It could well be piling up very quickly. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here So yes, yesterday was rather wild. The bottom Hanazono quad lift got moving as did a few Jumbo lifts over at Annupuri, but lots of the lifts remained at a standstill as the wind blew. Thankfully, things are considerably calmer this morning. Phew! More snow surely fell from the skies, but that wind yesterday was blowing it about without any apparent concern for it's feelings and well being. And this morning I have just 7cm to measure - so that is what I can report. But a special mention that there will be more fluffy fresh out there this morning. The mountain should all be open today including gates and conditions should be truly excellent. That is why there are tons of people lined up waiting for those first lifts to move. Have a very fine day wherever you are. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -5°, trace new snow in last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -7.3°, WNW8.4m/s, 15cm in the last 12 hrs, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri Weather Station: -7°, complex snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snowpack 185cm. Hirafu Peak: -10°. Mizuno no Sawa: no data. Kutchan Weather Station: -4.1°, snow depth 161cm. Suttsu Weather Station: -0.9°, snowpack 49cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW11m/s. Kamui Cape: N11m/s, 1014hPa, wave 2.4m. Seas reached 8m but the storm is calming down now and wind speed around 1000m as dropped below 15m/s. From observation snowdrifts are starting to stabilise, however from tests snowdrifts are fracturing at 45cm depth, fracture surface is granular layer formed by wind direction and temperature gradient. General avalanche risk is falling. Around 1100m cornice growth has been extreme and there is possibility of a natural collapse. Do not spend time in the valley bottom. In the event of an avalanche it shouldn’t travel far but be will be highly destructive. Snow conditions are not good in Higashi One area due to the northerly wind. All peak gates are expected to open. Please follow the patrol's advice. Be prepared before entering the backcountry. Never traverse under cornices, this can easily trigger a surface avalanche. Snow is dense and heavy from the strong wind. Be careful hitting trees in the forest. The wind will continue through the morning. Fine weather in the morning yesterday but by evening it was snowing once again and quite heavily as the evening went on. Result: 34cm. And guess what... yes, it's still snowing and the forecast for today is snow at times and cloudy conditions, with cloud on the forecast currently for tomorrow. It's being blown around somewhat and conditions aren't for everyone (clearer sky lovers will have enjoyed yesterday morning), but we can't be complaining about snow. And looking towards Saturday is looking pretty exciting too. Heavy snowfall, says the forecasts. Just how much? Looking forward to finding out. If you do venture out, take care. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There has been a snowstorm overnight with moderate snowfall and strong winds. On the ground there is 14cm of fresh snow in the Kitanomine village. The temperatures are quite mild at -5c and this mean the fresh snow is a lot heavier than normal. The snow has stopped for now but moderate winds are still with us and are forecast to be around until tonight. A good dump of snow like this will help reset the off piste areas that have been tracked out recently. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from a very windy and blizzard like Shiga Kogen. It's some contrast to the lovely weather we enjoyed yesterday. Actually it seems to have calmed down somewhat since earlier on when there was snow blowing around and trees moving in the wind. It is one of those days when it is difficult to give a definitive number on fresh snowfall, but I think 25cm is fair for my report this morning. Visibility is generally limited still and so probably not very nice conditions for many to be outside just now. Some lifts affected as well by the windy conditions but generally most areas appear to be opening. There might be a let up tomorrow but Saturday looks like we're going to be slammed by a lot more snow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Getting on for 10am, it has been a busy morning... I am happy to report some more good snow numbers since it started snowing last night (and nice and heavily as well at times). First of all here is how much fresh snow that the ski resorts are reporting this morning: Hakuba 47: 10-15cm Hakuba Cortina: 20-30cm Hakuba Iwatake: 30cm up top Hakuba Happo-one: 30cm top of Riesen I can add 18cm to my report too. Light snow was falling earlier this morning outside my place. Right now there is snow falling in some areas but even a bit of sun breaking through clouds in others. Depends on which part of the region you find yourself though generally I would say it feels more likely to be the former of those two for the moment. We are expecting it to ease off later and for most of the day tomorrow, but look out for heavy snowfall from Friday night through Saturday. Could that bring us the heaviest of the season so far? It may well be the case. I say yes please! Wind is affecting some lifts this morning including the top lifts at Happo-one and the top part of the Gondola at Tsugaike Kogen. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Morning from Naeba. Another near on 25cm of fresh snow this morning which is good to see after that sunny day yesterday. And something of a change too. It is colder and windier and the current conditions are affecting what is open on the mountain this morning. The Dragondola is not open today as Tashiro is closed, and early on the Number 2 Gondola and top pair lifts are also on hold due to wind conditions. If the forecasts are right, be wary of Saturday. Looking like heavy snowfall and some potentially stormy conditions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a wild one and I am going to keep it short. 25cm of fresh snowfall. Blizzard conditions. Poor visibility. Loads of lifts affected with just base lifts opening at the start of the day (with the base lift at Hanazono also closed)... resort specific details adjusted below. Extra care is needed if you are venturing out - whether it is onto the slopes or just walking around by, or driving on, the roads. Perhaps these conditions will be appealing to some folk who are much more gnarly than yours truly, but I am definitely going to be sitting this one out. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -6.5°, 25cm new snow in last 12 hrs, blizzard conditions. Moiwa 800m: -8.9°, W10.3m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri Weather Station: NW15m/s, forest road groomed. Hirafu Peak: -12°, snow wind and bad visibility. Kutchan Weather Station: -4.4°, snow depth 156cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW22m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW20m/s, 1000hPa, wave 4.0m. There is a steep atmospheric pressure gradient bringing a strong northerly snow wind into Niseko. Snowdrifts are rapidly growing and cornices are easily fracturing on Jan 23rd (low pressure snowfall) layer. Avalanche risk is extremely high. Peak gates will be closed. There is possibility of a natural large scale avalanche from cornice collapse. Do not spend any time in the valley bottoms. Please be cautious on all nearby mountains. The snow in the trees is a little heavy but good. Do not duck ropes. Inexperienced riders following just one set of tracks can lead to an accident. Disregarding Niseko Rules can come back to bite you. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. Snow in the morning, with clearer skies starting to appear in the afternoon yesterday. Generally fairly calm. A bit more light snow overnight with 6cm of fresh to report to you this morning. It is a fine morning - some cloud around but blue sky too. There is a chance of some snow later on again though - it doesn't seem to ever be far away!
