- Madarao Now: Thursday 14th November 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Weather overview - Wind - Temperature - Visibility - Posted on Thursday 14th November 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Hello! So how have you been? We have enjoyed/endured a bunch of different weather since my last communication in spring. The biggest weather event in the northern Nagano region was that scary typhoon last month. Lower down in the valley nearby, there was some serious flooding going on - it made national and international news. Higher up here in the mountains there has been some damage along the road that connects Madarao with Tangram Ski Circus (and further afield to Myoko). Right now you need to go round the mountain on the road to the south (96). The good news is that they plan to have the road between Madarao and Tangram once again accessible in time for the winter season... Madarao plans to open for the season on Saturday 14th December 2019. The connecting Tangram Ski Circus plans to open on Saturday 21st 2019. So that means are a full one month away - it might seem a long time, but it will surely go quickly. Right now there is no snow to be seen but hopefully by the time the planned opening dates come around we will have had a number of snowfalls, a decent base and enough for a very good start to the season. Fingers crossed. I will be back over the coming weeks with news as the season approaches. See you soon! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Tuesday 12th November 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A bit of snow way up high! I always hesitate to write this, because people will think that the ski season is right around the corner, when in fact the corner is still pretty far away. I even was contacted almost a month ago by some people wanting to get up for a ski in the hills, complaining that it was raining in Aomori and how was the snow here? Think Christmas, folks, for hopefully enough snow to make the ski areas fun. Offpiste? Maybe early January if you're lucky. I only say that because the hotels, especially our newer members, won't (I doubt some of them know when the first snow falls!). But for the rest of you experienced, knowledgeable SnowJapan travelers, here's the positive report: snow up high! White on the couloirs of Mt. Myoko! Not enough to ski, but always nice to see the first welcoming signs for the coming season. And hope to see you on the hill shortly! - Nozawa Now: Friday 8th November 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Friday 8th November 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Greetings, Nozawa fans! It's November and so it is time to start getting really excited about the upcoming winter season (if you weren't already!).... especially as there is a definite frosted look to some of the trees up on the top of the mountain today (see below). Down here towards the village area we are still enjoying lovely autumn foliage. You might have heard about that nasty typhoon last month that created some real problems in many areas of Japan. There was some serious flooding fairly close by as well, with parts of northern Nagano making the news. We wish everyone affected all the very best as they pick up the pieces and try to get back to normal. Back here in Nozawa and the ski resort is busily preparing to open on Saturday 23rd November. If you look back at our archive reports (links below), you'll see how the early season has shaped up in previous years. Usually it's just the top area that opens up first. Let's see how this year goes. Fingers crossed we'll get lots of snow early on enabling the resort to open up on time and fully open as quickly as possible. As always, marketing/promotion talk and cheesy stuff is strictly not allowed here - you'll only hear about what I see and experience, whether it's good or bad. Hopefully good! - Myoko Now: Monday 6th May 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1705cm Posted on Monday 6th May 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The last day of season 2018-2019; it's really getting green at base level, but there's enough snow for a fun last day on the slopes (and of the long Golden Week as well). No reason to head back to the big city just yet; avoid the traffic jams by skiing the day away! Maybe get out early, though, as the weather looks like it might go rainy later in the day. Pretty good snow year this year. As I wrote in one of my mid-season reports, enough snow to shock some of our new, foreign hotel owners ("It's a weird snow year, isn't it?" No; no, it's not; last season, when you were looking for property, it was a low snow year). Snow dominates winter so much here; people buying resort homes and not planning for what to do when they're not around are going to pay for it in damaged roofs and broken windows. It happened to a lot of Japanese in the bubble years (look at all the destroyed old cabins out in the woods) and I think it's going to happen again in this boom. OK, enough of a rant there, but I think regular visitors know what I'm talking about. And now, with the huge crowds of January and February gone, we're back to the quiet and beauty of the mountains. All those new shoots softening the scenery; the walls of snow it seems like will never disappear now gone except for pockets of snow in the shade. Soon there will be tons more people up on the peak of Mt. Myoko every day than ever get there in the winter, but you barely notice them as they wind up the trails to the summit. Of course, it's pretty much a jungle off the trails, so you really can't see them anyway. And to give the entire ski perspective, the season is not completely over; hike up to Mt. Hiuchi and you'll be able to ski right through this month, for sure. Nice views up there, too (no lifts, though). Your reporter is heading off to a corner of the Northern Alps this weekend, in fact, to get one last set of big turns in... Looking forward to reporting for you again next season! The snow depth pole is standing out in the yard, ready to let us know total depth; the white snow boards we poke every morning are getting a fresh coat of paint and a well-earned rest in a cool, dark part of the office. Maybe even add some new exterior temperature/humidity sensors... See you in November for a pre-season warmup report! - Hakuba Now: Monday 6th May 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 420cm Posted on Monday 6th May 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Today is the last day of the 2018/2019 season for the four ski resorts that remain part open this morning. The upper areas of Hakuba Happo-one, Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike Kogen remain open today. Hakuba 47 was very close to being able to keep the 'ski to base' course open until the end of the season, but unfortunately has just about missed being able to do that - you need to take the Gondola back down to base today. It might not have been a classic season in terms of total snowfall but the snow has lasted well into late spring - impressively so, actually. If you compare the photos from this time last year you can clearly see that there's more snow remaining. So from tomorrow the ski lifts will be taking a well-earned rest. I had another great season and once again was able to spend more time on the slopes than the previous season - living here I am lucky to be able to time my adventures based on snow and weather conditions. Obviously not everyone has the luxury to time their holiday. Once again I was able to chat with lots of people on the lifts and elsewhere – pretty much everyone seemed to be loving their time in Hakuba. If you visited this season I hope you enjoyed good conditions and felt that you timed it well. I have been posting a report every day since November and so I feel that I can’t really add much to what I have already written - the story of the season is already out there. (And I'm all out of words!) Please do check out all the archive reports to get a day-by-day account of the ups and downs of the season. If you look on the Snowfall Analysis page, you will also be able to compare recent seasons too. I highly recommend that you spend some time reading through the reports to get ‘the full picture’ rather than picking on some isolated numbers. Regarding my observed snowfall numbers, I do not want to re-write what I posted last year. So please just take a look here. And see the message below. Bottom line: please read the reports and don't mis-interpret them! As always, I/we will be looking into ways of trying to further improve our service for next season. Hakuba is of course a very popular place to be over the summer months. There's a lot of beautiful nature to enjoy and adventures to be had here. So perhaps some of you will be here before the next snow starts falling in the autumn. (The weekly weather forecast data on the ski resort pages within SnowJapan - see links in the right column - is updated throughout the year so if you are visiting Hakuba keep your eyes on those pages). And talking of the next snowfall, the Hakuba Now reports will be back with you from November 2019 to cover the 2019-2020 season. So thanks for reading and see you in November! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Lots of cloud around this morning and some rain. Fingers crossed the rain might clear later on but it might be back tomorrow - as might snow. Whether that will just be 'up top' or lower down, we shall just have to wait and see what happens. As they say. Whatever, it's going to be a cold start to the weekend so don't come expecting warm and sunny typical Golden Week weather. Not just yet anyway, we might get some of that next week.
