We had some clearer skies very early on this morning, but there is lots of cloud around now and that seems to be what we are expecting for the day. The region looks set to enjoy some clearer and sunny skies during the day tomorrow. Mid week some milder conditions are likely and rain lower down in the valleys but while it might not be as cold we should be getting snowed on. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Some fresh snow to report this morning - the resort is saying 5cm across the mountain - though it isn't snowing now and is generally cloudy. It looks like the forecast for tomorrow is sun from the start of the day, so it should be a good one. Beyond that, hmmm, not so much snow and around Wednesday the freezing line goes up and rain looks likely. Beady eye on that + hopefully it'll adjust. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Apparently, today is 'Snow Day'. I must admit, I don't know what that means and have not had the chance to look into it. It would be a perfect day then to report a foot or so of snow; here's how much is actually being reported: Hakuba Goryu: 2cm up top Hakuba Cortina: 5-10cm I can just about add 1cm to the reports from base. So not a whole lot but it was snowing during the morning - and quite heavily with nice big flakes at times - while I was up at Hakuba 47. Less wind this morning than yesterday and improved visibility. Sunshine is likely tomorrow and a few days of generally milder temperatures. Watch out for rain around mid-week at base which will - all being well - turn into snow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, this morning I have 8cm of fresh snowfall to report to you, mostly from overnight. I believe that takes me to 269cm for the month - would be nice if we could get that up to 3m. (Just for the fun of it; and fresh snow is always fun). But it's not looking like we can expect significant snowfall over the coming few days, more like some regular light snowfall. Let's see. As you can see from the third image below looking towards Mt Yotei (which is just to the south of the ski resort bases), it's quite bright looking towards the east though currently we can't see the beautiful mountain from there. And it is generally cloudy here at base now. The Chinese New Year holiday peak-peak period is now behind us and while Niseko of course remains busy, things are going to start settling into the next phase of the season from this week as we enter March. Remember, the lifts (* not all of them) move right through until Golden Week in early May. So I have a lot more reports to write! And I will of course let you know the spring plans at a later day. I don't like talking about spring. So let's not! :) --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 5.00am: -10°, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: -12.2°, WSW14.6m/s, trace new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -14°, W15m/s, 10cm new snow, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -17°, trace new snow, strong intermittent westerly wind, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW14m/s. Kamui Cape: W10m/s, 1024hPa, wave 2.1m. From this mornings observation the general avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Prepare before going out of bounds. Take care around new cornices, they are fragile and will break easily. Although only a little snow has fallen, leeward slopes are reset and snow is good in the forests. Is your beacon switched on? Probe and shovel? Do you have a map? Be careful of falling into creeks, the water is cold. Also be careful of falling into cracks, they are everywhere and deep. Always make cautious decisions when out of bounds. Don't duck ropes to enter strictly off limits areas like Haru no Taki. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Yesterday things went a bit tropical and temperatures pushed through to +2c during the day. This was evident by the heavier snow on the lower slopes and plenty of melt around town on the roads. Today is cooler and it is -6c right now, and will top out at-3c. The really good news is there has been a substantial amount of overnight snow that amounts to a very respectable 19cm. It will be a great powder day all over the mountain. While there is no wind, the cloud is right down to base level, so visibility will be limited until that cloud lifts. Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open. It was snowing by the time those Taiko drums got going during the Fire Festival last night and this morning just a little snow being reported by the resorts: Hakuba Cortina: 2-3cm Happo-one: 1cm It has started snowing again this morning and there is a few cm on the ground to report. It's going to be a little warmer today so expect snow conditions to match. The Chinese New Year holidays have passed now and we are in the last weekend of February. Regular as clockwork, once we get into March we'll start hearing mention of 'spring' and less people will be inclined to ski --- many times, regardless of the weather and snow conditions. March can definitely deliver - so let's hope March 2018 does just that! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just a little fresh snow to report this morning though I expect you'll see differences due to the strong winds overnight blowing it all about (example, check out the Avalanche report saying there's 40cm of wind blown snow over at Moiwa). Take care out there especially as that wind will have gone some way to sculpting the mountain to a new shape! Less wind this morning and lifts appear to be moving as planned at the start of the day. It is snowing lightly at the moment though it is fairly bright and visibility looks pretty decent. