The last day of season 2018-2019; it's really getting green at base level, but there's enough snow for a fun last day on the slopes (and of the long Golden Week as well). No reason to head back to the big city just yet; avoid the traffic jams by skiing the day away! Maybe get out early, though, as the weather looks like it might go rainy later in the day. Pretty good snow year this year. As I wrote in one of my mid-season reports, enough snow to shock some of our new, foreign hotel owners ("It's a weird snow year, isn't it?" No; no, it's not; last season, when you were looking for property, it was a low snow year). Snow dominates winter so much here; people buying resort homes and not planning for what to do when they're not around are going to pay for it in damaged roofs and broken windows. It happened to a lot of Japanese in the bubble years (look at all the destroyed old cabins out in the woods) and I think it's going to happen again in this boom. OK, enough of a rant there, but I think regular visitors know what I'm talking about. And now, with the huge crowds of January and February gone, we're back to the quiet and beauty of the mountains. All those new shoots softening the scenery; the walls of snow it seems like will never disappear now gone except for pockets of snow in the shade. Soon there will be tons more people up on the peak of Mt. Myoko every day than ever get there in the winter, but you barely notice them as they wind up the trails to the summit. Of course, it's pretty much a jungle off the trails, so you really can't see them anyway. And to give the entire ski perspective, the season is not completely over; hike up to Mt. Hiuchi and you'll be able to ski right through this month, for sure. Nice views up there, too (no lifts, though). Your reporter is heading off to a corner of the Northern Alps this weekend, in fact, to get one last set of big turns in... Looking forward to reporting for you again next season! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Today is the last day of the 2018/2019 season for the four ski resorts that remain part open this morning. The upper areas of Hakuba Happo-one, Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike Kogen remain open today. Hakuba 47 was very close to being able to keep the 'ski to base' course open until the end of the season, but unfortunately has just about missed being able to do that - you need to take the Gondola back down to base today. It might not have been a classic season in terms of total snowfall but the snow has lasted well into late spring - impressively so, actually. If you compare the photos from this time last year you can clearly see that there's more snow remaining. So from tomorrow the ski lifts will be taking a well-earned rest. I had another great season and once again was able to spend more time on the slopes than the previous season - living here I am lucky to be able to time my adventures based on snow and weather conditions. Obviously not everyone has the luxury to time their holiday. Once again I was able to chat with lots of people on the lifts and elsewhere – pretty much everyone seemed to be loving their time in Hakuba. If you visited this season I hope you enjoyed good conditions and felt that you timed it well. I have been posting a report every day since November and so I feel that I can’t really add much to what I have already written - the story of the season is already out there. (And I'm all out of words!) Please do check out all the archive reports to get a day-by-day account of the ups and downs of the season. If you look on the Snowfall Analysis page, you will also be able to compare recent seasons too. I highly recommend that you spend some time reading through the reports to get ‘the full picture’ rather than picking on some isolated numbers. Regarding my observed snowfall numbers, I do not want to re-write what I posted last year. So please just take a look here. And see the message below. Bottom line: please read the reports and don't mis-interpret them! As always, I/we will be looking into ways of trying to further improve our service for next season. Hakuba is of course a very popular place to be over the summer months. There's a lot of beautiful nature to enjoy and adventures to be had here. So perhaps some of you will be here before the next snow starts falling in the autumn. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. Today is the last day of the ski season here in Zao. The resort has just about managed to keep the Chuo area open until today. Otsukaresama deshita. The Ropeways here in Zao operate throughout the year for sightseeing, apart from some periods when they are closed for maintenance as noted below: * Zao Ropeway - closed from 7th May until 23rd May * Zao Chuo Ropeway - closed for maintenance from 7th May until 24th May * Zao Sky Cable - closed for maintenance from 25th May until 7th August Anyway, I hope you enjoyed Zao if you visited during the 2018-2019 ski season. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. After a warm and sunny day yesterday today won't be quite as warm and we are still expecting some rain later on, though we start the day with some sunshine and some blue sky. On this last day of the season the upper areas of Nozawa remain open. If you compare the webcam images from this time last year you can clearly see that there's more snow still left now than there was last year. This is the Nozawa Now report of the season. It's pretty cold, certainly not what we expect over Golden Week. The Chuo Number 2 lift is opening up for the start of the Golden Week period. Sunny skies are forecast from tomorrow for a few days. The Zao Echo Line road is now open! Fingers crossed the rain might clear later on but it might be back tomorrow - as might snow. Whether that will just be 'up top' or lower down, we shall just have to wait and see what happens. As they say. Whatever, it's going to be a cold start to the weekend so don't come expecting warm and sunny typical Golden Week weather. Not just yet anyway, we might get some of that next week. After a sunny and very spring like warm day yesterday, it seems we got some rain overnight/very early morning but it is now just mostly cloudy. And some angry looking clouds too, making some areas look rather dark and dull this morning. But they're due to get less scary looking as the day goes on and in fact the sun is already trying to break through some of the clouds. It is noticeably not as warm this morning. Come tomorrow we will be back to clearer skies and sunshine. It looks like the top lifts at Happo-one are on hold at the start of the day and the official Tsugaike Kogen site doesn't show any lifts moving. No other info available as I put this report together. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Some cloud around yesterday but largely blue skies until mid afternoon and a nice spring day. Some dark moody looking clouds... and some sunshine peeking through at times too this morning. Perhaps we will see more of the sun; that's what the forecast seems to predict. It's not as warm this morning and tomorrow will be similar. Temperatures look set to rise once again from around Sunday, though nothing too dramatic for the moment. So we now have three weekends left for ski lift operations here in Niseko. The mega 10 day 'Golden Week' holiday period this year starts on Saturday 27th (with 29th being the first weekday holiday of course). Resort operations remain unchanged for the moment and while there is a bit of wind this morning lifts appear to be opening as planned. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. A bit more snow being reported by Kumanoyu (5cm) since yesterday but mostly it is just cloudy this morning. It was cold overnight and roads coming up to the area are icy. Conditions are really rather good especially when you consider the date. It should be a good weekend and I would expect quite a few people to be turning up to take advantage. As you would! Fine sunny weather is forecast for tomorrow with perhaps some rain/snow later in the day on Sunday. It does look like after that we can expect temperatures to start rising a bit - full on spring just around the corner perhaps? The section of Route 292 that connects the Yokoteyama area of Shiga Kogen with Kusatsu in Gunma Prefecture (the Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route) will be opening from 10:00am on Friday 19th April. That section of road is closed during the winter. It opening means that you will be able to get to Shiga Kogen from the south (Kusatsu) as well as from the north-west.
