Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 3cm
Snowfall at base this season 697cm

Posted on Friday 2nd March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here.

Morning from Nozawa.

The good news is that it is colder today and there is actually some fresh snow on the ground this morning - the ski resort is reporting 3-5cm across the mountain and I also measured 3cm.

Strong winds are still with us though and affecting the top lifts of the resort.

At the time of this report going up, the following lifts are not operating due to strong winds:

- Nagasaka Gondola

- Yamabiko lifts

- Uenotaira quad

- Skyline connecting pair

Hopefully things will start calming down during the day today and they might get going.

By tomorrow morning things should be looking rather different. The sun should be out and it will be calmer. And warmer once again. It looks like it is going to be a very spring-like weekend with temperatures rising into low-mid teens. Thankfully we're looking at a drop in the temps again from Monday and while we might get some more rain it should be turning into snow.

Phew!

Fresh snowfall since yesterday (as reported by the resort):

- Yamabiko (1407m): 5cm

- Uenotaira (1230m): 3cm

- Hikage (660m): 3cm

- Nagasaka (615m): 5cm

- Karasawa (563m): 3cm

Official snow depth numbers:

- Yamabiko (1407m): 320cm

- Uenotaira (1230m): 255cm

- Hikage (660m): 175cm

- Nagasaka (615m): 170cm

- Karasawa (563m): 135cm

Lifts operations:

- Top lifts on hold due to weather conditions at the start of the day

- The Yunomine pair, Mizunashi triple, Challenge pair and Utopia pair lifts usually rested on weekdays.

The following courses either closed (or not fully available):

- Grand Prix

- Kandahar
