- Niseko Now: Friday 30th March 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1247cm Posted on Friday 30th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's Friday. And it a mild morning. Beautiful too with lots of blue sky and sunshine, with quite a few pretty white clouds dotted around the skies too. It is going to be a fine day. I noticed on the news last night that Hokkaido (in general) was experiencing 'summer like' temperatures yesterday - one town (apologies, I did not catch the name) was apparently up to 20 degrees C, something that is more usual for July. I will post my recap of March and the season so far early next week. It looks like we are going to be ending the month with 49cm of observed snowfall here at base for the month. That is easily the lowest number that I have recorded in the month of March over the last six seasons. Anyway, more comment on all that early next week. There is just over 5 more weeks to go in the 2017-2018 season here in Niseko. March may not have delivered us lots of fresh snowfall, but we still have loads of snow on the mountain - Hirafu are still reporting almost 4.5m of the stuff on upper slopes! with some of the ski lifts planning to be operating daily until Sunday 6th May. --- Friday 30th March 2018 Resort specific information (operations subject to change): Niseko Grand Hirafu Plans to be open daily until Sunday 6th May Niseko HANAZONO Resort Plans to be open daily until Sunday 8th April Lifts info: - King Number 1 and 2 and Ace Number 4 lifts rested. - Other lifts should be operating. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 699cm Posted on Saturday 24th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Some fresh snow being reported by the resort on upper slopes again during the day yesterday, and that may well be the last of it for this season as we have a run of clear and sunny days lined up over the coming week. Warmth too particularly mid week. There's an early morning low 'sea of clouds' hanging over the valley but that should be gone pretty soon and making way for clear skies and a high temperature of around 8C at base later in the day. Time to fully accept spring, embrace it and have some fun in what we have left. Which is still over 2.5m of snow depth on the upper courses of the resort. How about that then! - Niseko Now: Friday 23rd March 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1247cm Posted on Friday 23rd March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There is no fresh snowfall to report and we start with a mild morning. The sun is out, some high thin cloud and it is probably going to be a fine day. And indeed, a fine run of days ahead with lots of sun forecast well into next week along with temperatures gradually rising (and possibly approaching mid-teens mid week). Full on spring. --- Not sure why, but my report got a massive amount of traffic/visitors yesterday - like, well over 10 times more than expected for this time of year. I wonder why. Perhaps a 'link in' from a major website or something. Anyway, if you are new here... haro! If you want to check out how the season has been here in Niseko, do look down at the bottom of this page to get to all the archive reports and of course you can also check that lovely blue tab near the top of the page that says 'Snowfall Analysis'. --- Last Avalanche Report of the season today. And I would like to extend my own big thank you and hearty 'otsukaresama deshita' to the very good folk involved in providing this important information. Here it is... Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -1℃, no snowfall, clear sky. Moiwa 800m: -3.5℃, N5.7m/s, no snowfall. Annupuri 1150m: -5℃, W5m/s, 440cm snowpack at 1000m. Hirafu peak: -1℃, light breeze, no snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape ENE6m/s, Kamui cape ENE3m/s, 1009hPa, 2.0m waves. That’s a wrap for this season’s avalanche information. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the making of the daily report and everyone who has been trusting in the information for their mountain safety. Our only hope is that the season would end safely without any accidents. Still a lot of snow on the slopes, enjoy the Spring conditions and have a great end of the season. --- Friday 23rd March 2018 Resort specific information (operations subject to change): Niseko Grand Hirafu & Niseko HANAZONO Resort Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating as planned (King Number 2 lift not operating) Official snow depth: - Top: 460cm - Base: 190cm Niseko Annupuri Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating as planned Official snow depth: - Top: 440cm - Base: 190cm Niseko Village Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating as planned (Country Road Chair lift not operating) Official snow depth: - Top: 410cm - Base: 190cm Niseko Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Friday 23rd March 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 1247cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 96 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (31st December) November 2017 snowfall 188cm reported on 11 days December 2017 snowfall 406cm reported on 27 days January 2018 snowfall 305cm reported on 26 days February 2018 snowfall 299cm reported on 24 days March 2018 snowfall 49cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. - Hakuba Now: Thursday 22nd March 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 527cm Posted on Thursday 22nd March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. I have some exciting news this morning. After snow starting to fall yesterday, there are some very interesting fresh snowfall numbers from the ski resorts. And here they are: Hakuba Goryu: 5cm (base); 30cm (top) Hakuba 47: up to 20cm Hakuba Happo-one: 20-25cm Hakuba Cortina 0-2cm Rather curious to see the numbers from Cortina there... especially as the 'official snow depth' at