: Happo-one: 10cm (gondola top station) Hakuba 47: 5cm during the day reported; up to 10cm overnight Hakuba Goryu: up to 5cm Hakuba Cortina: 1cm And the sun is out. There is lots of blue sky with cloud hanging around the mountains - see the photo below to get an idea of how things are looking at 8:30am. It looks like there are some fairly strong winds up there too with top lifts at Happo affected by wind at the time of writing and other possible lift delays at other resorts. The forecast shows the chance of some more snow later on; for now though, a very fine morning. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There was just a light dusting of new snow overnight but the trickle has continued and the total build up in the village is 3cm. We can expect the constant light snow to continue throughout the remainder of the week. Early morning the upper part of the resort was shrouded in cloud but that lifted to reveal a partially sunny day. While it is cold today those direct sunlight rays did prove enough to melt a little of the ice on the roads. Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. After all that snow to play in yesterday, we got some more fresh overnight... I feel that we have seen a lot of the 'snow overnight and fine in the day' pattern this season. (And I like it!) It was snowing pretty heavily at times, but in the end probably generally around 10-15cm. The sun is out now though and some blue skies again. It should be another excellent morning. The forecast is looking interesting. More clear weather towards the end of the week and then some heavy snow by the weekend. Areas lower down look set to get some rain, though we should avoid that clicking straight into the snow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The sun is out! I thought it might be snowing this morning, but the light snow overnight has eased off and clouds have mostly cleared - other than some low cloud remaining - and the sun is shining down on us. The resort is reporting 10-15cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes and up to 5cm in lower areas. Forecasts seem to be saying different things and I'm certainly no expert (no chuckling please). So I'm going to sit tight and see what develops. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I had a top day yesterday finding myself some very fine snow. I'm not telling you where; you'll have to check yourself. It was continuing to snow and not much of a wind. And this morning this is how much snow the resorts are reporting: Hakuba Cortina: 18cm at base; 20+cm up top Hakuba Happo-one: 15cm (top gondola station) Hakuba Goryu: 5-10cm Hakuba 47: 5-10cm 47 reporting 10cm of snow overnight on upper slopes and 'not as much as they thought' - I'm a bit surprised myself, but still, conditions should be very agreeable this morning. So we're expecting continued snow today into tomorrow. Sun is currently forecast around Friday and then some good-looking potentially heavy snow over the weekend. Though without wanting to spoil the excitement there seems to be a chance of a warm up and rain on Saturday before it turns into snow. Noooooooooooooo! Let's deal with that when we get to it, but keep it in mind. In the meantime, wrap up well and have fun today. Varying reports from around the area this morning... the official site is saying 50cm of fresh, Kumanoyu are reporting 30-50cm, my friends are reporting 32cm and 45cm. And I am measuring just slightly over 40cm. So hopefully you can get a good idea of what to expect this morning... lots of fresh snow to play in! What's more, the sun is out at the moment! Folk who are sticking around for this morning are in for a treat. But don't worry, snow is due later on today again so there should be fresh to enjoy tomorrow too. Excellent.
