Not huge amounts but it is a start on the road back to a fresh reset and I can report just over 5cm; there should be more than that at higher elevations. Snow is falling and there is limited visibility up there too but all seems open as planned this morning. We might enjoy some clearer conditions and blue skies this afternoon. More snow is forecast for tomorrow along with stronger winds and then again around Sunday. Just how much we will get... we will have to sit tight and see what happens. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a bit drab looking outside compared to the beautiful clear days earlier in the week. There is low cloud cover this morning. It has been snowing overnight and the accumulation is an impressive 15cm. That new snow however is wet and pretty heavy compared to what normally falls at this time of year. The snow has stopped for now but light snow is forecast during the day. The wind is moderate and it will be reasonably windy through until Friday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . There might be a few sore heads in Nozawa this morning after the main event of the Fire Festival last night. After a spell of no fresh, there is some fresh snow this morning. Not much with the resort reporting 5cm up on the top areas, but it is continuing to come down and we can expect some more this morning and then all being well a decent amount tomorrow night too. Oh yes and on Sunday. So regular snowfall is just ahead of us which is great to see. The resort does not seem to be recording any snowfall this morning but I definitely just cleared at least a few cm up outside my place just before. Visibility looking limited on the mountain this morning but I doubt people will be too worried about that. Snow is what we want most. Have a safe day. Someone I know is telling people this morning that there is up to 30cm of fresh snow out there this morning. Seriously? Which Shiga Kogen is that dude in? I just cannot see that being the case, even if wind is a factor. Kumanoyu are reporting 2cm. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 5cm. Variations across the wide Shiga Kogen region? Absolutely. But up to 30cm!? The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello and a good morning to you from Hakuba. I was up at 47 yesterday afternoon for a few hours. Weather was cloudy, it felt fairly mild at base but a colder wind blowing up there. Some fresh snow is what we want now and this morning there is some. The headlines... Hakuba Goryu - 5cm Hakuba 47 - 10-15cm on upper slopes Hakuba Cortina - 10cm base, bit more on upper areas Hakuba Happo-one - 7cm at top of Riesen lift And I am measuring 5cm. It is still snowing and hopefully we will get more today - and some fairly regular snowfall through Sunday as well with perhaps a break in the clouds on Saturday. We could do with some of the heavy snow that some forecasts are saying will be with us tomorrow night. That would be most welcome. There is a bit of a northerly wind this morning and visibility is poor on the mountain in all areas by the looks of the webcams. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Had some early toast this morning before going out for a quick walk around Hirafu base area. It is nice to have some lovely fresh snow on the ground this morning. I am measuring 11cm, so it is not a huge amount but more is on the way. Wind is almost definitely going to be an issue in the coming days with tomorrow looking like it will be full on blizzard conditions. To what extent it will affect lifts - we will just have to wait and see. There are lots of people lining up early for first lifts this morning to get some early first tracks in on the fresh snow as you can see on the webcam images below. It looks like all resort areas are opening as planned at the start of the day today. Have fun. And be sure to be strapped in for tomorrow! The Free Ride Park at Hirafu will be closed today for layout maintenance. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: 15cm snowfall in 24hours. Moiwa 800m: -9.1℃, W6m/s. Mikaeri junction: NW8m/s, large development of snowdrifts from southerly wind. Annupuri 1150m: -12℃, NW15m/s, stormy. 1120m snow depth 185cm. Mizuno no sawa: -5℃, 13cm snowdrifts in 24hours. Hirafu peak: -11℃, strong NW wind, snow storm. Suttsu weather station: -3.2℃, NW15.2m/s, Kutchan: -4.6℃, 118cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NNW17m/s, Kamui cape: WNW14m/s, 1007hPa, 3.5m waves. A north westerly storm has picked up as the low-pressure system moved east, making cornices and snowdrifts develop in leeward slopes above 1000m. The low-pressure left 20cm of snow overnight. Loose snow avalanches are to be expected in 30°treerun slopes. Jan 15th layer is present under the low-pressure snowfall and an uneven (Jan 16th) layer with a large temperature difference between yesterday’s and today’s snow has formed. Both are weak hoar layers. The storm is forecasted to pick up, making cornices and snowdrifts develop drastically. The avalanche risk is high and will stay high through tomorrow. Better not go near cornice slopes today. Especially the O-sawa (annupuri bowl) cornice slopes. Traversing under cornices can easily trigger a slide. All gates opening is undecided, please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The snow in the trees is a little dense and good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here What a fine day it was yesterday with lovely blue skies and sunshine for lots of main daytime - it certainly felt good to be out on the mountain. This morning I can just about manage to report 1cm of fresh snowfall on the ground. (Actually slightly under 1cm, so I will make a note of my wildly out-of-control 'over-reporting' of a mm or so for a future report. No need to fret, it will balance out). Perhaps we will get some more blue skies and sunshine today over the mountain. As I write this report there is still quite a lot of cloud around but also some blue sky and increasingly so. We are still expecting a return to meaningful snowfall from later on Tuesday and the second half of this week. