Lightly in the morning with some wind blowing around lunchtime and the snow starting to build up in places pretty quickly. The wind didn't last too long but the snow continued leaving us with a fairly calm evening. This morning there is 22cm of fresh snow on the ground and it is cloudy with a moderate wind. There's a bit of sun shining through the clouds in places. Good news for tree run area fans - the Summit and Shooter areas should be opening from Saturday (12th January). Looking forward to that. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Heavy snow alert! Heavy, as in falling quickly and building up. Light, as in light and fluffy. That's what we like to hear! The resort is mentioning more than 60cm of snowfall on their social media this morning; the official resort report is saying 40cm, so not sure what's going on there. I am indeed measuring 60cm (plus or minus in a few different areas) - a bit of wind has made measuring rather difficult this morning. I think that is a fair representation of what we have got though. Madarao are also reporting a bit of congestion on the road coming up here and the likelihood of some delays with lifts opening as they cope with all this snow. Visibility is very limited too. So it's not everyone's idea of a great day to be on the slopes.... But it is one of the better kinds of problems to have to deal with! And tomorrow the sun should be out giving us a potentially amazing day. And I don't over-use such comments as you no doubt know. Hope some of you can be here to enjoy it. ----- The Madarao Kogen Fire Festival is on Saturday 12th January. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A very good morning to you from Hakuba. Now this is what we want. Heavy snowfall with some resorts reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall. I like the sound of that. First off, the headlines and what the ski resorts are reporting: Hakuba Cortina: 50cm (base); 50+cm (top) Hakuba Happo-one: 30cm (top of Riesen quad) Hakuba 47: 30-35cm Hakuba Goryu: 15-20cm Tsugaike: they don't give out numbers, but they are adding 50cm to the snow depth of top areas Some lifts may well be affected by the current conditions so I advise checking before going. The only thing I can find right now is that Cortina is only part open and some lifts affected at Tsugaike and Goryu. But others appear to be open. Limited visibility. Heavy snowfall. Extra care needed. Be careful out there. Tomorrow should be both calmer and clearer. In fact, perhaps a perfect day to be out on the slopes. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another 20cm to report to you this morning measured from just outside my top secret lair close to Hirafu base area. Pesky strong winds were messing with a few top lifts in the middle of the day yesterday. The good part of that is that today if everywhere is open - which seems to be the case at the start of the day - there should be some fine untracked snow up there to enjoy. For the first time in a while, forecasts don't show that much snow in the upcoming week. There might even be more sunny conditions than whiteout snowy ones. Some people will be happy with that. All was ask is for some regular top-ups in between the nice weather, and hopefully temps will remain low. Doesn't look like there's much to worry about on that score. Let's enjoying! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -7℃, light storm, 25cm snowfall in 24 hours. Moiwa 800m: -10.3℃, W13.7m/s, snowdrifts and cornices are developing. Mikaeri: no data. Hirafu peak: -14℃, N18m/s, 25cm snow in 24 hours with 50cm snowdrifts. Mizuno no sawa: -12.5℃, NNW5.5m/s. Kutchan weather station: -5.4℃, snow depth 138cm. Coastal data Benkei cape: N14m/s, Kamui cape N10m/s, 1013hPa, 2.3m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is getting steeper and mountains are in a stormy condition. The cornices have developed up to 100cm in 24hours, snowdrifts are drastically accumulating in leeward slopes. Cornices are very unstable and snowdrifts will crack very rapidly. The avalanche risk in leeward slopes above 800m is very high today. Peak gates will be closed. Do not cross ropes to step out of bounds. The snow in the tree runs under 800m is good, however it is strongly recommended not venture out too far from the ski resorts today. Stay out of strictly off limits areas. It looks like clearer skies might happen at the moment, but even if that happens it isn't going to be lasting for long with snow due particularly later on in the day - and that heavy snowfall that we are expecting tonight (looks like it is really going to be coming down in style overnight). I feel like I have written this before but here goes.. it was snowing during the day yesterday and this morning - yes, it is snowing. Perhaps we might have expected more than the 6cm that I am able to report. The New Year holidays are over and as we get back to normal weekdays, there's much fewer people around. Weekdays are great if you can manage to be here for them. Highly recommended. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a jolly good morning it is too. How does 24cm of fresh snowfall sound? Good, right? Some heavy snowfall overnight with lovely light snow on the ground greeting us this early morning. Wonderful. Conditions should be excellent this morning. We can reasonably expect 30-40cm of beautiful light fresh snow on the mountain this morning. I'm full of my fave toast and am ready to get myself out there to enjoy it once I post this report. Snow will probably continue falling during the day today and tonight, perhaps letting up by tomorrow. There's not much of a wind but visibility is looking limited. Currently the forecast seems to be showing a good chance of some clearer skies and sunshine over the weekend which will make for a change. I see a rather... interesting... last comment there on the Avalanche Report today (below). I think a very clear point is trying to be made there! It is totally natural to get very excited about such conditions, but let's remembering: Safety first. Moiwa 800m: -8.8°, SW4.9m/s, snow drift development, 40cm new snow, calm. Mikaeri Weather Station: light winds, 30cm new snow in last 24hrs. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 175cm. Hirafu Peak : -14°, SW10m/s, 30cm new snow in last 24hrs, snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa 1000m: -10.9° , 25 cm new snow in last 24hrs, snowpack 140cm. Kutchan Weather Station: -6.2°, snow depth 135cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW13m/s. Kamui Cape: SW14m/s, 1011hPa, wave 1.2m. A light snow wind is blowing above 800m with continued snowdrift development. From tests cornices are collapsing easily with fracture at 40cm depth. Snow today is very good. From observation and data, general avalanche risk is low, however on steep slopes similar to Kozan no sawa sidewall it is possible to stimulate an avalanche from rider weight. If an avalanche propagates from the deeper Jan 5th layer, rather than the higher Jan 7th layer, it will be a very dangerous surface avalanche. Do not wait in the valley bottom. Do not enter Haru no Taki. If you are that desperate for some steeps, go ride in an Alaska extreme competition. You'll be crying like a little girl standing at the top of a “real” big man mountain. Air bags don't always save you. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba. Another 7cm of snow to report this morning with snow until earlier on - but it is clearer now mid morning. There's a chance of some more light snow today and tomorrow and then heavier come tomorrow night and through the day on Wednesday. We're back to normal weekdays now - some lifts are rested but open terrain remains the same. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Yesterday afternoon and evening there was a significant snow front come through and it has deposited 11cm of powder at village level. Today is cloudy and it looks likely that we won't see the sun make an appearance. It is cold out there at -15c but will warm up a bit by mid morning. Needless to say there will be fantastic skiing all over the mountain with the nice topping up of new snow. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao Onsen. A nice 10+cm of fresh snow on the ground with continued limited visibility on the mountain this morning. We're not getting much clear sky weather this season so far! (As long as it is snowing when visibility is poor!) More snow is on the way tomorrow especially but beyond that we can perhaps look forward to some clearer skies towards the end of the week.
