The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Blimey, it was extremely cold just before when I went out to measure the snow. It was worth it though, with me measuring a good 21cm of fresh snowfall to start off the month of February. Looking like excellent quality snow too. And with more of it for sure out there at higher elevations, there's going to be some fun to have. But. We might not get to lots of it today. That's because the wind is blowing again and lifts are on hold at the start of the day. As I post this report all of the top lifts are not starting the day as planned, as well as the main gondola at Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri and a few more upper lifts. Perhaps a break in snow over the weekend but more snow is due early week onwards. Let's see how this wind situation shapes up. Conditions are likely going to be challenging today. If you are venturing out in such conditions, do take special care. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -10.5°, 15cm new snow in the last 12 hrs. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . A wind front arrived early this morning and it is gusting strongly around the town. It is snowing lightly but there is a lot of snow also being wind blown sideways. This wind is forecast to stay for the next few days. With these winds it is possible some lift operations may be suspended. The good news is there is 7cm of new powder to play in. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Back to snow! And on this last report of January I bring you news of 11cm of fresh snowfall at base up until 8am, bringing us up to a total of 285cm for the month and 702cm for the season so far - as observed by me. (More on that on Monday). Unfortunately wind is going to be an issue again today. At the start of the day all top lifts will be on hold as well as the gondolas at Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri. Others may also be affected so be aware of that. Sunday is looking likely to be unseasonably warm throughout Japan, though that still means that up here temps won't get much above zero. Hopefully. I'm going to put my neck out there and confidently say that it will almost definitely be colder than Australia. Hopefully we'll get more snow building up before that warmer bit. So tomorrow is February and the next big event in the season is the Chinese New Year holiday period that will soon be with us, so Niseko will continue to be busy-busy. Things start getting less frantic once we get into March but let's not wish away the days. Kamui Cape: WNW12m/s, pressure 1007hPa,wave 2.5m. We have strengthening high pressure west/low pressure east weather system bringing blizzard conditions at all levels including the mountain base. Above 800m snowdrifts are are rapidly developing on leeward slopes. From tests, the Jan 30th granular layer is fracturing at 40cm depth with the structurally unstable growth to continue. All peak gates will be closed. Do not duck ropes to go out of bounds. Surface avalanches easily occur during and right after blizzards. The avalanche risk is High at 900m SE facing slopes (below treeline) with todays heavy snowfall. Be careful Chisei/ Nitto puri. Snow is reset and good in the trees. Yesterday it was snow on and off, with a fairly strong wind at times which affected the quad lift (though the resort was also mentioning lots of snow as a reason for it stopping mid morning...) It's a cold start to the day today. Just 3cm of fresh snow to report, cloudy conditions with light snow and a light wind. Looks like we might get to see some clearer skies at times both today and tomorrow but light snow will also not get too far away. Already lots of blue sky higher up, and once the lower cloud clears up I think we are on for lots of sun. Sunscreen recommended. It's a cold start to the morning and if the forecasts are right it won't be getting too mild during the day. The resort is reporting up to 15cm of snow since yesterday morning with around 5cm on lower areas. Snow should be falling once again come tomorrow. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. It's cold, snowy and windy this morning with very poor visibility. That may not be everyone's idea of good weather to be outside, but once this clears up we should be on for a top day again tomorrow when some sunshine is due. So yes I am measuring well over 30cm of fresh snowfall on the ground and it is coming in now too - sideways - with the wind blowing it around. The Number 13 lift at Madarao is going to be opening late (planned) and the Number 3 lift closed. Take care out there. But wind is blowing it around and also more than likely going to be messing about with some lifts on the mountain. For those wanting to venture out in this. I think all but a few might decide to take a day off, perhaps take an onsen or something. A contrast to some of the blue skies we enjoyed yesterday and it may well also be a constrast to what we have tomorrow - chance of some sun. Before that more snow is due to be falling so conditions should be really great once the weather calms down.