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 5.00am: -5°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -11°, NW7.1m/s, cornice and snowdrift development until early morning, 40cm wind blown snow. Annupuri 1150m: -11°, W11m/s, trace new snow, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -11°, NW15m/s, trace new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW11m/s. Kamui Cape: W11m/s, 1019hPa, wave 2.8m. A strong southerly wind picked up with the passing of a low pressure system, then from midnight till dawn a strong north westerly blew bring snowdrift and cornice development through wind blown snow. Avalanche risk on leeward slopes above 800m is high this morning. Although the amount of new snow is small, snowdrifts from the low pressure snowfall are easily collapsing. On slopes where new snowdrift growth has occurred be careful of shallow surface avalanches. From tests, fracture face is 23rd Feb low pressure layer. Cornices are fracturing with very little stimulation, keep well back from the edge. All peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Prepare before going out of bounds. The mountain has been savaged by the wind and in rough condition. Be careful riding. Do not cut under cornices and knolls. Today’s snowdrifts will easily fracture. Beacons switched on? Got your probe and shovel? Moiwa Quad lift is still broken but expected to be running by tomorrow. Gate 6 will be closed and there is no access from ski area to Mikaeri/Goshiki area. A change in atmospheric pressure can be violent and the change in weather quick. Beware of strong winds and frostbite above the tree line. Visibility is poor. Take care. Being aware can prevent most accidents. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba! It's a bright and sunny start in the Mikuni valley today. We can expect a clear day today, with possible cloud pushing in later bringing some snow showers. The air temperature will remain around 0°C today, keeping the snow and the pistes in good condition today, especially with the 11cm of fresh snow that accumulated last night. There will be a light wind later in the day. Looking forwards, tomorrow we can expect another sunny day, however the wind will pick up moderately and there is a chance of some snow overnight. Daytime temperatures throughout the week will remain above 0°C with sunny, spring-like days mixed with snow showers. Next Wednesday is the most notable day in the forecast currently, with temperatures expected to push up as high as 5°C. This may give way to some rain on Wednesday night. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is good news on the snow front with a further 6cm falling overnight. It is snowing moderately now, so more accumulation of snow is to be expected during the day. The cloud is quite low at the moment which means that there will be varied vis on mountain with low light in places. This may improve soon though. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning all you Niseko fans wanting to know just how much snow I have to report this morning. Drum roll... 17cm. And because this has all been delivered from late last night - after a bit of sunshine yesterday! - that means that there'll be a nice new fresh layer for everyone to play in this morning. I expect the first lifts to be particularly popular this morning. It is not actually snowing as I write my report this morning, for a change. Just cloudy with a bit of sun peeking through in places. Perhaps my mentioning the lack of sunshine is bringing it out. (I may have that power, it seems). But seriously, a mix of lots of quality fresh snow and some sunshine - what could be better than that? It is not quite as cold this morning but temperatures should remain in minus numbers through the day. Not much wind and so we should expect lifts and gates to be open as planned. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -5°, 10cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -6.4°, E0.5m/s, 20cm new snow, calm. Annupuri 1150m: -8°, light wind, 10cm new snow. Hirafu 1250m: -10°, light wind, calm, 15cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: S4m/s. Kamui Cape: SE2m/s, 1016hPa, wave 0.5m. The sea and mountains are both calm. The mountain has a thin cover of good quality pre-low pressure snowfall. No notable cornice or snowdrift development. From observation the general avalanche risk is low. Be careful today on steep slopes, flowing shallow surface avalanches occur easily with this type of snow. Although yesterdays tracks are not covered, snow condition is good. Peak gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before going out of bounds. The current snow surface is expected to become a fracture face in the future snowpack. This 22-23rd layer has a large temperature gradient and frost within. Deeper layers are stable however there is possibility of avalanches on steep north facing slopes (inconsistent snowdrift development) from 21st Feb layer. Moiwa quad lift is broken so cannot ride Mikaeri area, should be good snow when its fixed! The heavy snowfall this winter is causing many cracks to open on leeward slopes. Be careful they cannot be seen from above. Entering March the risk of full depth avalanche at Kozan no sawa 1100m and Osawa cornice slope is rapidly increasing. Think about whether your habit of riding back to the ski area in the valley bottom is worth getting taken out by a massive tree, rock and mud laden avalanche. Guides and experienced riders especially should reconsider taking beginners these routes. The weather is expected to deteriorate this afternoon. Be careful of change in weather, bad visibility and strong winds. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . It's a crisp, icy start today. Temperatures dropped to -12°C overnight last night, meaning that even the water in the carparks is in a deep freeze! The sky is blue and the sun is just breaking over the top of the mountains. The air temperature is expected to rise rapidly once the sun is fully in the valley. The pistes are crunchy with the fresh snow from yesterday, and well-groomed. The remainder of the day will be bright and warm, with little wind to concern us. There is a chance some cloud will push in later in the evening, depositing some snow overnight tonight, however accumulations will be modest. Looking forwards, we can expect a relatively warmer week, with much more Spring-like conditions. Little snow is forecast now through until Tuesday, however the wind is likely to pick up a little and blow some clouds through on Saturday. Daytime air temperatures are likely to remain above 0°C for the week. It looks as though Spring is starting to get fired up! Just a dusting of snow really since yesterday, and sunshine is making for a lovely bright start to the day. The pattern we have seen of (some) snow overnight and fine weather in the morning is one we have seen a lot this season. And it's a pretty good pattern I feel. Seems like it might continue. Fantastic morning to be out on the slopes.