Tsugaike Kogen has risen from 285cm to 330cm in one day! Whatever the numbers, it would seem that there is a decent amount of fresh snow up there on the mountain this morning and most definitely worth checking out. Very nice surprise. The less good news is that it will probably be windy later on today higher up, and rain is spoiling it somewhat at lower elevations. So it's an oddly mixed condition report this morning but I am personally going to get kitted up and check out the new snow. Perhaps some more snow by tomorrow morning but after that we have a run of sunshine and warmer temperatures early next week. ----- Hakuba Happo-one Operating lifts: - All lifts appear to be operating Courses open: - All areas open as planned Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 360cm - Usagidaira: 245cm - Lower: 60cm ----- Hakuba Goryu Operating lifts: - All lifts should be operation as normal today Courses open: - All courses should be open as normal (apart from Adventure) Official snow depth: - Top: 330cm - Toomi: 110cm - Iimori: 80cm ----- Hakuba 47 Operating lifts: - All lifts should be operation as normal today - Line D usually operates only when the Gondola is not operating Courses open: - All main courses should be available Official snow depth: - Top: 330cm - Base: 115cm ----- Tsugaike Kogen Operating lifts: - All lifts should be operating as normal Courses open: - All course areas are open Official snow depth: - Tsuga-no-mori: 330cm - Han-no-ki: 290cm - Maruyama: 75cm - Shirakaba: 235cm - Champion: 90cm - Oya-no-hara: 105cm - Kane-no-naru-oka: 70cm ----- Hakuba Cortina Operating lifts: - Some lifts may be affected by wind today Courses open: - Some courses closed or on hold Official snow depth: - Top: 255cm - Base: 130cm ----- Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Operatings: - Resort remains part open Official snow depth: - Top: 180cm - Base: 50cm ----- Hakuba Norikura Onsen Operating lifts: - All lifts apart from Number 1 and 7 should be operating Official snow depth: - 120cm ----- Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Operating lifts: - All lifts apart from Number 8 and 10 should be operating Official snow depth: - 120cm ----- Hakuba Sanosaka Operating lifts: - All three lifts are operating - Last day of the season planned as 25th March Official snow depth: - 85cm Hakuba Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Thursday 22nd March 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 527cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 58 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 42cm (25th January) November 2017 snowfall 47cm reported on 5 days December 2017 snowfall 158cm reported on 15 days January 2018 snowfall 202cm reported on 18 days February 2018 snowfall 103cm reported on 15 days March 2018 snowfall 17cm reported on 5 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1247cm Posted on Saturday 17th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning all. And there's some more fresh snow for me to report this morning. 5cm of it in fact here near base and no doubt more than that at higher elevations on the mountain. I wonder how much. Investigations are required. It does feel rather more wintery and it is generally a cold and cloudy start to the day. Temperatures are forecast to not quite rise to zero during the day. Perhaps a little milder tomorrow and more sunshine. There are just two more days of night time skiing operations left now - today and tomorrow. Rasuto chansu! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -7℃, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8.3℃, WSW7m/s, 20cm snowfall, light snowdrifts. Annupuri 1150m: -10℃, W10m/s, 15cm snowfall. 440cm snowpack at 1000m elevation. Hirafu peak: -10℃, W5m/s, 10cm snowfall. Benkei cape: NNW11m/s, Kamui cape W9m/s, 1024hPa, 1.0m waves. The isobars gradient became a little steep during the night and generated 15-20cm new snow fall overnight. Snowdrift development is small, wet snow through to 20cm. The surface below 800m is frozen and the groomers are having a hard time maintaining the slopes. So called “potato fields” are present in many spots. 30cm of smaller wet surface slab slides are to be expected in leeward knolls and steep slopes above 900m. Better not stimulate knolls and cornices. Decent snowfall since a while, the mountain is back to winter. Peak gates are expected to open. Listen to patrol’s advices, be prepared and step out of bounds from the gates. Beware of creeks, holes and cracks. Stay away from valley bottoms and in order to avoid glide avalanches. Quickly move away from steep slopes. No chances to outrun an avalanche. Avalanches are naturally happening, and would not be a problem as long as nobody is caught in one. The is not bad. There's some snow on the forecast too on and off in the coming days, so fingers crossed! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -3℃, 5cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -5.5℃, WNW7.9m/s. Annupuri1150m: -7℃, N5m/s, 3cm snowfall, wet snow below 1000m. Hirafu peak: -6℃, 5cm snowfall. Benkei cape NNE13m/s, Kamui cape ENE3m/s, 1012hPa, 2.3m waves. 3-5cm new snow is blanketing the mountain. 20cm snowdrift just below ridgeline in 800m western area leeward slopes. Surface slab avalanche risk is moderately high in slopes above 900m. Caution is required in open steep slopes. New snow is pretty good but shallow, beware of overspeeding, falling into cracks and hitting trees. All gates are expected to open. Glide avalanche from 1000m upper cornice/snowdrift slopes are to be highly expected. Drastic changes in temperature can also trigger those slides. Stay away from valley bottoms. There are no chances to override a glide avalanche. Creeks are also swelling with the snowmelt. Falling from snowbridges could easily lead to crucial situation. Cross valley/creeks carefully. This information is issued for the safety of all resort users.