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan - Coming of Age Day. And here is what Mr Wiki says about it, with thanks: "Coming of Age Day (成人の日) is a Japanese holiday held annually on the second Monday of January. It is held in order to congratulate and encourage all those who have reached or will reach the age of majority between April 2 of the previous year and April 1 of the current year, and to help them realize that they have become adults. Festivities include coming of age ceremonies (成人式 seijin-shiki) held at local and prefectural offices, as well as after-parties among family and friends." --- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, no new snow, calm. Hirafu Peak : -12°, Northerly 10m/s, snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: no new snow in last 24hrs, snowpack 118cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: ENE6m/s. Kamui Cape: SSW2m/s, 1023hPa, wave 1.3m. The cracks near Higashi One 1200m are starting to fill in. Bamboo poles and pink tape have been used to mark location. However take car not to fall in one. Depending on future snowfall transition, it is possible the area from the cracks to knoll could avalanche. Avoid riding on this slope. There are long cracks on West Ridge cornice around 1100m. A cornice collapsing could trigger on avalanche. Do not traverse under cornices or knolls on steep slopes or try to stimulate cornice to collapse. These actions have caused accidents in the past. Don't forget there can be lots of people in the valley below. The general avalanche risk is low. We can't predict everything that will happen in the mountains, however with care most accidents can be avoided. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before going out of the ski area. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There is a bit of a breeze out there this morning which may be a bit strong at certain places on the resort. A nice new dusting of 3cm has accumulated overnight and it is still snowing, although very lightly. While overcast at the moment I think there is a good chance some sun may break through later in the morning but we can't expect a day as stunning as it was yesterday. The snow clearing crew cleared the snowbanks of the main street of the resort yesterday making things feel very wide and spacious. Those banks will start to build up again over the next couple of weeks as winter roles on. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Here we are on a Saturday morning and the first day of the long weekend as Monday is a holiday in Japan, so we might expect to see a few more locals out and about this weekend (by 'locals', I mean Hokkaido folk. Lots of the immediate locals will be busy-busy!) A little snow to report this morning. I can just about justify recording 2cm so it's hardly enough to fully reset the mountain. And this is hardly important, but it seems a little odd that the top snow depth number for Niseko Annupuri has jumped by 25cm this morning. There certainly hasn't been that much snow up there since yesterday so perhaps they are playing catch up with the numbers (?) Anyway, quite a bit of cloud still around at the moment but some blue sky too. Calm conditions and the resorts including gates should be opening as normal this morning. The next snowfall is still expected around Tuesday. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -6℃, slight snowfall and calm. Moiwa800m: -8.2℃, W4.5m/s, no snowfall and small development of cornice/snowdrifts. Mikaeri data not available. Annupuri1120m snow depth: 185cm. Hirafu1300m: -11℃, N5-10m/s, snowdrifts development. Mizuno no sawa: -9.68℃, N3.8-8.4m/s, slight snowfall. Kutchan weather station: -4℃, 120cm snow depth. Benkei cape: N7m/s, Kamui cape: NNE3m/s, 1020hPa, 1.3m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the weather is calm at the ocean and mountains. There are nothing in particular to mention today. Beware of falling cornices and stay away from the bottom of the valley in order to avoid being caught in avalanches debris. The snow is light and dry. Always keep in mind that outside the gates is not the resort anymore. Ask the ski patrol some advice, respect the Niseko Rules and have a great day. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Some strong winds blowing around yesterday morning and the gondola as well as quad lift had to be halted. The Number 1 Gondola got moving from around noon. Cloudy skies until just before lunch and then snow started falling... fairly heavy (as in consistency) snow and it continued until evening. It was relatively mild. This morning I have 12cm to report and I think that's your lot for a few days -- clearer skies are likely over the weekend. Hopefully some more of those tree runs will be open as planned... Monday is a national holiday in Japan. Next snowfall due around Tuesday. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a very crisp Furano morning that has brought cold temperatures and clear skies. It is beautifully blue all above the resort and the morning sun is beaming down. Yesterday saw temperatures push above freezing and a bit of melt on the roads. However, overnight there has been 11cm of fresh powder which will mean great snow conditions through today. 11cm in the village will mean much more up on the resort. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Anyone else get to enjoy yesterday? I had a blast. Glad I wrapped up well, felt cold out there. This morning there's a bit more snow - Nozawa are reporting 15cm on the upper Yamabiko area, and varying less amounts in others. It is definitely not as cold as it was yesterday. Visibility looks very limited up top but perhaps that will clear. So we have a weekend just ahead of us. It's usually on of the busier ones. Peak season, of course. And also Monday is a national holiday in Japan, so it's a 3-day break for many people. Expect Nozawa to be busy. Weather should be generally fine with a good chance of sunshine (and very little chance of fresh snow). Sunscreen recommended as well as an early start to beat some of the crowds. Next snow? Look to late on Tuesday onwards.
