And then we have some fireworks once nighta is finished. The forecast seems to be showing us milder weather in the coming week with more snow than sun. (It does actually feel a bit milder today, though still fairly cold). Fancy getting up the hill in a Subaru car? Today and tomorrow there is the "Subaru Gelende Taxi" service happening here in Naeba, from 2pm. Interesting! You won't be able to miss it on the lower base area of the resort and if you can get in there it's free. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have measured 6cm to be added to my reports. There's not much of a wind, earlier light snow has eased off, there is some blue sky to be seen between the clouds. And visibility is pretty good. Oh yes, it's not quite as cold as it has been over the last week or so. Everywhere should be open as planned this morning. The forecasts are showing less snow on the horizon over the coming week along with some upcoming milder conditions. Perhaps that is inevitable as we are closer to the end of February than the beginning but... I will resist! (Yeah, I know, that doesn't mean much. Just want to point out that I'm not yet ready to think about potential early signs of spring. See my report archives to see how much snow we usually get in late February and March). Moiwa800m: -6.5℃, NW4.5m/s, development of cornices/snowdrifts have settled. Annupuri1120m: 250cm snow depth, 1100, -8.9℃, calm, 15cm snowfall. Hirafu peak: calm, -12℃. Mizuno no sawa: -7.85℃, 4cm snowfall in 24h, 177cm snow depth, NW6.4-9.6m/s. Weather Station Suttsu: -0.9℃, NNW5.2-9.1m/s, Kutchan: -6℃, S0.9m/s, 188cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NNE9m/s, Kamui cape: NNW6m/s, 1008hPa, 1.2m waves. Calm morning as a small low-pressure center is sitting right above the area. The cronices/snowdrifts development has settled and the general avalanche risk is low. Foggy conditions above 1000m elevation. All gates are scheduled to open. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates. The wind is forecasted to pick up as the low-pressure moves east. Beware of sudden weather changes. Avalanche forecast in Niseko emphasizes on the developments of wind-slabs. Drastically developing slabs (snowdrifts) are very unstable and easily triggers a surface slab slide with riding stimulations or falling cornices. Although cornices might look stable, they can collapse anytime and potentially initiate a slide depending on the slope stability underneath it. Cornice drops aren't a good idea. The snow is still good today. Stay away from valley bottoms and do not traverse across knolls and slopes under cornices. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is another very pleasant morning in the resort with a nice clear view of the ski hill looking back from Furano city. At -10c now, it is a milder morning, and the high should shoot up to around -4c by early afternoon. Overnight there has been a top up of 4cm of fresh snow at base level and this will probably equate to about 10cm at the top of the resort. There is only the slightest breeze and the sun is starting to hit the slopes. There's cloud around at the start of the day but there's sun shining down on the upper slopes as well. It is very cold again. I reckon it's going to be a fine day and expect some sun and blue skies. About 10cm of fresh snow to report since yesterday morning, most of that during the day yesterday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It got a bit windy yesterday in the afternoon but as far as I can tell lift operations were mostly unaffected (unconfirmed, but I don't suppose it matters now!). 8cm of snow to report this morning. It's fairly calm and while there is a lot of cloud around there is also some blue sky and sun (increasingly) shining through in places. It should be a good day and I expect everywhere to be open so I'll get this report up quickly. Clearer skies are still due early in the week along with milder conditions. Hopefully not too much. ---- Now that we are in the second half of February - ! - let's take a quick look back. I have recorded 175cm of snow over the first 14 reports of the month here at base, and the total for the season so far sits at 877cm. Add a chunk to that for what there'll be at higher elevations. The last day I wasn't able to report any new cm of snowfall was on 30th January, so including today we are now on a run of 16 days of recorded snowfall. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -6℃, 4cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -9.6℃, WSW6.4m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Snowdrift developments observed at Mikaeri junction. Annupuri 1120m snow depth 250cm. Hirafu peak: -12℃, NW15m/s, snowdrift developments, W5-8m/s at 1000m. Mizuno no sawa: -10.93℃, W4.9-8.3m/s, 170cm snow depth at base. Suttsu weather station: -2.2℃, 59cm snow depth, NW14m/s at midnight. Kutchan town: -8.4℃, 192cm snow depth. Benkei cape lighthouse: NW13m/s, Kamui cape: WSW10m/s, 1022hPa, 1.8m waves. Yesterday afternoon’s storm made cornices and snowdrifts develop drastically in slopes above 800m elevation. The storm settled down in the morning. The newly formed snowdrifts are stabilizing and the general avalanche risk is lowering. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The weather in Niseko is highly influenced by the climate of the Sea of Japan. The snow stabilizes quickly after the wind calms down and distinguished hoar/facet weak layers are less likely to form due to small temperature changes throughout the winter. However everybody shouldn’t forget that Niseko was once the place to experience the most avalanche accidents in Japan. The Niseko Rules and this avalanche information started as a necessity from those bitter experiences and not for tourism promotion. Overconfidence and preconceptions are the main causes of accidents. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto Kogen. Ah yes, more snow. 26cm since the report yesterday morning in total. And really good quality snow too. It was snowing during the day yesterday, just cloudy in the evening. Bit of a late start for the quad lift as they coped with all the snow and there was a bit of course closing (A6) for a bit due to poor visibility. This morning it's cloudy and a bit windy. Bit of blue sky peeking through at times and maybe that will increase during the day. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Chocolate fondue! Yes, that's why people are flocking to Nozawa today. At 10:30am on the Hikage area the ski resort will be handing out some free chocolate fondue, whatever that actually is. Sounds good though. And even ladies can have some, it's not just for the blokes. (See: Japan Valentines Day tradition). And I would guess that our favourite skiing Nozawa mascot, who just so happens to be a friendly and bright green vegetable, will also be making an appearance. Though that bit is unconfirmed. Limited amount of chocolate fondue, so don't tell everyone... Oh, you want some snow news too?! About 10cm overnight and more during the day yesterday, so a nice fresh layer. It is keeping cold and it is keeping snowing but I wouldn't expect much out of today and there might be some clearer skies tomorrow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. Snow has been falling (and still is) but right now and there's actually quite a bit of blue sky appearing over Maruike. I wonder if that will remain, clear up, or just be a temporary lull. I get the feeling it might clear a bit (total guess). Still, it is keeping very cold and there's another layer of fresh snow, and it's top quality light snow too. Excellent conditions. Good chance of some sun tomorrow and then the next snow on Saturday. Early week looks like sun and milder conditions are likely. Some ski areas will be handing out some chocolate this morning. Valentines Day, you see.
